Recap: Six years have gone by since Geet let Maan for betraying her by marrying his best friend Meera. Now Geet and Maan come face to face after Maan finds himself at Geet's doorstep, after being stranded for hours in a snow storm.

Ch.5- Last chapter

Geet stared wide-eyed at her five year old daughter as she detangled herself from Maan and rushed over to Pari gathering her in her embrace, tearing her child's attention away from Maan and directed it towards herself.

"What's wrong, my Princess?", she cooed as she rubbed her baby's back. She already knew some kind of scary of monster had invaded her child's dreams.

Geet finally glanced back at Maan who was staring at her, looking disorientated, or maybe he thought he was hallucinating by the way he kept rapidly blinking his eyes.

"The scary blue monster came to my room again. And Momma, I got so scared." Geet cradled her baby's face and gently wiped the excess tears away.

"Don't worry Princess, Momma is going to chase the scary monster away."

Pari seemed to have broken out of her fear and sleep because her eyes traveled back to Maan and then turned questioningly to Geet. " Momma, who is this man you were hugging?"

Geet felt tongue-tied, definitely not the right time to make introductions. " Princess, why don't you quickly run to the washroom and pee so your Dora bed sheets don't get wet ? Momma will read an extra story for you." Geet knew Pari could be bribed into doing almost anything with an incentive of an extra story, even though Geet was well aware that her baby would be fast asleep before she finished the first one.

"Okay Momma.", she skipped away with a kiss on her Mom's cheek and a parting glance at the stranger. Pari was still curious about him but thankfully; she was distracted.

"I will back in a few minutes. Will you be okay ?", she asked Maan, who mutedly nodded. He seemed a little dazed, and with good reason. Six years later, they had come face-to-face, and so much changed in the years.

Geet bolted out like a coward before Maan could regain the ability to speak.

**********

Geet was halfway thru The Frog Princess but her daughter's eyes were yet to start drooping and she was aware that Pari was not in the mood to doze off.

"Momma, who is that man in the living room? Is he my daddy ?"

Pari's young words were said so innocently that Geet had to stifle to hold back a cry. She knew her child craved for the love of a father, if only she was able to provide it. They both had Yash but a father could only fulfill the love of a father. Geet patted down her daughter's soft hair soothingly.

"No my love, he is not your Daddy. He was just a stranger who was stuck in the storm. He needs to rest for a little while and then he will leave." Geet found it difficult to believe her own lies. Maan Singh Khurana was once the love for her life, he had been her reason for living, and now she was afraid to admit what he still meant to her heart.

Geet once again started reading in a soft voice that put her child to sleep. Geet waited a few minutes telling herself she was waiting for Pari to fall sound asleep, but in reality she was finding the strength to face Maan and the questions he was bound to have.

**********

She found him standing facing the fireplace, his body illuminated as a shadow with her back against her. She stood still for a moment, lost in the sight of the man she had once loved so passionately. He had shed the pullover off and now only donned the white T-shirt, which hugged his body tightly.

"Maan.", she called out his name softly. His name still rolled of her tongue so easily, as if she said numerous times in one day. He turned to face her but wordlessly sunk down onto the sofa.

"Are you alright? Would like some coffee? You still take it black and bitter, right? Wait, maybe I should check your temperature first. You might be running a fever." Geet ranted off words faster than she could process them. The truth her nerves were so rattled after seeing Maan again, she was unsure of how to be around him.

She crossed the room to place her palm against his forehead; the warmth radiating from him was ever so welcoming. Maan reached up to place his hand on hers. "I am fine Geet", he said and then repeated his words when he saw the doubt in her eyes. Yes, even now Maan read Geet's eyes like an open book. "Really, I am fine. Thank you for saving my life, " Their fingers interlaced on their own accord as Geet lowered herself onto the sofa next to him.

"How did you get stuck in the storm? It had been forecasted days ago. Everyone was told to stay indoors. It's supposed to last thru the night and most of tomorrow. "

"I landed today; I was away on a conference. Actually, I have been living in Toronto for last couple of years; I expanded the family business and opened a branch here. I didn't check the weather report before heading out to check a site nearly by. The storm started off and I tried to head back but then the car broke down. It was so god damn cold without the heater, I decided to try to find shelter, easier than done. After walking for god knows how long, your cottage was the first shelter I found.

Geet stayed quiet for a few seconds before asking a question that had been on her mind since he had woken. "And what about India and your family?" Geet had loved Maan's family; they had always treated Geet like a daughter, especially his Dadima. Geet till this day missed her motherly figure.

Maan sighed softly, "I just couldn't stay in India. It didn't feel like home anymore, no place really does."

Silence descended into the room as moments passed, Maan and Geet both lost themselves in each other's eyes. Maan brought his hand forward to brush the strand that curtained Geet's eyes. Startled at his old habit, she pulled away.

Your hair are always hiding your eyes from me, don't they know how much I love these hazel pools of heaven.

His playful, loving voice still echoed in her ears. Wrapped in the nostalgic past, Geet stood up to shake it off. "I better get you something warm to drink. Coffee and soup sound okay?" She headed towards the kitchen without waiting for a reply.

After she headed out in the living room a few minutes later, she saw him standing near the fireplace once again, this time holding a picture frame in his hand. A picture of Yash, Geet and Pari grinning at the camera when they had been building a snowman together a few weeks ago

As soon as their eyes meant, she read the question loud and clear: Is he your husband? Though he seemed to come to a conclusion that Yash was her husband and Pari was their daughter by the defeated look in his eyes. It saddened and enlightened her at the same time that she could still read Maan's eyes ; the pain in his eyes is ever so evident, it was hard not to notice it.

Ignoring the question simply because she didn't know where to start explaining. "Come Maan, why don't you eat something and then I will check your temperature." She placed the tray containing his meal on the coffee table.

With the picture frame still in his hand, he came and sat on the sofa. "You have a beautiful daughter."

Geet smiled from the heart, "Yes she is, she is my princess."

Maan smiled at her response and by the faraway look in his eyes, he was miles away. Geet knew exactly where he was: in the past, their past.

The Night of Geet's graduation after she had happily accepted his proposal. They had celebrated with dinner and went to the beach for a walk. Maan knew how romantic Geet found walks on the beach with her hand entwined with Maan's , so since it was their night to celebrate before the formal announcement tomorrow Maan had brought her to one of her favourite places.

"Maan", she turned towards him slightly as they walked close to the shore relishing the sound of the waves on the otherwise quiet beach. The cool water lightly skimmed their feet every time a wave rolled.

He smiled in response and waited for her continue but strangely Geet kept her silence, her face adorning into a beautiful blush Maan loved to see on her.

Maan pulled to a stop and stood in front of her, titling her chin up to look at her. "Geet, what were you going to say ?"

"Nothing Maan, forget about it.", She turned to walk away, but only if she were that lucky.

Maan wrapped his arms on her waist from behind and held her in place, settling his chin on her shoulder, "Oh, now I want to know what has my girl blushing all sorts of red."

"Maan", she quietly scolded. "I am not blushing."

"But the warmth of your cheeks tell me otherwise.", he teased as he stroked a finger down her right cheek.

"I won't tell you if make fun of me."

"I am not making fun of you, baby. Rather, I found your blush endearing. And only I want to be the reason of your blush. You can't blame me for wanting to know". He chuckled softly when he saw Geet feeling shy and tried to wiggle out of his arms, but Maan held her gently, but firmly in place. "You know I am willing to stand here like this for the rest of the night, you might as well save us some time."

Geet sighed, knowing he was saying nothing but the truth: the man was just so stubborn. She turned in his arms to face him as he loosely settled his arms around her. "You know, after we get married…"

"After we get married and..", he gently probed her to go on.

"Do you want a baby boy or baby girl first ?", she rattled off the question quickly before she could chicken out again.

Maan looked speechless for a moment or two, surprised at her question before he realized that Geet was feeling apprehensive waiting for his answer. She was serious and his response mattered to her. He would never understand the life she had as an orphan, but did she think acceptance from parents depended on the child's gender.

He cupped her face and looked deep into her eyes, "Sweetheart, I would love our child with all my heart because he or she will be ours, yours and mine."

"But Maan.." Geet's eyes teared up and she trailed off.

Maan wiped her tears away, "I promise, I promise I will love our children no matter what. But you know what, I would really love to have a daughter. A daughter who will be just be like her mother; unbelievably beautiful."

"Really ?", Her eyes lit up as a small smile touched her lips.

"You are the queen of my heart, its only fair Babaji gives me a princess too. She will be my Princess."

"Not just yours, She will be our princess."

"Deal.", And of course, Maan sealed the deal with a kiss that left them both breathless.

"Geet, I am sorry…I..I shouldn't have kissed you like that. Trust me, I had no idea what I was doing. I am sure your husband—"

"Yash is not my husband.", she came out with the truth, unable to see the guilt on his face, it was an expression she was all too familiar with. The look he had on his face the night she walked away from him still haunted till this day. She took the picture from him, "This man is not my husband. He is a very dear friend, almost a brotherly figure."

"But Pari.."

"Pari is my daughter and I am her mother, just not her biological mother and that's the truth. This is the only time I will use the word 'adopted' for my daughter. But she is my, only my daughter." Geet hadn't realized when she had started crying, amidst going back thru the six years. She had faced hardships but they had only made her stronger. Cashing out all her savings, Geet had packed off her bags for an international writing program in Toronto. Once again all alone, Geet had tried to make a new life when she had met Yash Handa in the writing program, He had become a friend, helping her settle in and getting in the groove of things. By the end of her writing program, Geet had written another novel, gained a brother in the name of Yash Handa and had adopted Pari and moved out to the cottage she now occupied. She dedicated her time to writing and her daughter.

She felt Maan reach out for her hands and she let him."Geet, I am so sorry. Because of me, you have denied of some much in life." He used the pads of his fingers to gently wipe away her tears. The gentleness of his touch, but more than that, the pain he was still living with, made Geet lean in to embrace him. She buried her face in his chest and felt his hold tighten on her waist. They soothed each other with their touch. "I am so sorry Geet, more than words will ever be able to explain.", he choked out the words fighting the wave of tears.

"Despite what life had in store for me, I wouldn't change anything. If I hadn't walked away from you then I wouldn't have come to Canada. And if I hadn't come to Canada, then I wouldn't have such a wonderful daughter." She said from the position on his chest, looking up to meet his eyes.

"But I--"

Geet stopped him short by placing her index finger on his lips. "The past is in the past, let's leave it there."

When Geet realized how intimate of a move her finger on his lips was, she removed her finger and started to move away to create some much needed distance between them, when Maan embraced her suddenly, settling his head on the crook of her neck. "Don't let go. Please, just let me hold you for a minute", he pleaded, his hot breath blowing against Geet's skin.

Geet gave in and wrapped her arms around his torso, drawing in his scent: the rare mixture of his cologne and his own scent. She shut her eyes closed and went back in time. The time when Maan and Geet were truly one, the time when Maan was another name for happiness, the time Geet loved Maan more than her life.

They both drew back and Maan cupped her face tenderly. Geet slowly fluttered her eyes open, and that moment she realized: time may have gone by but her love hadn't faded.

"I am still in love with you. I tried not to be, I told myself not to think of you. But today I can't lie to myself; I am still hopelessly in love with you, Maan Singh Khurana."

Maan eyes widened like saucers at her revelation, his expression looked so comical that Geet would have laughed had the situation been not so serious.

"Now would be the time to say something."

"I don't know what to say. You know that I still love you; I told you I would always love you. But I also know that I don't deserve you." The desperation and guilt crossed his face again and Geet wanted to say something, the right kind of words to free him from his gilt ridden lifetime sentence of misery and anguish.

Yes, Maan had made a mistake and they had both suffered, suffered the separation for six long years but now, she yearned to be loved once again by the man she had never stop loving.

"I forgive you.", She held his face in her hands and looked him dead in the eyes, let him read the truth in her eyes. "You made a mistake and you paid for it, we both did. But enough is enough. So I am going to say it again, and hopefully you respond differently. I am still, hopelessly and ever so deeply in love with you."

Maan leaned in to gently seal their lips together, a soft kiss, almost as if it were their first kiss. "I love you too, I ended stopped loving you for a second. The memories of you kept me alive. Thank you for giving my heart a reason to beat again."

We all make mistakes in life, but it usually depends on how we redeem ourselves. Let the redemption always be bigger than the mistake. Geet forgave Maan and gave him another chance and Maan spent the rest of his life proving to Geet and their daughter just how much he loved them, both the queen and the princess of his heart. Destiny may have taken a detour but Maan and Geet were always meant to be, and fate wouldn't have it any other way.

Well..here is the end of That One Mistake😳, I admit I was tempted to make it longer or go for a epilogue as well for Pari-Maan interaction but you all know how pathetic I am with my updating speed. You would get it in the next year.😆

Anyway, for those rare, few silent suffering readers out there, I have a short, like really short ( 2pgs on word) worth of update. I can post it now or hopefully give a longer one later next week. So it's your call.

Let me know how you all liked it.😳

For the last time on That One Mistake: love, love, love
