As soon as his phone call finished, Maan ordered Geet to arrange for his site visit. He also intended to check out the progress in Hoshiarpur as he would not be able to put his mind at ease if he was here.
"Very well sir, I will arrange for you and Yash sir to leave asap." Geet was about to leave when she heard Maan say:
"Yash? But why would he accompany me?"
"Wouldn't he?" Geet asked back.
"No. I really just want to put my mind at ease. It is enough if I go." Geet nodded.
"Oh, and since you won't be there for the time, tell Adi to divide your work to some of the other employees." This made Geet frown.
"But where am I going?" Maan rolled his eyes.
"You are my secretary Ms Handa. If I am going on such a visit then you will naturally accompany me." Geet nodded and if she was displeased to hear this, it did not show on her face.
Somewhere outside Delhi, a car was speeding away from the big city. Meera sat at the back, deeply in thought about the many issues of her life. She felt worst for Yash. It wasn't that she was unaware of how he really felt for her. She was not stupid. But she would never be able to be his and she could not bear to break this news to him. I was better for both if she did not pay his advances any attention. Now that she was heading back home, she found that it might be easier to forget Yash. It was sad but for the best. She closed her eyes in hope to catch some sleep but as soon as her eyes closed, the car stopped unexpectedly.
Maan had surprised Geet by picking her up in his jeep. Maan explained how he wanted to drive himself and it would be better to use the jeep for the journey.
Not many words were exchanged. Geet mostly looked out of the window, lost in her own thoughts, while Maan concentrated on his driving. He wanted to start a conversation with Geet at a few occasions but she seemed tired and hence Maan let her rest. When they neared Chandigarh, Maan asked Geet if they should put in a stop. Geet agreed and hence they stopped their car on a small road side dhaba. Both went to refresh themselves and ate something. Maan told Geet to return to the jeep till he gets them some fresh and cold water from the stand a little further away.
When Geet reached the jeep, she stopped. An instinct, one that had been her companion for a long time in the past was making her alert. Something was not right. She turned swiftly, her eyes looking around. At the dhaba, a few guests were eating in silence; the dhaba owner was drinking something and counting his money. A few cars and bikes were parked at the road side. Nothing was out of the order. Geet chided herself. She got into the car and put her dupatta over her head. She should not rely so much on her instinct. In the past, it had proven to her that it was not all that reliable. After what she had to go through, she should really not go after her instincts anymore. Maan returned and started the jeep. As he slowly started to drive his jeep, Geet looked past all parked cars and her eyes widened as she saw another pair look straight at her. In the few seconds both their eyes locked, Geet knew that her instinct had not deceived her this time. Oh no, it had warned her and reminded her of those things she had taken the liberty to disregard so far. Fear and pain gripped her heart so much that Geet held her chest with her palms.
"Geet, are you ok?", Maan asked concerned.
"Yes…yes sir. I am ok." But her pale face told Maan otherwise.
Brij Veer Singh visited the site of the bomb blast once again. His instinct told him that there was way more to the picture than he could see. But no matter how often he looked over the entire area, he did not find any clue. To his surprise, though, he met with two unknown faces who were talking to Ashutosh Thakur himself.
"Ah, Mr Singh, let me introduce to you Mr Maan Singh Khurana and his charming secretary Ms Geet." Brij shook hands with Maan and reciprocated Geet's traditional greeting in the same way.
"Mr Singh, is there any chance that the work on the railway tracks can continue soon? A lot is at stake and I am not only talking about money." Brij looked into Maan's concerned face.
"As much as I would like to help you, my hands are bound. If the investigation is completed on this incident and nothing suspicious is found then…" He was cut short by Thakur, who looked annoyed at the inspector.
"When there is nothing to find then there is no point in looking. I told you that the blast happened due to a leak in a pipe. It happens with such old material." Brij nodded simply but did not speak further. His head was lowered and his eyes were set on the ground while his mind was working. Thakur gave Maan a look and they bid farewell to the inspector before heading to Thakur's home.
As Maan and Geet followed Ashutosh, Geet turned to look at the inspector one last time. It was at this instance that something stirred in Brij's mind about Geet. It was as if she would play an important role in the future but in what and when and where he could not tell. It was, after all, just an instinct.
Both still had the evening before returning. Maan's mind was not entirely at rest yet but at least there was no reason for the delay to continue much longer. It would be a matter of few days before the work would start again. He wanted to retire early so that he they could leave early next morning. Geet, however, stayed awake. She had tried to talk Maan into leaving this evening itself but he was too tired. Seeing Maan close the door to his room and switching off his lights, Geet decided to take a stroll. The sun had set quite some time ago. Geet took a lantern with her and walked along the paths. She hadn't decided where she wanted to go when her feet dragged her to a known place. It was an old building, burnt down and in ruins. Taking a few steps closer, Geet kneed down to a spot that was much darker than the others. With hesitation, she touched the tainted soil and with it a flash of memories rushed to her mind. Her heart constricted. "I am so, so sorry." Geet kept mumbling these words till a voice behind her startled her.
"This is a dangerous place for a young girl to be at this time of night." Geet spun around and came face to face with Brij.
"I…I just saw this building." Geet said, admittedly quite lamely. He nodded.
"It burned down many years ago. A few people died that day." Geet gulped, looking away from the inspector who was staring at the building.
"I will return now. I need to leave early tomorrow."
"Let me accompany you." Geet didn't deny and the two walked back.
