Shattering came hope
As the coin flipped mid-air
It rose again but was never meant to be'
Such was the despair!
"Stay"
He pleaded.
She looked back, chocolate brown pleading hazel.
And she unconsciously found herself seating beside him.
He sighed in relief. He knew what she meant by open wounds. He understood her plight, her dilemma of all these years. He understood her anger and her resentment. He, himself had gone through that; albeit unaware because he was too busy 'conquering world.' He had been thumped down and clamped with responsibilities and his own fierce drive to build his world.
He had gotten lost somewhere on his way to success. Every day as he stepped an inch closer to that world, he left a part of himself behind until one fine day when he looked back and couldn't find the way he had come through. He had lost his way back to normalcy, waking and sleeping like a robot, walking and talking like a machine; living a hopeless, ruthless life until his savior; his Geet came back to him.
He had thought to let the matter be when he saw Geet beaming in another man's arms; After all his love had been selfish, but not so much to snatch her of her dignity and happiness. If she found her share of happiness, he would gladly accept his share of sorrow. But that wasn't to be! Now when he had seen the same longing in her eyes as she had stood at their meeting place by the sea, no way on earth was he going to let go. Now when he had seen despair shatter to reveal hope, he wasn't going to let go. Because he had seen a flicker in her eyes, for a moment he had seen it. It was hope.
Hope for them.
And now he wanted to fan that hope; to make it into belief, forever. He wanted nothing more than her now; nothing more than her love. And he, as the world knew; got what he wanted. Maan Singh Khurana would get his Geet back.
They sipped their coffee in silence. Silence spanning eight years and seven seas engulfing them.
Geet was frozen. This couldn't be true. He couldn't come back. Not now after the time had passed. Just twelve hours ago she had hoped and hoped and prayed for his return. And now when he had, albeit at a wrong time she wished he never had!
A coin had flipped mercilessly over her fate in a span of twelve hours, from hope to despair to a hope that never would be!
How time changed it all!
Now she was Yash's fiance and she wouldn't break the engagement.
"You don't love him"
He said between two sips, looking at her nonchalantly.
"And who are you to decide! Are you some miracle man? No right!"
She snapped, emptying her pent up anger on him. She wanted to beat this man blue and black now! Why had he come so late?
"If you loved him'."
He whispered as he leaned in closer on her.
"...then you wouldn't be here at our meeting point, at this hour of night in your engagement saree."
He murmured looking at her saree, as her face flushed at having him so close. His effect was still there. Currents jolted her, more than ever now with eight years of distance.
But then the fuse bulb went on!
"How do you know about my engagement? And Yash?"
"So the bas***d is called Yash"
"Dare you!"
"And what if I do"
"Ugghh you're impossible"
And he smirked at her frustrated form. She looked so utterly delectable like that.
His Geet.
"Don't smirk at me now. Answer me."
She scolded.
"How do you know about it?"
"Because, I was there."
And her eyes widened.
"You were there?"
She blurted out without thinking twice.
He shrugged.
Her mind reeled.
He was there.
He had come.
Her instinct hadn't gone wrong.
Indeed he had come!
But what good was it now when she was engaged to Yash. She was to marry him two months later. And now she couldn't break his heart. She couldn't let her parents down. That much she owed them.
But what about my own heart?
"Always mine"
Maan whispered, as if he had been an audience to her inner talks.
"Huh?"
She asked confused. And then only did she realize that she had voiced her thought aloud!
"You're heart is always mine Geet. You're always mine. You were then and you are now. I can see it there in your eyes."
He said huskily, gently cupping her cheek. This time he didn't withdraw because he sensed her emotions in her eyes.
"Come back Geet"
His words soothed her, healed her like rains calmed parched lands. His confession tingled her whole being as her insides melted into a velvety mush. This is what she had always wanted to hear'
He had come back.
He had come back for her.
He had come back for her, for their love!
But now the time had gone.
She looked away, now exhausted at her inner conflict.
"Please Geet. Come back love."
"No I can't. Now, I can't turn back. I am engaged Maan"
She said looking at the vast sea in front.
"But you don't love him. It was always us Geet. Don't be so harsh on us."
And that broke the dam. She had been holding on to her fury, leashing her anger. But now the dam broke and her anguish knew no bounds.
"Harsh?"
"I am being harsh Maan? Then what about the last eight years? Weren't they harsh?"
She said pushing his hand off. He looked away guiltily.
"Don't look away Maan. Look at me. Weren't you harsh throughout?"
"One phone call.."
"One e-mail."
"A letter at least!"
"You could have sent something for me to hold on to! But you just disappeared out of the circuit. What was I to hold on to Maan? You left no trails"
Geet whimpered, now about to sob. The day's exhaustion and her emotional fragility were taking a toll on her.
"But I am back Geet. I am here. I know it took me a while to realize and get back to you but..."
His sentence was cut midway.
"A while? It took you a life time to get back Maan. A bloody life time. And now it's too late...
Oh! Why did you come back?"
She questioned herself more than him.
"Because I love you Mishty."
What would she say???
Where would his three words take them???
Is it a beginning or already the end!
