L0lz. Guys; they might be young but it's 1941 LOL, and the war at that time had been catastrophic; so even little kids knew they were not going to see their daddies again; and only women and small kids were left when the men went to war.
*-_-_-_-_-*
"Geet, why are you so lost..." her mother asked frowning as she laid the baby on the bed. "Why are you so lost...!'!" her mother scolded. Geet turned red as she tucked her hair behind her ear. "Geet; you're frying the food!" her mother shouted annoyed. Geet's brain was working in slow motion to register what her mother was telling her.
"I said the food is burning" her mother repeated annoyed. "Oh" Geet said wistfully and went to turn off the stove. "What have you been thinking?" her mother asked. Geet's mind sped up thinking of an excuse; it was the first time she was lying. She turned her back to her; without facing her so that she would buy the story "I was thinking how hard father works for us" she said gently as she brushed her blue dress.
Her mother smiled. "Don't daydream too much; it's not good for you" her mother said. "I'm going to do my homework" Geet said walking to her room. Her mother grimaced a little but did not say anything.
"What homework" she thought to herself grinning. "I can't concentrate on anything" she reflected. She lay on her bed thinking of him. She stared at herself in the mirror admiring her beauty. She felt suddenly shy; feeling all grown-up.
"You should not be proud of your beauty" she could hear the mother's voice in her head telling her. For once; she felt an unknown feeling creeping down her heart making her all excited. "I wish...'some day we'll meet again...'"
It had been one week since she had met Maan near the factory; and every time she went to drop her father's food; she would slow down trying to see where he was. But unfortunately the whole week he was absent. She had not seen him anywhere.
"I'm dreaming something out of my reach" she concluded to herself. "I must forget him...'" she thought as she was returning home. She fixed her barrette which matched with her yellow dress. She had collected all her blue shade dress and had kept them safe and tidy. Obviously her mother had questioned her why she was doing that; she had told her honestly that one of her friends told her she looked pretty in blue. Luckily that moment Thomas started to cry and her mother did not see the blush on her cheeks adoring her face as she beamed.
"Hello there" she heard a voice. She was so startled that she was shaken with fear. She frowned as she saw Maan standing against the rocks. He smiled at her and she slowly returned his smile.
"You should stop scaring me" she said a bit furious.
He laughed throwing his head backward in his own mad way that fascinated her and replied "you are a little scary-cat". She frowned; not at all pleased that he was teasing her.
She did not reply but fixed the ground. "Every time we meet; you're in shock" he laughed. Geet looked at him intently. "You always plan to scare me...'" she said and could not help laughing along with him.
"You look good when you smile" he said.
"Thank you" she said humbly as she lowered her eyes "that's nice of you..." He gazed at her and said "you did not wear blue today". She did not know what to answer. "I did not know that I was going to run into you" she responded shyly. "It doesn't matter; you look good; but blue suits you the best".
"So where do you study?" he asked. He had been thinking of her when he returned home. He even had skipped dinner. He had never met someone like her and he was attracted to her; he knew it. It was so easy to joke with her and talk. She was so nice and shy.
"At the Convent" she replied. He nodded. "Dora used to study there until she got married". Dora was Maan's elder sister who got married last year. "I know" she simply replied as he looked lost in his thoughts.
"Anyway; I did not know Mr. Rogers was your father" Maan said as he said as he ran his hands in his hair.
"You know my father?" she asked a little shocked. Maan frowned "isn't he the friend of the one called Albright?" he asked. Geet nodded. "I thought he had only a little son" Maan said thinking. "My little brother" she replied softly. He nodded "I remember a year or two; dad was talking about giving Rogers some vacations but then with Dora's engagement he had to postpone it" Maan replied still in his thoughts. "Yes" Geet answered "father was telling me".
She smiled as she softly spoke to him. "So you're already engaged?" he asked grinning. Terror spread on her face; he had noticed it. "No, no, no" she said shaking her head "I haven't, my father said he'll wait till my eighteens" she replied gazing at him. He nodded "Dora got married at twenty-three".
"So that means you don't have any boyfriend" he said teasingly. Now she had a shocking face. "I can't; for my mother it's a crime to have one and a sin to think about having one" she answered.
"She's was born in a religious family" she added. He nodded and said "yes; my mother thought the same; lucky that there's dad; or else Dora and Dorina would have got married in their fifteens or they would have wore veils" he laughed. She smiled with him. He was hilarious at times.
"So you've a girlfriend?" she asked softly playing with the flowers. "No" he said frowning. "Nobody likes me" he said with a fake sadness. "Nobody likes you" Geet repeated playing along; utterly shocked "you'd see the girls at the Convent; some are dying to marry you" she added dramatically. She had some drama lessons when she was thirteen. He laughed as she pretended to be horrified.
Then he became serious. "Are you serious?" he asked. Geet nodded "they can kill each other...'for you". He had a surprised face "oh...will you kill someone then?" he said teasingly. Geet was shocked to be asked that. She simply stared at him. Did he come to know about her little crush?
"But I like you" Maan said gravely and played with the soil with his shoes. Geet smiled at him. "So do I" she added shyly as he gazed at her.
He plucked a bunch of yellow dandelions and gave it to Geet.
"For you" he said gently. "Thank you" she said politely as she played with the petals. "You're a gentleman" she said smiling. She did that a lot when she was around it; the smile crept from nowhere.
"Me? A Gentleman? Hell! If Gabe hears that; he'll kills me...'hell! He's sweeter than me around women! So brutish, nah" he said wearily and then he realized what he just said.
Geet watched him eye-widened.
"Oh sorry; sorry; I did not mean to be rude around you" he said apologizing and looked around. He picked up a grass and offered to her.
She raised an eyebrow as he said "I want to say sorry for my rude behavior...'I have not find any flowers around; so this grass; imagine it as a flower" he said gravely.
She chuckled at his boyish attitude. She remarked how polite he was to be nice to her.
"Is it true you know how to fly a plane" she asked. "Yes" he added without thinking; it was easy to talk to her.
"My father won't let me drive a car...'" she added sadly. He smiled.
She looked around. "Will you be here tomorrow?" she asked and then clapped her hands around her mouth looking ashamed as she asked; she brushed and turned away. "I'm sorry; it just came" she said without turning to face him.
He stepped close to her; her head brushing against her shoulder. "It's okay...'you know something" he said. It seemed husky to her and she could faint any moment.
"You look pretty when you're shy". She flushed at his comment. "I better go" she said brushing her dress again "mother will wait for me".
He smiled as she walked away and waved at him.
She could not go to the factory the next day. Thomas was ill and had caught the Bostonian flu. She had not meet Maan and she felt bad and uneasy but Thomas' health was her priority.
"She did not come" Maan said restlessly as Gabe watched him making rounds kicking his motorcycle. [Planes; train; ships existed at that time but not a brand new Boeing or a Cruise or a damn branded cycle or a Lamborghini]
"At this time she's at school" Gabe said frowning. "So; she promised to come yesterday" he frowned "she lied and did not come". "She might have had some problems with her mother; the way you described her; it seemed that way" Gabe said reasonably.
Maan's face darkened. "Damn" he cursed "I did not think about that" he said. He had no school and he was one year ahead of everyone. "We can sneak at the Convent" Maan suggested. Gabe's face gloomed "stupid; just wait till tomorrow". Maan was annoyed yet Gabe was right.
"Will he be waiting?" she thought as she returned from the factory. She was tired; her studies were bulky and Thomas was still ill.
"Where had you been?" he asked in an angry and serious tone. She stopped dead in her tracks. She had been expecting it; so she was not frightened this time.
He was close behind her. He frowned.
"You're not answering" he said. She gawked at him as he was so close; she saw anger in his eyes.
"I'm so sorry; Thomas; my little brother was ill...'I had to look after him and I had so many home works'...I'm re-...'" she rambled and trailed off. He had since her sincerity in her eyes; her purity in her behavior and her innocence as she talked; she was serene; gorgeous and amazing.
How could she continue to babble when she felt his lips smacking hers? She had not seen that coming; she was so guilty that she had not notice; he had smiled before he started kissing her; his hands circling her waist.
Moments past; bird chirps; rabbits played around; the gentle breeze hit against them; they were still together, glued.
He finally decided to let go. She was red; amazed; happy; excited; everything mixed as a sushi. She did not look up at him; she felt so shy. "I'm sorry...'I did not mean to be rough" he said as he ran his hands in his hair boyishly.
She felt so shy. "How is Thomas?" he asked holding her hand. "He's fine" she said and blushed. "I was worried and furious" he said. She nodded.
"How is school going?" he asked. "Fine" she said as they walked to her home. "Nobody saw us" she suddenly said and stopped. "Geet; I don't think so; we were in the woods". She nodded. They had reached the outskirts of Boston. "I'll go now...'" she said. He handed her arose as he bid her goodbye.
He could not help smiling. He wanted to kiss her for a long time and now he had done it. He was not ashamed.
Since the past one week; Maan was meeting Geet after dropping the lunch of her father at the Rocks. He did not try to kiss her again but they became close.
She did not need to be kissed every time; she liked him and that all mattered. He did not neither; feeling ashamed for the first time he did; she was so frightened.
"So what have you thought of the future?" Geet asked as they sat on the rocks maintaining the distance. "I...'I want to be a lawyer; the family business does not interest me" he confessed smiling at her. She nodded as she munched the chocolates that he had bought for her.
"Will you be here tomorrow?" he asked. Geet thought for a while and answered "I won't be able to; exams at the Convent are starting soon; Father wants me to do my best". He nodded feeling annoyed that he would not see her for some weeks.
It had been a three weeks since the last time he had seen Geet. His exams had started and his pilot tutor wanted him to spend more time to learn more about planes and manage to manoeuvre them at excellence.
It was almost the start of the summer vacations and he had still not seen her.
That afternoon his father spoke at dinner. "I was thinking of organizing a party" he declared. "That's very nice of you Martin" Maan's mother; Dotty replied holding her husband's hand. Maan remained mum; it was the discussion of parties and celebrations he always remained silent and listened attentively to his parents.
"It's been almost ten years since the opening of our enterprise" he announced "and tomorrow makes it a total ten years for all our loyal employees". Dotty nodded as she answered "it's a good decision".
Just then Maan had the brilliant idea. "Dad, since the party is for your employees, don't you think they should bring their whole family...'so that you and mom can come to know them well...'" Martin and Dotty looked at their son with a strange look; he had always avoided these topics.
"I mean; you just said they were loyal to you and the enterprise so why not knowing a little bit about them; many of them has worked for you at the Rocks, or at the mines...'" he added quickly hoping they had not noticed anything strange. Dotty smiled and said "he's right, Martin; it'll establish a good relationship between owner and employee; maybe they'll feel more at ease with us".
"I think we'll invite everyone then" Martin said.
"Tell them to bring their children; their wives and themselves" Maan said and quickly stuffed some food before being asked further questions. If his plan worked; Geet would be at the party of his parents.
"Mr. Mason is throwing a party for the ten years of Rocks" Sander, Geet's father, told her mother than afternoon. "He says he's immensely pleased how dedicated we're to the factory".
"That's nice of him" her mother replied as she changed the shorts of Thomas. "He has invited all of us".
"Good gracious; you're kidding me, Sandy" her mother said horrified. Her father did not reply. By the look he had on his face; the mother knew he was not at all joking. "He wants us to come?" she asked. "Well; that's what I said; he and Mrs. Mason want to meet you and my children...'" Sander replied. Geet smiled as she quietly ate her dinner.
"But we don't have gowns for the party" her mother protested. "It does not matter" her father replied "as long as we go there and give a presence". Her mother was against the idea but the Masons were always nice and educated people.
"I guess we'll manage with our dresses then" her mother said.
"It's the first party I'll be attending" Geet exclaimed as she wore her turquoise dress. "Yes; I want you to do your best behavior of your life there" her mother told her. She nodded. She had a little secret of her own.
They had managed to buy some good gowns at the market that day.
"Why you wanted a blue dress anyway?" her mother asked. "I liked that red one".
Geet answered as she wore her ballerina shoes "I like blue" she said honestly. Her mother did not argue.
"Oh my god; this party is so lavish" her mother exclaimed right in Geet's ear as they entered. "Look; there's Ann Allbright there! Her youngest daughter is the same age of Thomas" her mother shouted, excited. "Geet; stay with your friends around and be good; I'm going to chat with Ann for a while".
Geet smiled and got lost in the crowd as she found herself between some girls of her age; she started to gossip with them.
She went away when she felt that the girls were sneaking too much in other's private life and then it was that moment she saw him. With his black suits looking deadly handsome; his hair combed but still messy, standing against the pillar of his Elizabethan house; he was staring back at her.
She beamed as she saw him.
"Hello" she greeted him as he smiled when she stepped closer to him. "What are you doing?" she asked as he stared back at the crowd.
"Nothing; just checking the chicks" he said and she smirked. "And which one you've choose?" she asked trying to figure which girl he was checking.
He folded his arms across his chest and replied "the one wearing a blue dress". Geet stared back at him; speechless. He laughed at her in his own mad way that made her heart beat faster than the normal rate.
"Why are you hiding behind the pillar" she asked as she scanned the crowd. There was her mother talking with Ann and her father talking with Mr. Albright.
"I'm hiding from mom; she wants to introduce me to everyone" he said making a face. "Oh" she simply said softly. He still had not complimented her on her blue dress.
"I hate crowds; it's always people who pretend they care" he said. She gazed at him. "Maybe not all people care but some do really" she said gently. He was nice to her; always polite but did not attempt to kiss her again and she was okay with that; after all they were only young adults.
"Let's go for a walk" he said suddenly getting on his feet. "At this hour?" she asked surprised. "Yeah" he shrugged. She stared back at her mother who seemed to have a great time then back at her father. It would not be at least for two hours since they would decide to have some food.
"Till we come back in half an hour" Geet said following him.
They walked for about fifteen minutes in silence. Neither of them talked. It was so peaceful to walk away feeling the light summer breeze hitting.
"I'm tired" Geet announced after a while. He did not reply; simply nodded and stopped as she sat down. He lied on the grass staring at the sky. She followed his gesture only keeping a maximum distance between each other. She did not want to lose his friendship.
"The stars...'are so magnificent, they are like diamonds in the sky" she said staring at them. He did not reply but fixed the stars in the black sky. He did not need to answer; for she knew him better. He was a man of less word who liked to joke and laugh at times.
They lied on the grass for a long time than expected when Geet suddenly woke up brushing off dirt from her dress. "We got to go" he said "We've been here for a longer time" and they started to speed away back to his house.
They arrived and luckily it was just then that her mother broke away from the crowd to find her. She could see the smile that lit the face of parents. "We better go home" she told Geet who simply nodded and went to fetch her father.
"Psstt" she heard a voice. It was Maan still hiding behind the pillar. She gave him an odd look but he plainly gave her a small letter.
"Geet, are you coming?" her mother called as she nursed Thomas. Geet stared at Maan for some seconds and ran away to join her parents.
She had changed in her night dress and was about to go to sleep when she remembered the letter. She knew that her parents had already dozed off; so she started to read.
Pretty Blue-dress girl, blue really suits you; forget to mention; forget intentionally to mention how pretty you looked today...'
She blushed reading his comment. His handwriting was neat and clean with ink pen.
7 December
"Geet!" her mother called, panicked. "What happened mother?" Geet asked tired as she sipped her tea. "Turn on the radio, Ann just called to tell me so" her mother said frowning; shocked and frightened. In one night Geet noticed that she became quite friendly with Ann Albright; the wife of her father's best friend. She lazily turned on the radio and sat down on the wooden chair playing with her hair.
"I repeat the war is on" the voice boomed loudly. "Pearl Habour has been bombed by the enemies and U.S has declared war on Japan'."
Everything seemed to crumble; Geet's laziness vanished away; she instantly started to shake. "M-Mom...they have bombed Pearl Habour" she stammered shaking. The news went on further with the number of death and about the war.
Instantly everything was different. All the young men that she had grown up with would be going to the war to fight against Germany, Italy and Japan. All these young person's; fathers; fiancs; husbands would be getting killed...'Fear crept inside of her.
She hugged her mother tightly as she felt cold tears trickling down her cheeks. She was so scared. "Lucky your father is old; he won't be going and Thomas is a baby only...'" her mother said gravely. But her mind went on clicking thinking of her friends' home; their families; the nation's men were in grave danger of becoming extinct. All of them would be fighting against strong and powerful countries. Accountants and Businessmen had become ordinary soldiers in a jiffy. Only girls, women and babies would remain...'everything seemed to finish so quickly.
"Maan was right...'" she thought "we're included in the war...'" and then she was more frightened than ever "he will be at the war too...'"
She felt the great need of seeing him that moment. But she was also scared of getting out of the house.
At night she could not sleep and kept tossing in her bed praying to Christ about life and love of all these numerous people that were going to be a victim in the war. "Their names will always be praised...'" she thought as she felt herself trembling despite the summer.
She heard a little squeaky noise and that made her even more afraid. She glanced at the window and could almost get an heart attack. A black silhouette was standing there. Her mind instantly clicked away 'the enemies' she thought. But the she could see the man knocking at her window softly as he slowly revealed his face with a lantern.
Maan.
She knew it was past two o'clock and her parents were asleep with the tension.
She unlocked the door and went outside. Maan was in black clothes; to appear unseen in the dark. Maan held her hand; she could see him with the lantern.
"Oh god; it's dangerous to go alone at night; you lost your mind" Geet said concern as she held his hand back. "I just wanted to meet you before going" he said in a hoarse voice. Geet's face darkened and tears filled her eyes. He did not need a lantern to see that.
"How's everyone...'?" she asked in a soar voice.
"Everyone's scared even though they won't admit it, Geet...'" he replied. They did not speak; it was the killing and terrifying silence that dwelled around them. "Everything seemed so normal...'till...'" she said and her voice trembled.
"I'll be flying planes" he announced looking away from her shocked face. "You won't do that...'" she asked, it was a statement; an order.
"I know how to fly Geet, me and Gabe will be doing that...'" he said. She could no longer hold her tears back. "It's more dangerous in planes; you know that Maan, they could attack you from sky or land...'it's way too dangerous...'"
"Everyone's lives are in danger...'" he simply said.
She stared at him. Yesterday he was a young boy; killing time; shy and talking, teasing her and right now he was so serious; after all they were talking about life.
"Nobody is sure to return alive...'" he said. "Please don't say that" she begged. "I wish Hitler would use his intelligence a bit...'thousands of girls; women will be widowed; fatherless...'doesn't he have a heart...'" she cried, still holding his arms.
"Life is precious, I'm happy I've did most of the things I wanted" Maan said. Geet stared at him through her tears. She simply gazed at him in her affectionate way. "My father will be there too" he said. She nodded. Everything seemed so serious that nobody could make a joke about it.
"I don't want you to go...'" she wailed. "I've got to...it's my duty...'or else we'll forever live in fear, fear of being attacked; bombed or killed...'all this war and killing has to end, Geet; it simply has to be stopped, so why not today...'" "I knew we were going to get involved; thinking of the other people, who faced the same fear, went through the same thing...'our only aim is to kill the enemies and stay alive".
He was so brave in his own age. She smiled faintly at him after his little speech. "When will you and the others be going?" she asked.
He did not want to say that to her. "Tomorrow". She was shocked but did not say anything. "Everything was going so well...'" she said softly. "For us everything was going so well...'we did not think twice about the other people...'" Maan said. He was brave and self-respected.
She did not know if she would see him again; so she did not want to lose the chance of saying it. "Maan...'" she said gently, she had never mentioned it for she was afraid to lose his friendship ".I...'I love you" she said looking in his eyes "for the past one month; I've been in love with you...'"
That was the thing he feared. He loved her too but he did not want her to wait for him to return when he was somewhere dead in the war. "You've got to move on Geet" he just said. Geet did not know what to do. She was convinced she was in love with him. She just cupped his face and said "I don't want to miss any chance of saying it...'"
"I love you too" Maan replied stroking her hair. "But I don't want you to keep waiting...'we don't know if we're coming back...'" Maan said. "I don't care" Geet replied as he hugged her. He kissed her forehead and for about one hour they talked to each other. "I'll write to mom" Maan announced before leaving. She nodded as he kissed her one last time...'
"You don't need to wait...'" he reminded her before he went.
"I want to wait" she simply replied.
She had liked everything about him; his boyish attitude when he was shy; when he teased her; when he spied on her...' everything was seemed so attractive about him. She knew that she was being drawn by him since the day he had spied on her. He had a mad way of laughing; a bit weird and awkward; yet; she liked everything...'but they both knew; the future was really uncertain...'for his every step was going to put his life in danger...
But they knew one thing for sure?
Who knew if they would ever meet again?
