CHAPTER 14. FEELINGS!
"Toh bataayiye! Bade Thakur ki haveli dekh aaye? How was it?, Geet asked as she served Maan. It was dinner time already. Maan had come home an hour before. Geet wanted to ask him about his trip right away but his phone had rang. It was from his office. They had informed him that some problem had come up at his Office. He had spent the next hour holed up in his room, instructing his employees and solving the problem. By the time he had come down, it was time to have dinner.
Maan nodded, "It was interesting. I met Mr. Kohli. Bade interesting the woh bhi!
Geet's eyes widened as she sat to eat, "Aap Bade Thakur se mile? Her voice was filled with wonder.
Maan frowned. What was so special about this Thakur that Geet looked so delighted?
"Tum itni shock mein kyun ho? What so special... aisa khaas kya hai Mr. Kohli mein?, Maan questioned in a halting manner as he tried to speak in Hindi as much as possible. Despite how much adorable Geet's Ki' was, he was not interested in wasting time translating things for her. After all, he could speak proper Hindi with some effort. Wait! Since when did I find Geet's confusion filled expression adorable? Maan was shocked by his own thought process. He mentally shook his head to banish that thought. Maan! You are going mad!
Geet explained, "Arre! Bade Thakur toh is gaao ke karta dharta hai! Jab joona gaao tabah hua tha na, toh woh Bade Thakur ka parivar tha jinhone naya gaao banaane ke liye paise diye! Yahaan school banwaaya! College khade kiye! Yahaan ke Bhagwan hai woh! Log unhein poojte hain!
Maan wanted to ask. Then why was he allowing the Mall to be built here when it was obvious that lives will be ruined because of that?
But Geet continued to speak and managed to answer his question too, "Lekin yeh sab karte karte unki saari daulat chali gayi! Jab tak akaal aaya, tab tak woh gaao waalon ki koi madat nahi kar paaye! Unke khet se jo paise aate hain woh unke ghar sambhaalne mein hi chale jaate hain! Unhonein toh unke khaandaani Mahal ko bhi bechne ki koshish ki, hum sabke liye paise jutaane ke liye, lekin kuch jaanj padtal... Matlab research... ke baad pata chala ki Haveli bik nahi sakti! Unke khaandaan mein hi rahegi! Toh bas tab se unhonein paise jamaa karne ke liye chanda maangna shuru kar diya! Badi badi partiyaan dete aur jab log aate toh unhein iss gaao ki kahaani bataake gaao ko sudhaarne ke liye paise jamaa karte! Usi ek party mein woh Maal (Mall) waala aaya tha. Bade Thakur ne badi koshish ki hum sabki zameen khareedke yeh kaam rokne ki, par kuch na hua!
Geet looked sad at the end of the narration and Maan's heart went for her as he remembered that it is her house on which the Mall might be built. Then Geet perked up, "Arre! Bade Thakur hi toh hain, jinhonein mennu School mein kaam dilaaya! Geet went back to eating and Maan went back too.
Once the dinner was done, Maan sat on the stairs working on something on his Laptop. Geet was in the kitchen. She wanted to cook something elaborate for breakfast the next day so was cutting the vegetables beforehand while sitting on the floor. As she sat there cutting, Geet frowned, "Waise Maan..., she called out to him and Maan turned around to look at her.
"Aapko aur koi jagah yahaan dekhni hai? Kal hum chal sakte hain! Mere Bank ka kaam aaj hogaya!, Geet informed him.
Maan thought for a while as he tried to think if there was any other place he wanted to see. As nothing came to mind, a pang went through his heart. If there was nothing else to see here, he would have to move on, check other nearby Villages for some clue about his past. This also inadvertently meant he would have to leave Geet. He took in a sharp breath at that thought. Without realising he sent a prayer to Babaji that there would be something around this Village that he had yet to see. At that moment, as if it was the answer to his problem, the ruins flashed through his mind.
"The ruins!, Maan almost shouted in excitement.
"Ki?, Geet answered in confusion.
Maan sent her a glance and absentmindedly noted that yes, confused Geet did look adorable. Then he set about to explain what ruins meant in Hindi.
"Ruins! My Daadaji! Unhonein Ruins ke baare mein bataaya tha! Ruins matlab old places. Matlab... Ab yeh kaise samjhaaun?, Maan resisted the urge to scratch his head.
"Achcha! Imagine!, Maan ordered and then looked at Geet keenly, "Imagine ka matlab pata hai na?
Geet huffed, "Haan! Haan! Pata hai! Itni bhi bewakoof nahi hun!
Maan resisted the urge to ask, does that mean she acknowledged that she was atleast a little bit foolish? Focus! Maan! Focus! You can tease her some other day!
"So Imagine! Ek zamaane mein ek badi Haveli hai!
"Bade Thakur ki Haveli jaisi?, Geet interrupted, looking a little excited.
Maan thought for a second and then nodded, "Haan! Waisi! Lekin kai decades... Centuries... sadiyaan pehle!
Geet nodded in understanding.
Maan sighed. Thank God! I remembered ages ago' is Sadiyaan' in Hindi! Now if only I could remember what ruins was in Hindi! I can save myself from rambling like an idiot!
Maan continued, "Ab sadiyon puraani cheez iss zamaane kaise hogi? Tooti phooti... Without color... all around jhaad aur patte honge... do you get it?
Geet nodded.
"Ab aisi jagah ko kya bologi?, Maan questioned.
Geet frowned, "Tooti phooti... jaise woh ghar puraane gaao mein jahaan aap gaye the?
Maan nodded.
"Khandahar jaisi..., Geet mused.
"Exactly!, Maan called out. Khandahar! That was the word I was looking for!
"Khandahar! That's what I was trying to say! Yahaan kahin aas paas koi khandahar hai kya? Ekdum viraan jagah pe..., Maan explained and looked at Geet expectantly.
Geet shrugged as she pondered, "Waise yahaan aaju baaju toh Kaali Ma ka puraana mandir hi hai jo Khandahar jaisa lagta hai!
Maan sighed as he deflated. That meant he had to pack his bags and get moving. Because the temple was not the place he saw in his dreams. It was way too broken and yet there was an area which had caved in making it look like a cave where Mohi and Mahi used to meet.
Geet took in Maan's expression and felt bad. Oh Geet! Soch! Aur koi aisi jagah hai kya aaju baaju! Soch! She wanted to answer Maan's question positively and cheer him up again. She didn't want to see his face look so defeated. She continued to force herself to think and then an answer came to her.
"Ek jagah hai!, Geet blurted out, bringing Maan out of his thoughts.
He looked at her curiously and Geet explained, "Bandipur ka Khandahar! Kai sadiyon pehle Raj Gharaane ke chuttiyon ke ghar tha! Garmi ki chuttiyon mein aate the yahaan! Ab woh jagah ek dum viraan hai, tooti hui! Aaju baaju sirf Jungle!
Maan's eyes widened as his memories supplied him with the scenery of Jungle en route to the place.
"Haan! Wahi jagah hai!, Maan exclaimed.
"Arre! Wahaan toh main aapko ek dum aasaani se le jaa sakti hun! Bahut changi jagah hai ji! Bachpan mein hum sab poora parivar Picnic ke liye wahaan jaate the!, Geet was excited. She was going to one of her favourite places from her childhood. She ignored the fact that the reason behind her elation was because she was getting more time with Maan.
"So tomorrow you and I, hum yeh ruins dekhne jaayenge?, Maan asked in excitement. Geet nodded but then frowned, "Lekin aapke Jeep se nahi jaa paayenge!
"Oh!, Maan commented, a little surprised.
"Haan! Wahaan car ya bikes se pahunchna namumkin hai! Ek dum jungle ke beechon beech hai! Haan, Jeep se Bandipur gaao pahunch sakte hain! Lekin usmein saat ghanta lagega! Woh beech mein kuch pahaad haina! Toh gaadiyaan pahaad ko ghoomke jaati hain! Usse achcha toh train hai! Do ghante mein pahunch jaayenge! Kyunki rail gaddi pahaad ke andar se jaati hai!, Geet explained.
Maan nodded, "Toh train se chalenge!
Geet grinned, eager to travel by train, "Pehle yahaan se do ghante train se jaana hoga! Phir Bandipur ke station se jungle tak jaana hoga, jo sirf kuch minute ki doori pe hai! Aur ek aur ghanta chalke jaana hoga, Jungle ke andar! Jungle mein raasta bada mushkil hai! Pathreela bhi hai, sunsaan bhi hai, jaanvar bhi hain aur jhaad patti toh bhar bharke hai! Phir aayega aapka Khandahar!, Geet explained.
Maan shrugged, "No Problem! Mujhe Camping ka bahut shauk hai! Jungle se main nahi darta! Aur rahi baat chalne ki toh I don't mind walking! Tumhein koi problem hai?
Geet shook her head vigorously. Oh no! She had no problem! As long as Maan was around, she didn't care how long she had to walk! Geet shook her head at her wayward thoughts.
Maan continued speaking, "Toh ek kaam karte hain, kal naashta karte hain aur nikal padte hain! Lunch time tak Bandipur pahunchenge, right?
Geet nodded, "Hum log toh yahaan se das baje nikal jaate hain! Toh 1:30 Khandahar ke andar!
Maan nodded, "Theek hai! Kal chalte hain 10 AM! Lekin Lunch...
Geet cut him off, "Khaana ke liye, main dabba baandh lungi! Wahaan pahunchkar khaayenge!
Maan frowned, "Dabba baandh what?
Geet shook her head, "I take lunch in Tiffin, ok?
Maan resisted the urge to roll his eyes at her odd English.
He simply nodded, "Theek hai! Toh main mera Camping backpack ready karta hun! Ek din ke liye woh perfect rahega! Tumhaara dabba bhi tum usmein rakh dena! That we will have only one bag to carry!
Geet grinned in agreement.
Once the decision was done, Maan focused on his laptop and Geet tried to focus on her vegetables. But she could not. Even though she had tried a lot not to have feelings for Maan, somehow her heart kept on going towards him. Every time she pulled her thoughts away from him, it went back to him. Just like right now, her mind was showing her a sweet moment where Maan and Geet would sit together in the ruins, eating food with each other. Then while eating she would smear her cheek. And Maan would notice it and lovingly wipe her cheek. She shuddered at her thoughts. Chup kar bewakoof! Woh tera nahi hai, aur na kabhi hoga! Mat soch uske baare mein! Mat!
"OUCH!
Maan looked up at the shriek and his eyes widened. Geet's finger was bleeding. Maan sprang from the stairs, dropping his laptop on one of the steps and scrambled towards her.
"Geet!, he shouted worriedly as he grabbed her bleeding hand. The bleeding had yet to stop. By then Geet had stood up in alarm, so Maan dragged her with him to the sink and pushed her finger underneath the flowing water.
"What is this, Geet? Can't you be careful?, Maan snarled as he left her and ran upstairs. Geet looked on curiously while her heart beat faster. It was not the blood and the sudden cut that was making her heart race faster though. It was the concern she saw in Maan's eyes that had her taking deep breaths. Yeh kya kar diya aapne, Maan? Bahut mushkil se apne ehsaason ko aapse door kheech laayi thi! Aur aapne ek pal mein mujhe apne paas kheech liya! Yeh kya aapne kiya, Maan? Yeh kya kiya?
Just then Maan came back and in his hand was the first aid box. He opened it and started to take care of her wound. As he applied the medicines to the wound and bandaged it, he constantly kept scolding Geet, "... You have no eyes, Geet!... Are you so dumb?...What if something happened to you?... You are supposed to cut the vegetables, not the fingers!... Have you forgotten the different between carrot and finger?... And so on and on, continued Maan's scoldings as he concentrated on Geet's wound.
And while Maan scolded Geet, Geet was too lost in Maan to even hear a single word. A gentle smile on her face and her feelings reflecting in her eyes, she simply stared at him.
The wound was covered and Maan turned to look at Geet, "You ok? His tone was still gruff and he still looked worried but it was obvious, he had run out of steam and couldn't scold her anymore.
Geet looked away and nodded. Maan grabbed her hand, "Haath zara sambhalke!
Geet looked back at Maan as Maan turned to his first aid kit and started to arrange the things in the box properly to close it.
Geet took a few steps away and then almost ran out of the kitchen. She reached the stairs and looked at Maan with worried eyes. Words slipped out of her mouth in a soft voice,
"Chot haath par lagi thi
Dil par marham laga gaye
Ummeed bhi na thi pyaar ke do boond ki
Tum toh dariya hi la gaye.
DISCLAIMER: There is no Bandipur near Hoshiarpur. It is actually on Karnataka and Tamil Nadu border. And it's an animal sanctuary. But I couldn't think of any better name.
How was that? Hope you enjoyed.
Next up, its Jungle time.
Take care, have fun and take care,
Kalpana
