36.
A phone call from India broke their little game. It was from Savitri Devi, Dev's grandmother.
Tara left him alone to take the call while she went inside.
They didn't speak about that evening again. If Nainatara was interested to see if they took it forward, she didn't acknowledge it. She was curious though.
When he came to bed that night, she felt the weight on the bed and didn't turn but closed her eyes, listening to his deep breathing.
"Are you asleep?" He asked.
"No"
"Dadi called"
"Oh"
"She wants us to visit her"
"Is she alright"
"Yeah, no problem health wise"
"Okay"
They remained silent for a while.
"She expects us to visit her this summer, like old times"
Every summer they had been to India for three weeks and that's the only time she had seen Dev in his element. He didn't say it often but if given a chance he would have gone back to live there, with his family.
The family that's now broken with all the brothers leaving home.
She knew Dadima and she knew how much she wants them to be together, all the brothers again. This might be her attempt to have her grandsons reconcile.
Tara turned her position to look at him. He was looking at the ceiling.
"What are you thinking"
Dev still looked about the patterns of light on the ceiling. She thought he wouldn't answer.
"I was wondering if I would get a chance to reverse time and go back to start over"
"Where would you start over?" Tara asked feeling exhaustion take over her, making her eyes close.
Somewhere in the corner of her mind, she expected him to say that he would start over at the whole fiasco about going to India and ruining Geet's life. Or maybe at the fight that broke the brothers apart. However, she heard his quiet voice now.
"When I was 19, I went to this painting exhibition. I would like to start over there"
The day when he met her.
He turned on his side to look at her now. They were both just a feet apart maybe.
"You don't want to make the biggest mistake of your life in meeting that person again?" She attempted a smile.
"I think I want to amend from there and meet her properly. If I make a list of who all I've wronged, that's how early it would all start. I would like to start making amends from there"
Tara didn't say anything. She blinked her eyes, wanting sleep to take over.
"Good night Dev" she had said and turned her back to him, not wanting to know, not wanting to feel... But something in her heart clenched.
