PASSION
Maan stiffened as Geet's words hit him in the gut. He forgot everything he was supposed to say and said, with a mocking smile, "Congrats Geet. Shaadi kab hain?"
Geet stared at him as if seeing him for the first time. Ever since the morning, she had been dealing with her own problems, trying to sort out the different unruly feelings and emotions she had within himself. But, Maan's words shattered her ideas and hopes completely.
I was right, she thought ruefully, inhe kuch farq nahin parha…he doesn't care that I might have to get married to someone else. He never felt anything for me…it was probably just lust. Her mind screamed out in sheer pain, as she realized that Maan had seen her as some random girl and had fallen in lust with her. Lust…the word was so demeaning, it shook all her grounds. The grounds of ideals and principles she had been taught since childhood. Her golden rule that she will not let anyone except her husband or someone she loved kiss her. Atleast I got the last part right, she thought dryly.
Suddenly, the position they were in seemed so wrong to Geet. She put out her hands on his chest and gently pushed him trying to get up. He pinned her down more firmly under him and bit out, "Shaadi toh bas tei huwi hain, aur tum aabhi se hi mujhse door jaa rahi ho? Kya karta hain tumhara paati? Sorry, hone wala paati," he didn't know the reason he was behaving so stupid with Geet, but the thought of her belonging to someone else forever was killing every cell inside him.
Geet stared down and felt her eyes fill up involuntarily. She whispered in a low voice, "Mujhe nahin pata."
"Is he handsome? Is he smart? Paise wala hoga haina? Everything you ever wanted, I'm sure?" he continued chanting, without hearing the words himself.
"Maine unhe nahin dekha," she sniffed slightly, as the words left her mouth.
His grip on her waist tightened with every question until she moaned out a little with pain. He was staring deep into her hazels, his eyes spitting fire and fury in ways which could kill anyone. Geet tried to get up again when he pushed her back, almost roughly and held her hands in one of his over her own head.
"Toh mulaqat kab hain?" he sneered, without letting her go.
"Main…mujhe nahin pata.." she whispered, the tears finally tumbling down her cheeks.
"What the hell, Geet? Tumhe toh kuch bhi nahin pata," he screamed out suddenly, causing her to cringe away from him.
"Kyunki, they only called Maa-Baba and told them. Maa-Baba ne bhi mujhe aabhi tak nahin bataya…. They think I don't know..but I heard them talking," she stopped, not being able to speak anymore.
Geet felt the world close in on her suddenly. She didn't know what, but something told her till this very morning, that everything will go right….everything will go her way. But, Maan's words broke every last hope she had. She felt like killing herself that very minute. She even made a thought of trying it out later, when there was no way left. If her parents wanted her to marry someone else, she knew she couldn't hurt them and go against them. On the other hand, she just couldn't marry anyone except Maan. The best way was to kill herself. That way, everyone would be spared the horror. She was starting to consider the thought more seriously, when Maan said, with great pity and scorn, "Then, it's a long wait, haina?"
Geet said nothing and felt Maan lift himself up from her body. He went and stood by the window, as she slowly got up and fixed her dupatta. Without turning around, he murmured, "You're going to say no."
She snapped her eyes up to him, as he suddenly turned around and grabbed her waist. Pulling her closer to him ferociously, he murmured again, this time in her ear, "Do you understand? You're gonna say no. And,don't even think of any kind of a suicide attempt, because I'll come and kill you off myself, samjhi tum?"
She blinked at him, finding herself at a loss for words. His look on her was dangerous, capable of burning her down to the ground, but she knew she had to give her parents a reason for her refusal. He pinned her down against the kitchen counter and spoke in a low voice, saying each word clearly and precisely.
"I came here to ask you something tonight, Geet. And, I want an answer, not your usual mutterings, samjhi tum?" he said, his voice so solemn, that it gave Geet goosebumps.
"Ever since you left, you haven't come to my house again. I want to take you there and keep you there forever," he paused and stared at Geet, who was staring back at him with wide eyes.
He held her right hand tightly in his, while the other arm was still draped tightly around her waist.
"I want to make sure that you cross the threshold of my house with a right that noone can deny you of," he murmured, staring straight into her hazels his words slow and soft and serious, while she continued gaping at him, "I want you to give me an inevitable right over you. I want you to belong to me in every possible senses and I want to belong to you in the same way. I want an unshakable right over your mind, soul and…" he trailed, away as Geet lowered her eyes shyly, knowing his next words, "Over every cell of your body. I want everything of you. Mujhe tum chahiye, Geet, aur hamesha ke liye chahiye."
He paused, as her breath hitched. Babaji, yeh kya keh rahe hain? She thought, her thoughts shaking with sheer anticipation and nervousness, tu jo samajh rahi hain, yeh wohi keh rahe hain Geet…she told herself mentally.
Maan picked up her right hand and kissed it gently, with an open mouth. She gasped, while he looked up into her eyes, still holding the hand close to his heart.
"I want to make sure, that when I hurt you, or….do what I did to you that night," he looked at her hand meaningfully, a look of sadness crossing his eyes forlornly, "Daadima throws ME out of the house, but you don't have to leave again. I want to make sure that you are there every time I wake up in the morning, I leave for office, I come back from the office, or go to sleep at night. I want you to share your life, days and…" he stopped again, this time pulling her closer by her waist, "And nights with me."
Geet blushed, looking away from the searing gaze of his dark irises. He jerked her closer, causing her to look up and whispered, "I want that right which can allow me to hold you, hug you and kiss you in front of everyone, without caring what they think. I want to give you the right which allows you to cook for me, care for me and fulfill every need of mine without thinking about any family or society restrictions. I want to claim you in such a way, that everyone will be scared to even look at you without my permission first."
She felt herself pushed to a wall nearby, and he held her hands up pinning them down under his on the wall. Geet turned a bright red shade of crimson as he moved closer to her and his words rang relentlessly in her ears. He looked into her eyes, scanning them for something she didn't know herself. She saw her own reflection in his eyes, and felt his breath on her face. They were so close, their lips were only a centimetre apart. If she moved a little, she might end up touching his lips with her own, she thought nervously. Yet, Maan made no attempt of moving away. He slipped his fingers between hers and said huskily, "I want you in my life, my house, my room and my bed forever Geet."
She lowered her eyes shyly, as he explained his intentions to her in clear words.
His next words made her snap her head up and stare straight into his eyes.
"I want to marry you Geet. I want to make you my wife. I want to be your husband and the only man in the whole world who's allowed to touch you and belong to you. Kya tum mujhe yeh haq dogi?"
