Part 1
Geet ran from the room sobbing her heart out. "Why Babaji, why?" She ran non-stop until she reached the safety of her own room. She shut the door locking it and slid down the door onto the floor closing her eyes and hugging her knees.
Her sister was the only family she had, apart from Dev and now Maan. She would do anything for her didi, but could she do this? Should she do what didi asked her to do? Did she owe her didi? She had been paying her didi back for something she did, all her life...had the debt not been repaid by now? Would this deed be the final payment? Could she be free from this debt and duty? Will she ever be free?
Her thoughts went back to her early childhood. Both girls were raised by their father, since their mother passed away after giving birth to Geet. Their father was a kind man, who took the decision to raise his daughters himself rather than to re-marry. Naintara was 4 years older than Geet, and Geet worshipped her didi. Geet followed Naintara around like a tail, and Naintara used Geet as a servant. Geet didn't mind, as long as she could be near her didi.
On some level Naintara cared for Geet and maybe even loved her, but her jealousy and insecurity didn't allow her to fully love Geet. At the age of 10, Naintara on found out from a mean and spiteful aunt that their mother had died giving birth to Geet, after which she started blaming Geet for taking her mother away from her. Naintara always referred to their mother, as her mother.
When their father passed away, they went to live with the same spiteful aunt, who managed to play on Naintara's insecurities, making sure that Naintara never fully accepted or loved Geet. If anything went wrong, Naintara expected Geet to fix it. If Naintara got into trouble, Geet was supposed to take the blame. And that is how they grew up. A silent pact between 2 sisters based on blame and debt. Naintara had been wronged by Geet. Geet took her mother away, and she would have to pay and continue to pay. And Geet, knowing no better, and believing her older sister, always agreed.
As they grew up, Naintara was always into the latest fashion, looking pretty and boys, whereas Geet was the opposite and Naintara used that to her advantage. Naintara looked at every female as a potential rival, even her baby sister. She encouraged Geet to study and be bookish, and to avoid boys. She even discouraged her from wearing dresses or figure hugging suits saying that Geet didn't have the figure or look for them. So Geet grew up like a studious tomboy whereas Naintara was the frivolous party girl.
Geet joined college and studied architecture, whereas Naintara partied hard and gave studying a miss. During her partying Naintara met the Khurana brothers. Initially she was attracted to Maan, but he never gave her a second look, which bruised her ego somewhat. However, the younger Khurana, Dev, was smitten by Naintara, so much so, he proposed after their first date. After a very short courtship they married, and both sisters moved into Khurana Mansion. Their aunt discouraged Naintara from taking Geet with her, but Naintara, insisted that Geet move in with them.
On finishing her degree, Geet got an internship in Khurana constructions and had been working alongside Maan ever since.
The last 2 years had been happy ones for Geet. Naintara had been content in her marriage to Dev and therefore, had not needed Geet for anything. Geet thought the debt had been repaid and that Naintara had forgiven her for taking their mother away. But, no. Today was evidence that Naintara had not forgotten...
