Chapter 12
Geet didn't speak to anyone as they returned, she headed straight to her room, he was so close she thought to herself. Nikita's advice rung in her ears : Speak to him, just once. She couldn't bring herself to face him today how would she ever gather the courage to say something to him? She looked at his bed that remained in its place, unslept in and untouched for 6 months.
"Mama" Geet hugged her mother from behind. "What's marriage?" she questioned, she was only 16yrs old, her friend's sister was getting married, she knew the custom but what did it actually mean?
"Shadi hai Geet" Rano chuckled shaking her head.
"Nahi mama" she whined. "Mujhe school ke liye ek topic ke baare mein likna hai" she lied. "Ab aap bataiye" she looked at her mother's reflection in the mirror.
"Ek Ashirwaat hai" her mother replied. "A blessing from God! Where someone would be there when no one is around to hold you, when someone hugs you when you need comforting" she muttered. "Someone you would share your life with" she turned to Geet. "Someone who's going to love you more than anyone else ever could. He's going to be by your side all the time, even if he's not there you'll know his presence because he's made a place in your heart" she whispered softly recalling her own marriage, her voice grew thick and tears blurred her sight. "He's going to be your protector from every evil eye. You'll be his queen, you're the only one for him" she paused wiping her eyes. Geet knelt down placing her head on Rano's lap.
"Is papa still with you?" she asked innocently.
"Hmm" she hummed in responding nodding. He was there, supporting her, guiding her through this empty life despite not being here in flesh.
Geet sat down on his bed, her hand touched his blanket gently stroking.
Will he ever become her life partner? Will he ever protect her, love her? Hold her hand when she needs him? Will he by her side? Will she ever experience this blessing?
You don't get anything if you don't try. She recalled Nikita's words. Can she try with him?
Especially when he hates her? But why does he hate her so much? What had she done? She questioned herself.
Dadima listened to Vikrant as he explained everything, she wanted to smile that Maan had said to book an appointment but she knew him a little too much. He had something in his mind and she had to find out before sending Geet to work there. She couldn't convince Geet tonight, she was surely in shock and probably has made her mind up.
Dadima's trance was broken when her phone rang, responding she heard from an old friend who was coming into town with her granddaughter in law, Dadima invited them over to stay and they reminded each other of Karwa chaut which was coming up.
Just then an idea clicked to Dadima, she cut the call hurriedly on the pretence of having some work, she called Nakul to get her a pen and paper quickly.
Geet came down an hour later once she'd calmed herself down, she found Dadima ordering things over the phone and her brows drew together in confusion seeing notes jotted down.
"Ah Geet aap aagaye" Dadima smiled placing the phone down ticking something off then looked at Geet.
"Dadima yeh sab..." she looked at the coffee table then back at Dadima.
"Yeh sab karwa chaut ke tayyari ke liye hai" she smiled widely. "Ghar main aap lougon ke shadi ke liye kuch nahi kar payi isi liye hum karwa chaut yahan karna chahte hai, humare kuch rishtedaar aayenge" she explained informing Geet of Karwa chaut and the rituals. Geet listened carefully but she wondered how will Maan be reacting? He'd obviously blow a fuse once he hears karwa chaut will be kept here.
It was late into the evening, Geet noted the time and knew Maan would be home soon, she also recalled Nakul not feeling too well so Dadima had sent him to rest. She pondered over who'd give him something to eat, just then she was called by Dadima. She climbed out of her bed and walked to Dadima's room.
"Aap ne bulaya?"
"Haan bete, Vikrant ko zara kehdo ke Maan ke liye khana garam kar de" she told her. "Main kar deti lekin utne ka mann nahi kar raha" she replied.
"Ji Dadima, aap sojaye" she replied, she walked down and knocked on Vikrant's door, getting no response she peeped inside and found the lights switched off and guessed Vikrant had slept early as they do have college tomorrow. Now Geet was in a dilemma, she couldn't go back and tell Dadima because she knew Dadima would head down rather than asking her. Geet glanced at her watch, she had 15 minutes before he arrives so she could heat his food and rush back upstairs.
Geet walked down in her usual nightwear which was her kurta and pyjamas, she switched the kitchen lights on and started heating up food.
Maan climbed of the car and headed inside, he was tired and frustrated, he hadn't ever made so many mistakes in his life like he'd done today. It was all Geet's fault. Had she not come to the office then this wouldn't have happened. He was about to head up when he noticed the lights switched on, he wondered who'd be awake now, he halted in the dining room seeing Geet placing down dishes, she hadn't even realized he'd come since he was still standing in the dark hall, only the kitchen lights were switched on which brightened the dining room as well.
Geet brought out a plate and a glass of water, placing it down she turned to leave and stilled seeing Maan standing in the darkness. Her lips trembled, he looked angry and downright scary now. She dipped her head swallowing hard, Maan didn't respond but continued to look at her, he waited for her to say something but all she did was look down. He glanced down wondering what the hell seemed so interesting on the floor that she liked to stare at that.
Dr Nikita's words rung in her ears reminding her before her next lesson she should've said something to him, even it was a hello.
"A...Aa.. aapka khana" she stuttered almost feeling faint, she was sure the blood from her face must've drained, suddenly she felt cold. She looked at him, he didn't say a word but continued to stare, she didn't wait but rushed past him running up the stairs, her heart was beating against her chest violently. She closed the door leaning against it, her palms had grown hot due to fear, her fingers were still shaking, her breaths were heavy as well.
Maan had looked over his shoulder and noted her running like as if she couldn't get away fast enough, he looked at the food she'd laid out. No one stayed up till 11 in the night for him or even warmed food like this, Nakul had done it out of duty, Dadima out of love but Geet? What did she do it for? There was nothing in it for her? Something wasn't right! This didn't add up. Geet's behaviour didn't add up, one minute she seems normal, smiling away with Dadima, laughing and joking with Vikrant then why did she turn into something else in front of him? He turned and walked upstairs not feeling hungry, he quickly changed and headed downstairs, a cold swim sound like a good idea right now.
Geet was staring out the window, the full moon out and shining brightly, stars twinkling, a day tomorrow she'd be looking at this moon and breaking her fast but how? Will he even come home early? She questioned herself. She was going to be observing the fast but for who? Maan wasn't her husband in any way other than walking around the fire what else said they were husband and wife? They didn't even communicate, how could this be a marriage? She questioned.
Her attention was drawn away when she heard a splash, she walked away from the window sliding the balcony doors open and stepped out wondering who was in the pool. She couldn't see his face well but when the moon shone on him she knew it was Maan, she stepped back into her room quickly sliding the doors closed, he'd probably accuse her of something if he saw her out there. She'd run away as soon as she could from downstairs, he probably would've thought she'd put poison in or something. She looked at his empty bed, her heart feeling heavy and empty at the same time. She shook her thoughts away and climbed into her bed pulling the covers over herself.
"Vikrant mujhe kahan lekar jaa rahe ho?" Geet questioned as he drove down a different route than the one they usually take.
"Dadima's orders" he replied.
"Par batao toh sahi" she responded.
"Sorry no can do" he shook his head.
"Vikrant" she crossed her arms, he only laughed shaking his head at her.
"Bhabhi no point in trying to get angry at me, you know I don't give in easily" he responded.
She huffed and looked out the window hoping to know where he was taking her, she frowned in confusion as he came to a stop at the city centre mall, she was even more surprised seeing Amelia and Meera stood there by their car.
"Go on, you're with them and call me when I have to pick you up" Vikrant opened the door for her, she nodded though still confused, Meera and Amelia joined her whilst Vikrant drew away.
"Hey you finally made it" Meera spoke tugging her hand walking towards the mall entrance.
"Um... Why have you got me here for?" she questioned.
"Tomorrow is Karwa Chaut, Dadima called and told us to take you when we come here"
She nodded. "But what are we doing here?" she questioned.
"Well shopping first of all, we have to pick out sarees, oh and you need to get something with like heavy work on"
"Why? I don't want to get a saree, aur.. I haven't got any money on me" she responded.
"Oh don't worry about money, Dadima's booked an appointment for us, it's just going to be us, our dad's paying for us, Dadima's paying your expenses, she's the one who suggested this".
Geet nodded, she knew Dadima was quite excited, seeing the things she was doing for her first karwa chaut made her more guilty, she hated to see how Dadima kept hoping for something, she wished she could do something but there wasn't anything she could really do. Her husband cannot stand the sight of her and she was too afraid to try.
Dadima looked at Maan's door for a moment, she silent shot a quick prayer and opened the door, she found him sat on his desk typing away on his laptop.
"Dadima" Maan frowned wondering what she was doing here in the office.
She closed the door behind her, walking over she settled on the chair opposite his desk.
"Aap yahan?" he questioned.
"Kal karwa chaut hai" she started, he immediately rolled his eyes and turned his attention back to his laptop.
"Maan" she called scowling as he'd immediately turned away.
"What is it Dadima?" he sighed heavily.
"Geet ka pehla karwa chaut hai"
"So? Tell her not to keep it" he shrugged.
"Do you know how much this means to a married woman?" she questioned.
"Let me remind you something" he leaned forward resting his elbows on the desk. "Gayatri Khurana kept this fast every year, and what did she do? Hmm?" he questioned.
"This isn't about Gayatri" she clipped out. "This is about Geet. Your wife Geet"
"First off stop calling her my wife" he held his hand up stopping her.
"You refusing to acknowledge her doesn't change she is your wife" she replied tightly. "I want you home tomorrow Maan"
"Yeah like as if I'm going to stay home" he scoffed.
"My darling grandson, I'm not requesting you, I'm telling you. If I don't see you tomorrow at home then I'll be moving out with Vikrant" she threatened.
"Dadima!" he hissed.
"You heard me. When I try nicely, you ruin it" she stood to her feet. "So it's your own fault. Tomorrow be there" she glared at him and turned walking away.
If only he didn't love this woman he would've ignored every single stubborn orders of hers but he loved the woman and hurting her would hurt him only. He decided to finish as much as possible as Dadima had already said he can't be coming to work tomorrow.
"No this is too expensive" Geet shook her head refusing what Meera had chosen.
"Oh my days" Amelia held her head. "She's going to refuse whatever we get"
"I know Geet, stop doing that" Meera agreed. "Just enjoy today"
"I'm bored" she responded. What was exactly fun about shopping? She'd come a few times and did enjoy looking around and liked the different things but when it came to buying she didn't enjoy it so much. "Let's go to the park" she suggested.
"Park ki bacchi. We've been there just 2 days back" Meera reminded.
Geet shrugged pouting. "Still..." Since Dadima had shown her the park she'd loved it, she often came down with her friends, Vikrant and Dadima join her during the weekends as well.
"Right if you're not choosing, we're going to choose for you" Meera told her.
She shrugged and looked around the store, she walked away leaving them to choose, whilst Amelia and Meera stared at her shaking their heads.
Geet smiled seeing the toys shop opposite, she looked behind and saw Meera and Amelia engrossed in their shopping and she headed over to the toy shop.
She smiled feeling overwhelmed with the amount of soft toys, she caressed the soft fur grinning widely, she'd always wanted toys, she had a small teddy back home but wasn't able to play with it after the age of 11, her Daarji had burned it in front of her whilst he lectured her on growing up. She'd passed by this shop many times with Dadima, Vikrant and even her friends but didn't have the courage to go inside in case they laugh and mock her.
"Would you like any help ma'am?" She turned to see a saleswoman smiling at her.
"No thank you" she shook her head. "I'm only looking"
The woman smiled and left her to it, Geet looked around one last time and walked away to join her friends who were now paying for their purchases.
"This is yours, don't get it out now" Meera passed her the bag warning her.
"Why? I want to see it"
"Not now because you're going to start complaining about this as well"
"I don't complain" Geet replied.
"Baby you've done nothing but complain" Amelia laughed pinching her cheek.
Geet pushed her hand away frowning. "I didn't"
"Alright alright kids, lets go, we'll fight later" Meera waved over at them as she headed towards the escalators.
"Hello" Maan responded picking up his phone.
"Maan its me bete"
"Now what does the highness want?" he questioned.
"Well another order for you darling. Pick Geet up from the mall and get her a present for tomorrow"
"Dream on Dadima" he replied. "I'm staying tomorrow as you wished but if you think I'm going to pick that disaster you're wrong" he replied tightly. "Completely wrong"
