Chapter 9
Maan was standing silently and motionlessly in front of the school. He was totally lost. He was so lost that he couldn't hear his phone ringing. He felt his hand being shake vigorously, he looked down and then his eyes met Yash's scared and teary eyes. After looking at those eyes, he realized he can't be weak. He had to stay strong, for his kids and for Geet. Geet? He started searching his pockets for his ringing phone. He took out the phone from his pocket and looked at the screen, it was flashing Geet's name. He wasn't sure if he should answer it or not. What was he supposed to tell her? But he knew that he had to take the call or she will be paranoid. He looked at Yash and signaled him to stay quiet and answered the phone.
He took a deep breath and said, "haan jaan, bolo?"
"Maan, what took you so long? Is everything okay?" Geet questioned.
"Yes, everything is fine." He tried to assure her.
"Then why did it take you so long to answer my call?" She wasn't satisfied with that answer.
"Actually, I dropped the phone in the car so took me some time to answer," he tried his best to stay calm while talking to her.
"Okay, fine! When are you going to get here?" She enquired.
"It's going to take some time, too much traffic." he answered.
"Okay, I'm waiting!"
"Bye!"
"Bye!"
He put the phone back in his pocket and kneeled down in front of Yash.
"Dad, Veer..." Yash started but couldn't say anything else and tear started spilling out of his eyes. His vision got blurry and he tried to wipe the tears away, with the back of his hand, to clear his view.
"Hey, champ!" Maan said, wiping Yash's tears away, "Don't cry. I will not let anything happen to Veer. Nothing, Okay!" he said adamantly.
"Promise?" He asked, still scared for his brother.
"Pakka promise." Maan hugged him tight.
He walked toward the car with Yash, and took out his phone to make few phone calls but instead he received a call from a private number. He immediately answered the call.
"Hello?"
"Mr. Maan Singh Khurana!"
"Yes?"
"What kind of a father are you? You couldn't even take care of your son, huh?"
"Who are you? And how do you know about my son?"
"How do I know? How do I know? Maybe I know it because I have your son."
"WHAT? You bas***d! Who are you?"
"Tsk tsk! You shouldn't be cursing like that in front of your kid."
"What the hell do you want? And where is Veer? You know what, I will get you arrested for this."
"I don't think contacting the police is a very good idea."
"What do you want? That poor kid has done no harm to you." Maan said helplessly.
"He hasn't but you have, Mr. Khurana!" With that he disconnected the call.
Maan kept staring at his phone's screen. "He hasn't but you have, Mr. Khurana!" This kept playing again and again in his mind. He couldn't believe that his son was kidnapped, that too because someone wants to take revenge on him. What was he going to do now? He couldn't inform the cops. He wasn't going to put his son's life in danger by informing them. But he still couldn't figure out who the kidnapper was. The voice did sound a little familiar, but then he talks to so many clients on daily basis. Could it be one of the business rivals? Or someone else? He felt so weak for not being able to protect his children.
He looked at the passenger seat and Yash was crying silently. He looked frightened and worried for his brother. His heart went out for him. They didn't deserve this. And he wasn't going to let anyone harm his family. He will give the kidnapper whatever he wants and save Veer no matter what.
The car stopped in front of the house, and Maan took a deep breath. He can't hide the truth from Geet and has to tell her. They got out of the car, and Yash ran inside.
When Maan came inside the house, Yash was hugging Geet tightly and Geet was hugging him back, while rubbing his back at the same time.
"What happened, baby?" Geet asked, sensing something wrong.
She pulled him out of the hug to see his red and teary eyes. She looked up at Maan, but he was constantly staring at the floor. He just couldn't look her in the eye. She also noticed that Veer wasn't in the room. "Where is Veer?" She asked Yash. She didn't get any reply from him so she asked him again.
"Tell me Yash, where is your brother?" She asked him sternly this time.
"He is gone."
