Part 31
He looked at the skyline of New York City
Just then the manager called. Maan didn't even want to answer the call. He didn't want to be unprofessional.
Maan - yes
Manager - Look Maan... Ms. Handa came to me and said she thought you were brilliant at what you do and didn't want your talents to go waste. Plus, she thought that you are working on what you do best, and what you love the most would restore your spirits, which she so adored from the moment she met you. She was looking at investing in something other than what her family's been doing for decades anyway. She thought it would be perfect if you started your own company. She didn't want you to know it was her because she knew you would never agree. So she asked me to take over. But she wanted nothing to do with it. She's just a capitalist. She just wanted reports on a monthly basis to see the progress. She wanted you to have full control.
Maan couldn't believe what he was hearing. And worse, he didn't know how to feel! He always thanked Geet for his recovery. His getting back on the business was the only thing he thought he didn't owe to her. But he was wrong. What was she trying to do? Was she buying him?
He was still confused with this losing battle of emotions.
Manager took a deep breath - see Maan, U have to give her all the credit.
Maan roared - What credit? For tricking me into managing her business venture?
Manager was firm - For getting you back on your feet. For believing in you when you didn't believe in yourself anymore, and employing all means to make sure that you do again.. Chase your dream...
Maan was upset because he felt manipulated and played. Geet Handa, her money and her silly games
Manager - common Maan be reasonable, Just think about how good Ms. Handa had been for you
Maan - Maybe that's the problem. She is too good for me. And now, I found out that I was a business venture! Welcome to the lifestyle of the rich and the famous, right. Everything I was running away from.
Maan just hung up the phone
After spending the whole evening into night alone Maan came back defeated to the office.
Sasha - where the hell have you been. I have been so worried for you?
Maan told everything what he heard learned about investor.
Sasha - I spoke to the Manager when u were not picking your phone.
Sasha was not really surprised. She expected Maan to take it positively, the way she saw it. But he seemed so angry. She was losing her patience with him. She just couldn't think of him going back into that sulking mode again.
Sasha - what is wrong with you Maan. She did everything for you.
Maan - No Sasha don't you see it, I was just some investment for her.
Sasha closed her eyes in dismay. Then she threw her hands in the air - Alright, fine! I've told you everything I feel about it . Maybe it's time you wake up from this dream and face reality Maan. It's time to break your fake relationship with Geet Handa so you can finally see the difference between what's fake and what's real.
Maan arrogantly said - Well Sasha, I can't break up with Geet, if she wasn't really my girlfriend, can I?
Sasha - Are you sure, she's not your Girlfriend, Maan?
She stared at him intensely. He opened his mouth to respond but surprisingly, no sound came out. Probably.. Guess he wasn't entirely sure what his answer would be.
Sasha sighed. And for your information, she's only willing to invest in California if you're a hundred percent sure you want to move there. Otherwise, she's willing to fly in and out of Manhattan as frequently as it takes.
She gave him one hard look and then she left him alone.
He was trying to sort out the way he felt. It's been a while since he felt heartbroken, and now, he was feeling like that again. But why did he feel this way about something that wasn't really his? Geet and him were nothing, and they could never be anything!
Well thats what he was trying to believe..
So she was his boss. He worked for her. Now, it's even more complicated.
But shouldn't it be complicated only if he was dating her for real? They were just friends! A couple of times, they did slip away from the boundaries of morality... but...
He thought maybe Sasha is right. It was time to face reality. Because in reality, as he knew it, Geet and him were nothing. No commitments. No strings attached.
She had done him plenty of favors, he would repay his debt. She invested in his talents. He would established her business. In a few months, he would be able to show her more profits. and then.. he would be free to go. It would also give him time to look for something else, somewhere else. It wouldn't be a lost investment for her because he would hand it over to somebody capable... someone like he thought more and decided like Sasha.
It was time to wake up from this dream and start facing reality. He planned to tell his family that he broke up with Geet. He thought about telling.. She was too serious about getting married, whereas, he had learned the value of not rushing into things when he broke up with Nt. Probably he could say he still wanted to be single longer, and something like she wanted to settle down right away. He could say she was perfect but he is probably not perfect enough for her.
A huge part of him felt shattered. Just as if he really did break up with Geet... as if the relationship was real. His heart felt heavy. He almost felt 100 times worse than he had felt when he had broken up with Nt.
He sulked for a whole week. He did go to office. But he didn't answer his phone. He was lost in darkness.
His friends Raghav, Vicky, Sasha and his sister Sam stormed into his apartment on Saturday
They knew everything about it from Sasha, still waited for him to be more reasonable.
Vicky - why are u not answering the dam phone?
Maan casually slipped back into the couch - oh.. No charge I think
They just stared at him..
Maan - ok, if u didn't hear it already. Geet is my investor and I work for her now.
They were all still staring down at him
Maan hated this staring treatment - What?
Are you not going to say anything?
Vicky sighed - we would. But you're not going to like it.
he raised a brow at him. When did Vicky care about my feelings? When he opens his mouth and lets his brains spill out!
Maan - Just say it already
Vicky shrugged - are you sure Geet isn't your girlfriend?
Maan - She is a friend.
He just softly accepted sometimes, she's a fling. Because I wasn't ready to date just yet
Sasha - That's full of crap, Maan. You were ready to date ages ago. You just didn't want to. You don't feel the need to because Geet is there
Maan sighed - I agree she is my rock!. But I knew from the start that we could never be. Whatever we had was temporary. We're like the best of friends.
But beyond that... I'm scared it wouldn't last. So... I would rather have her as a friend forever.
Sam got agitated now - Then why aren't you dating anybody else? Not even one date, Maan
Raghav - Your thoughts, your time, your days are pre-occupied by Geet Handa and you don't mind. In fact, you love it!
Sam - Look at your house Maan
Vicky - So she's nothing to you!
Maan was not liking being cornered like this, he just turned his head - She is not. She is... a dream. And it's time to wake up now.
His friends and sister looked at each other wearily.
Then Sam said to him - Okay! Try. One date. Go out with another girl. Maybe you'll be able to tell the difference.
Maan sighed yet again - I'm not sure I'm ready.
Sasha - Oh you're ready to have a relationship, Maan. You're so over Nt, which was the point of your whole pretense with Geet. But still you refused to date because you're not waking up from your dream.
Sam - If that's what Geet is! It's her you want
Maan - It doesn't matter! Girls like Geet want you for a while... but in the end, they are bound to marry their male counterparts. Rich. Successful.
Vicky - Then try going out with somebody else. Maybe you don't need to move on from Nt anymore. You need to move on from Geet
That thought still echoed in his head until the next day. He wasn't himself when he met with this preferred interior designer of Sams friend.
Geet hadn't called him or texted him in days. He could bet she spoke to the manager, and maybe even the great Ms Handa needed time to make up excuses.
Thanks for the lovely comments and likes
Love u all
