I don't quite remember, but think I was five or six when my Baba first told me the story of Ceres and Hades and Persephone.
I was riding with Baba on his bicycle and as he told me the part about Persephone not being able to return to earth and her mother Ceres coz she had eaten but a few arils of pomegranate I started crying loudly.
I did not understand the love between a man and a woman at that age, but oh how I loved my Aai. I became Persephone in that moment and my mother Ceres. The very idea that somebody would snatch me away from my mother was torturous and unbearable.
I remember asking Baba why did Persephone's father not save her and I don't quite remember his reply to that only the warm cuddle he gave me and me feeling safe and protected in his arms and thinking that my Baba would not let any Hades take me away from them.
I learnt about Euridyce and Orpheus in the 7th grade. We had a book on Greek Mythology in our school library. I found it when I was twelve. We were not allowed to take the book home, so duringrecess I used to race to the library and read one story a day.
Euridyce and Orpheus made me sob my heart out for them. I could not believe that there could be such unfairness in the world. It was the bare beginning of my understanding of things between a man and a woman and my heart cried out at their separation.
The librarian caught me crying and we had a long discussion about the book and she finally allowed me to check out the book and take it home and I kept it with me for one whole year😛
But my all time favorite story in all of Greek Mythology was that of Psyche whose very name meant soul and Cupid the god of love.
It is the original story of Beauty and the Beast and by far my most favorite version. And one of the few Greek stories that has a happy ending.
Now why did I share all of this I have no clue. But anytime an author uses Greek mythology in their writing a strong sense of nostalgia overtakes me and takes me back to the child inside me😃
It was the perfect setting. It was like you painted it before our eyes. Two lovers lying under thebakula tree unaware that the story is about to become their reality.
She caught up in the hell of the darkness and insecurity that surrounds her and he trying to get her out of it.
But woman I would like a serving of happy ending with this greek saga if you are going that route.
This was an absolutely beautiful update perfectly balanced with romantic joyous moments of their past, juxtapositioned with the tragic events of their present.
Now waiting to see what happens ...
