"I come here often, when my pensive thoughts take over and they need a release."

She led him down a cobbled alleyway. The flowers trickled from the stoned walls, threatening to touch them. But not quite.

He followed her, until the path came to a stop and the sea lay out before them. Geet sat down on a rock, her sandals touching the pebbles beneath her feet. Maan stared out into the horizon, feeling as lost as the waves which continuously moved from shore to shore.

"What do you remember about Dev?"

His eyes flitted to her, and found her looking up at him intently.

"What's the time context of your question?"

"Childhood? Adolescence? I don't know, I just-" she took a deep breath. "I realise I sound incredibly nosy right now, and I apologise. I just find the dynamic between you two overpowering. There's something unsettled, and it's bothering him. And you."

She turned back to the waters, and he wished he could tell her she was the answer to her own question.

Instead, he pulled out a cigarette and took the lighter to its tip. She heard the click and looked at him.

"You'll have to excuse me on this occasion. The vice is too strong to ignore."

"I'll try not to breathe."

They remained in silence for a while, Geet lost in the waves and Maan lost in the haunts of their forgotten past. Finally, when he'd had enough of the tobacco, he flicked it away and stuffed his hands into his pockets.

"We never really got on. There was an unspoken rivalry that threatened our existences."

"Was he the reason you left home?"

"Partially. But not entirely. I don't begrudge him for myself walking away. That was my own choice."

She picked up a pebble and aimed it for the sea. The pebble landed too far from the shore to be accepted as a part of the ocean.

"That was a rubbish throw."

"I've found that painting has weakened my wrist, instead of strengthening it."

"But it strengthens your soul."

Geet glanced at his side profile, the flashback of last night's experience with her brushes flooding back to her. "Sometimes."

I have always wondered about this question. How hard is it for the others who have to restrain themselves when they know the full picture.

This reminds me of the Spanish steps when we discussed this...
