Chapter 6

They reached KC. Lunch time was over and everyone was working. It looked more to Geet like a storm had hit the place. Papers and files were everywhere and people were buzzing around in hectic. No wonder they don't get any work done here' she thought.

Maan got Tasha to make the contract and signed as soon the paper was in front of him. Geet on the other hand read it multiple times and then signed.

"Ok Mr Khurana, I will see you on Monday then." She took her bag and was leaving.

"Wait, let me drop you." Maan volunteered. Even he didn't know why he just said that.

"No thank you, I don't take favours from employers." She threw him a quick smile and left.

On her way she saw Pinky.

"Pinky, come for dinner to my place today. And bring Adi along; I have some news for you guys." Pinky nodded and wondered why Geet came personally to tell her. She didn't know about the contract. Geet called Vicky, too. And made her was back home.

Vicky had wondered what made Geet call him to her place. Since he had started to work with her he had seen her serious and tired, concentrating fully on her work. The story that Adi had told him had just increased the respect he had for Geet. He knew it was not easy to change a lifestyle from on day to another and that, too, without much help. From what Adi had told him, she used to be pretty lively and he somehow wanted to see his friend like this. He grabbed a bunch of flowers on his way to MC and knocked on Geet's door. Geet welcomed him with a huge smile, Vicky was amazed. It was the first time he saw her smile so genuinely and it was a beautiful one he admitted.

"Ok, now that we are all together let me tell you what had happened today." She narrated how she wanted to do grocery shopping and ended up in Maan's car. They were shocked at Maan's behaviour but that was nothing compared to the shock they received a minute later.

"So from Monday onwards I will be secretary to Maan Khurana." She concluded. Pinky choked on her burger, Vicky spit out the water he was drinking and Adi's jaw dropped open. She looked from on person to the other and resembled a small girl who wanted a reward for successfully burning down her own house.

"Geet, do you know what this means?" Vicky managed.

"Yes, I do. I will be working as secretary to the MD of KC. And since I will be working half day mornings only I can easily cope with my work here, too. It will be fun." Pinky and Adi couldn't see much fun in this. They knew Maan and he was not easy to deal with. Joking around with him was like playing with fire and one was sure to get burnt sooner or later. They tried to explain.

"What if he finds out you are MC's MD?"

"I got him to sign that he is accepting me as his secretary regardless of who I am. He will not be able to do anything apart from banging his head on the wall when he finds out." She laughed. She saw that all three were not really taking it that lightly.

"Let me tell you what made me do it." She sat down and narrated.

"Before I got married I used to work in the lab of my company. It was a very boring job and my friend and I spent quite a lot of time, having fun. Once we were in a meeting and playing hangman. The meeting was going on and on and we weren't interested either. Then she gave me a word which I didn't know. I asked her for the meaning and she tried to explain. The meeting was on and my boss saw us talking. He told us to shut up but we kept on. Then he burst out and said: "Can't you stupid girl keep quiet for a moment?" Everyone was shocked and especially the MD of the company as her daughter was giving her first presentation. The girl ran out crying and my boss got almost fired. After that he turned mad every time he saw me or my friend and we made a point of annoying him some more. I used to have a great time, now all I do is work and work and I miss the old days." All three laughed. They had never thought that their Geet could be so mischievous.

"Anyways, when Sohan died he made me promise I'll try and get on with life. He loved my smile and always wanted it to be on my face." Geet tried to smile but her tears gave her away. Pinky hugged her and Adi and Vicky consoled her. On one hand they wanted Geet to get on but they weren't sure if Maan was the right person to prank with. Vicky and Adi talked for some time while Pinky helped Geet set up dinner. They had to take some precaution before Geet joined KC. Both had worked there and knew it was not easy. Geet still hadn't recovered much, she was a little underweight and her sleeplessness was not good either.

Adi told Geet about it.

"Geet, if you want to work under Maan then we will not stop you, but there are a few things we want you to accept. First you will not walk to KC but at all times take your car with driver. I know you love walking and driving but having a driver is always good. Second we are going to arrange for some body guards. You are after all the MD of Mishra Constructions and we do not want anything to happen to you. Also you will get yourself a personal assistant. She will be in constant contact with you and share your work load." Geet protested. This was all unnecessary.

"Geet, I see you as my younger sister. I just want to make sure you are alright. You spend almost all of you time here where we see you and now when you are gone we want to make sure you are ok. Please." Adi told Geet. A few more drops of tears spilled as Adi referred to her as his sister. She was overwhelmed with his love and concern that she didn't refuse.

Maan Khurana, get ready to have some fun. Geet is not going to make your life easy for you.' Vicky chuckled at his thought.

Riya switched off her mobile phone. Although she was living in a hostel she had special permission from the principle to keep a phone with her at all times. Geet had insistent as there was the only way to communicate with her. Armaan would meet his sister every weekend for her to check if he is doing ok. She looked at the photograph of her brother's wedding. Her bhabi had been the most beautiful person on earth she had said. The wedding had been fun and she cried at the thought of how her bhabi managed now. She had liked Geet from the first day Sohan had introduced her. She was a good friend whom she could tell all her problems no matter how big and Geet would always find a solution. She would also be concerned like a mother she never had. Armaan had been upset with Geet as she had not very soon after Sohan's death sent both off to hostel but Riya understood. Geet could do a lot but managing the company and both of them at the same time she couldn't have done. She also knew that Geet feared to break down at the sight of Armaan. Her little brother was very much like Sohan and she was missing him no doubt.

Just a few more weeks and she would finally meet her bhabi again. She sat down to study some more, she wanted to make her bhabi proud.

Chapter 7

Monday morning arrived and Geet got ready for work. She had instructed for all important meetings which required her presence to be shifted to lunch or after. She had also set out an ad for a personal assistant. She twirled around and inspected her attire. She packet a small bag and took off to KC. Her car and driver were waiting for her. To her surprise, the driver was not an old man, but quite young. He was wearing a uniform with hat. He was leaning against the car and smoking.

"Excuse me, are you my driver?" she asked him.

"Yes miss, my name is Raj and I will be your chauffeur from today." Geet wondered.

"How come you are doing such a job? You look good enough to do something proper."

"I love cars. I love driving them. I have a full licence and am very confident of bringing you to your destination in record time without getting into trouble with police. Anyways, it is not that I need a job but my dad said he will kick me out if I don't do something better with my time than have fun with friends" Geet thought. Even she loved driving and this guy just admitted he was doing it for the fun bit.

"Ok, I'll give you a chance, but call me Geet, not miss. And no smoking in the car, I can't stand the smell. Also, if it makes you feel any better you can come in casuals. I don't really believe in this entire uniform thing." Raj gave her a bright smile before saluting.

"Yes boss."

Geet noticed the body guards that followed her at a distance. She had their number fed into her phone by Adi and gave them instructions not to enter KC but to wait till she either called them or came out herself.

She reached KC at 8.30. Pinky was there and showed her to her cabin.

"DD has given me these files for you to work on. He also likes black coffee without sugar first thing on his table. Better not argue with him and never say no. Anything else just come and ask me." She left and Geet set to do her work. She knew there were papers that weren't meant for her eyes as they were client information but she was not some one to misuse her position. She worked on the files as if all the information was unknown to her and at 9 was done with a reasonable amount. She remembered what Pinky had said about the coffee and smile naughtily. She wanted to show Maan Khurana that he could not have his way with her. She always did what she wanted and when she wanted. Not even Sohan could get her to do something if her mind was set not to. The siren rang and she made her was to the pantry. She heard the entry of Maan. With the coffee mug in one and the files in the other hand she knocked on his cabin.

"Come in" he said.

"Good morning Mr Khurana, here are the files. I have worked through these and will finish the rest till lunch." She laid the files in front of him. He was going to ask for the mug, when she started drinking. She looked at his expectantly.

"Any problems?" she asked with a straight face.

"Where is my coffee?" he asked her.

"Oh, I didn't make any. You want some?"

"Yes"

"Yes what?" Maan looked at her.

"You forgot the magical word." Maan still looked confused. Geet sighed.

"You are supposed to say please at this point." Maan jumped up.

"No I don't. It is your job as my secretary to bring me my coffee; I don't have to ask for it."

"Well, if you expect ME to do anything for you, you will have to learn to say please. Till then I am in my office finishing my work." She stuck up her nose and walked out on a fuming Maan.

Geet didn't look to her left even once that morning since she knew Maan was angry on her. But he was the one who had invited trouble and now he had to suffer.

Maan kept looking at Geet but she didn't turn her face. He had got Tasha to bring coffee as he was no where near saying please. He looked through the files Geet had given him. He looked close to find mistakes but to his misfortune her work was perfect. She had put much dedication into work, Maan could see. What surprised him most was her speed. One file usually took him more than an hour to finish and here she was, doing almost trice as much in the same time. The clock struck 12 and Geet entered with the rest of the files. She had finished earlier but sat at her desk arranging for something. She had also hid her bag in the cupboard as she might need it at some time.

"Mr Khurana, I am done for the day. See you tomorrow."

"Wait, you can't leave till I don't let you go."

"Actually I can. And I will since my official working time is over. You have my number in case there is anything with the files. Good bye." Geet rushed out before Maan could stop her. He slumped back into his chair cursing himself for having such a secretary. He cursed himself for every secretary but this one was at least doing a good job. He turned his chair and saw Geet walk towards a car. A guy was leaning on the car, smoking. He wore casuals and sat on the driver seat. Maan wanted to know why Geet was going off with this person. Why am I getting concerned? She can go with whomever she wants to, can't she?' Maan asked himself.

Back at MC a couple of candidates were waiting for an interview. Geet wanted to interview them herself and made her way to her cabin. One after the other she interviewed the candidates but they were all unsuitable in one way or another. Then a girl walked in. She was scared. She held a piece of paper in her hand and asked the receptionist for Geet's cabin. She knocked and Geet called her in.

"Ma'am, I ... I am..." She stuttered. Geet saw her scared and nervous expression.

"Calm down I am not going to eat you. Sit." Geet got up and made the girl sit on the chair. She took the piece of paper from her hand and saw it was the ad.

"The interview time is over, how come you came just now?"

"Actually, I was downstairs all the time. I am scared of interviews you see." She said in a small voice. Geet laughed. She had the same problem.

"Ok, no need to be scared. You do know I am looking for a personal assistant. I need you to be available during office hours all the time. You will need to do various office tasks and at times some personal work, it that ok with you?" She nodded.

"And your name, I didn't get it at the start."

"Muskaan."

"Well, do you know how to cook, clean, type and most importantly can you make coffee?" There was a hint of a smile on Muskaan's face.

"I can do all sorts of house hold work. And I am a fast typist, too."

"That is settled then. Where do you live?" She gave her address. Not so far from here, that is good.'

"Ok Muskaan you are hired. I don't think office attire is needed for you but what ever you wear it should be decent. Come let me introduce you to the others. You are my PA but at times will have to work with them, too."

Geet took Muskaan by her hand and introduced her to Adi, Vicky, Romeo, Yash and all the others as her new PA. Muskaan was a little nervous and Geet asked her about it when they were back in the office waiting for the contract.

"Muskaan, you got the job now so why are you so nervous."

"I don't want to do a mistake otherwise I might lose this job, too."

"What happened at the previous job?"

"I was fired because I came one minute after 9am." Geet wondered who could be so strict.

"Where did you work previously?"

"Khurana Constructions." Geet understood.

"Now I understand. Don't worry, I am not like that. Just chill. Think of me as your friend and not boss, I would prefer that. And yes, just as everyone else you will call me by my first name, Geet." The contract was brought in and Muskaan happily signed it. She was shy and nervous but she tried to do all the tasks with precision. At the end of the day she had learned quite a lot from Geet and had settled in well. Geet came to her cabin at seven as she was packing up.

"Muskaan, I want you to have this." She handed her a packet. Muskaan opened it and saw a new phone.

"But Geet, how can I take this, it looks expensive." Geet smiled.

"Don't worry about the money. You need a phone now as you will need to stay contacted with me." Muskaan's eyes filled up.

"Thank you" she said. Geet gave her a hug. She knew the sort of person Muskaan was. She was from a middle class back ground that lived from what they had and luxury was not something they were used to. She was also very emotional and Geet liked it about her.
