CHAPTER 6. MAANEET MEET!
Maan growled as the jeep jerked. And growled again when another jerk came. Damn! Damn this road and its potholes! Damn Dilli and its roads! Damn India and my past life! Can't I have been born in some other country? India hi mila tha! Damn! He slammed his hand at the wheel. He may have been cheerful at the start of the trip but twenty minutes later Maan was cursing every person who even hinted that he should visit India.
Maan was cursing the Pandit and the Hypnotist and even his own assistant who found the hypnotist for him when his eyes picked up a detail on the road. A woman was being harassed by a man! Maan stopped the jeep right away. He kept his eyes trained on the woman who on the second glance seemed to be arguing with the man. Suddenly the man raised his hand to slap her and Maan tensed. But before he could jump out of the jeep, the woman grabbed the man's hand and seemed to glare at him. Maan raised an eyebrow. The woman did not seem as helpless as he thought. But then the man wrenched his hand off and grabbed her by her hair and now Maan had enough. He never tolerated woman being treated like slaves and he refused to tolerate it now. That man maybe the woman's husband but no husband had the right to treat his wife like this.
Maan jumped down the jeep and ran to the quarreling couple. The man seemed to be shouting obscenities at the woman. Maan neared them and managed to hear some of his words. Ignoring the woman, Maan turned the man around and threw a punch at him. He took a step ahead and stood between the man and the woman with his back facing the woman, protecting her while he faced the abuser. When the man looked at him with wide eyes Maan roared, "How dare you! Apni wife pe haath uthaate hue sharam nahi aayi!"
"OJI!", the woman's voice came from behind, "Yeh toh mera husband nahi hai ji! Ae toh menu ched raha tha!"
"WHAT!", Maan roared with anger. In Maan's books, worst people than wife beaters were eve teasers and Maan refused to tolerate them. Maan swung another punch, this time aiming for the man's stomach. The man let out a shout and grabbing his stomach bent down in pain.
"Ladki ko chedta hai? Have you no shame?", Maan spat as he raised his hand and delivered a tight slap on the man's cheek. The man winced and started to take steps backwards. Realising that the man was escaping Maan glared at him.
The man started to run but before he escaped he delivered his last words, "Tujhe toh main dekh lunga kudiye!"
Before Maan could retort the woman shouted back in a loud voice, "Haan haan! Dekhlena!"
Maan winced at her loud voice and resisted the urge to cover his ears.
"Kutta! Kameena!", the woman ranted and Maan shook his head. Where am I stuck? He turned towards his jeep to walk off when the woman spoke.
"O ji! Tussi toh toap ho!", her words confused Maan. Toap? Whats that?
"What?", Maan murmured in his American accent.
"Vat! Ab ae ki hai?", the woman wondered.
Maan blinked in surprise. Doesn't she know English? Who is this woman?
Maan turned around and his eyes met her big brown eyes. For a second, the world stopped as Maan met Geet. And then the world started moving again.
"What?", Maan mumbled.
"Phirse vat! Ab bataa hi deejiye ki yeh vat kya hai!", the woman mumbled as she looked at him curiously. No! Not a woman! Maan realized. She was a young girl! Barely in her twenties, it seemed! Dressed in traditional blue salwar kameez, with dupatta on her head she looked every inch a villager! No wonder she did not understand me! Must be illiterate or must not be from English speaking school!
"Nothing! I mean kuch nahi!", Maan turned around to walk away.
"Suniye ji!", her voice chirped from behind, "Thank you hai ji! Tussi bade hi achche ladte ho ji! Kushtibaaz ho kya?"
"What?", Maan murmured again. What the hell was kushtibaaz?
"Phirse yeh vat!", the girl mumbled in confusion.
Maan shook his head. Maan beta! Move on before this girl drives you crazy!
The girl seemed to have wandered off judging by the retreating steps he could hear. Maan decided to walk away too when suddenly a thought entered his head. Wait a minute! What the hell is this girl doing late night in the middle of the road?
"Wait a minute!", Maan spoke as he turned around. The girl turned around too and Maan walked towards her, his brow furrowed in confusion.
"What are you doing late night here?", Maan asked.
"Kya? Kya kahaa?", the girl screwed up her face in confusion too, "Tussi ke bol rahe ho kuch samajh nahi aa raha!"
Maan huffed, "Main bol raha hun! Itni raat ko yahaan kya kar rahi ho?"
"Oh! Toh tussi yeh bol rahe the! O Ji! Ki bataaun tennu! Meri bus aane waali hai! Uske liye ruki hun!", she pointed towards the bus stop nearby and Maan's face showed comprehension.
But then he frowned again, "Lekin this late? I mean itni raat ko?" He looked around noticing how deserted the roads were. Not a single person was standing at the bus stop.
The girl bit her lip worriedly as she also looked around and then realized the situation.
But then she shrugged at him, "Haan! Woh ek baje ki bus haina!"
"Ek baje?", Maan was alarmed now and his eyes were wide.
"O koi nai ji!", the girl spoke cheerfully as if trying to be brave, "Hun aur do ghante yahaan reh lungi!"
"What? Rubbish! I mean tum aisa kuch nahi karogi! Gaadi mein baitho! I will drop... I mean main tumhein chod deta hun!", Maan spoke up worried about the girl. Already one guy tried to harass her! What is the guarantee another guy won't come by?
"Phirse vat? Chaddo! Tussi fikar mat keejiye! Main reh lungi! Aapko takleef karne ki koi jaroorat nahi!", the girl spoke up still looking cheerful at him.
"How can you say that? Look at this place! Its so deserted!", Maan spat in frustration as he carded his hand through his hair.
The girl huffed, "Kya bole? Dekho ji! Theek se bolo! Kuch samajh nai aa raha!"
Maan rolled his eyes, his frustration gone with mild annoyance taking its place, "Yeh jagah... How do you say it... khaali. Theek nahi hai!"
The girl smiled sweetly, "Tussi fikar not! Waise bhi tussi menu ghar nahi chod sakte!"
"Kyun nahi chod sakta?", Maan asked in wonder.
"Nahi chod sakte!", the girl spoke.
Maan frowned, "Is it because I am a stranger? Main anjabi.. an... oh what is that word... ajnabi... Yes...ajnabi hun isliye? Don't worry! Main kuch galat nahi karunga! You can trust me! Bharosa you know!"
The girl slapped her forehead, "Ae le! Maine aisa toh nahi kahaa na! Aap bhi na! Kahaa se kahaa pahunch jaate hain! Aap mujhe ghar isliye nahi chod sakte kyunki main yahaan ki hun hi nahi!"
Maan looked confused so the girl explained, "Arre! Main idhar ki nahi hun! Dilli se bahut door hai mera ghar! Usi ka bus din mein do baar aata jaata hai! Dopahar ko ek baar nikalta hai aur raat ko ek baar! Ab subah tak kaun rukega na? Isliye menu aitthe hi rukna padega!"
"Oh ok!", Maan sighed. And then out of curiosity he asked, "Waise which place you belong to? Kahaa ki ho tum?"
The girl smiled, "Hoshiarpur!"
"What?", Maan spoke in wonder. What a coincidence! She was going to the same place he was! Wow!
"Phirse vat?", the girl frowned and Maan could not stop himself from chuckling.
"Main bhi Hoshiarpur jaa raha hun!", Maan explained excitedly.
"Kya? Sachchi?", the girl squealed, "Phir toh chalo chalo! Jaldi chalo! Mennu ghar jaana hai!"
Before he could even move, the girl was off to the jeep. He blinked in shock as she sat on the passenger side and grinned at him eagerly. Strange girl! Maan shook his head and walked off.
And we are off to Hoshiarpur! Let the romance begin!
Also did you notice the change in the main banner?
The mysterious banner is gone and in its place is something different.
You see this story is not just mystery based but also a love story.
So from this chapter, the mystery is going to take back seat and we will focus on Maaneet love story!
Sit back and enjoy the romantic moments!
But don't worry! Mystery is going to be there! We will continue to see the flashbacks and try to understand the reason behind why Maan had those accidents!
Thank you, take care and have fun,
Kalpana
