He typed furiously on his keyboard as a white squared box of sweets sat on his workdesk mocking him. The sweet taste still lingered on his tongue as the muscular organ rolled in his mouth removing the bits of barfi that were stuck in the crevices of his molars.
A little while ago Shiv Saxena his new boss and ex junior had come to his cubicle leaving the confines of his air conditioned cabin to just present him a box of sweets.
And his first statement had been ,'how are you guys working without an ac?'
'The same way you had been working until yesterday.', he had replied.
That had made his mouth shut and he had come straight to the point.
Saxena had mentioned that he had wanted to hand the sweet box personally to him. After all there had been a time when Saxena had worked under him. After 15 minutes of bragging about his responsibilities and work load Saxena had made his way back to his cabin but not before thursting one of the barfis in his mouth.
Shiv saxena or Sanki Saala as he was known among his collegues had been very recently granted a generous promotion.
From a mere junior architect he had jumped to the post of Senior Head Architect of the department.
The same post for which he himself , Maan Singh Khurana had been working his arse off for the last one year.
And quoting Saxena this sweet box was 'Promotion Ki Barfi'. The treat of his success.
Two days ago when his Cheif Hari Sadu had called the team members of Kashi Dam Project for a meeting , he had walked into the conference room with heightened hopes and a heart drumming against his rib cage in rapid and loud manner.
The Kashi Dam Project had been a milestone for the company as well his own career.
Being one of the finest and skilled architects , he had been appointed as the team leader of the project.
There had been expectations from him.
And so he had worked tirelessly.
Many a nights sleep had been sacrificed. And many meals had been skipped for he had been busy working.
The hard work had bore fruits.
The project had been a tremendous success. It had reaffirmed the roots of the company in the Construction field.
The stock exchange market witnessed a sudden leap in the value of the shares of DLF Company. New projects and deals had flowed in owing to his and his team members hard work.
Success parties had been thrown and there had been talks about his talent and capabilities.
Among all this occurences his heart had secretly desired for a promotion and rise in his pay.
The Chief had unreservedly sang his praises and whenever their paths crossed he would pat his back and say, 'Khurana you are an asset to our company.'
Seeing the attitude of Chief he along with many of his staffs had come to believe that it was only a matter of time when Maan Khurana would be the Head Architect.
So it had been quite a blow when the Chief standing behind his leather chair , his hands resting on the top of the chair had announced, 'Ladies and gentlemen i take this oppurtunity to inform that Mr. Shiv Saxena would be the new head architect.'
With fisted hands , his nails leaving crescent shaped marks on the soft skin of his palm , he had watched the Chief shake hands with Sanki Saxena and also seen the shocked expressions of his co members.
But more than being shocked he had been hurt.
Cheated and Betrayed .
These were the two primary emotions he had felt at that moment.
In front of his own eyes he had seen his hard work go in vain.
His ego had also suffered a blow.
Sanki Saxena had minimal knowledge of architecture. He couldnt distinguish between buildings of Victorian or Elizabethan age. God knows how and from where had he acquired his degree. But it was a universal fact that man was an inefficient fool.
All he knew was to find faults and flatter higher officials.
He sighed mentally. Wasnt the skill of flattery one of the biggest and most coveted art in the corporate world. Whoever knew the art , his road to success was smoother.
With a throbbing head he had felt like leaving the meeting then and there itself. However he had not.
A man of control , he had not let his smile falter even if the pain that emanated in his heart was unbearable . He had congratulated that insufferable man and had patiently waited for the meeting to get over .
