Agreed, personal choice takes front seat. I had no problem on what the characters chose to do. But I felt the book and the movie is out there for everyone. People without any background about South Indians and Punjabis are going to become aware of them through this. And how many people are going to break these practices down to individual choices rather than seeing it as a common feature? For instance, foreigners visiting india are thought to be okay with flings and exposing as well as other things shown by media. In reality you and I know it's not the truth and it's a person's personal choice. But most of the people don't think twice and immediately make assumptions that causes trouble for both parties involved. Media portrayal of many things is exaggerated but how many of us realize the exaggeration without actually coming to know of the truth.
