CHAPTER-23
" Kyun, Geet? Teri problem kya hain? Kab tak akeli rahegi?" Meera shouted in frustration, when Geet looked at her coldly, and said, " Main sirf pichle 2 mahino se akeli hoon, Meera.. I wasn't alone before that.. do you think anyone would accept me after they come to know what has happened with me two months earlier in Mumbai?"
A sharp silence fell across the whole flat, as the two friends looked at each other, one in shock, and the other in painful realization.
" Usse kya fark parta hain? Whatever happened was not your fault, Geet", Meera said, shaking her head confidently.
Geet smiled bitterly, and said, " I always knew that I am going to end up alone, after I faced that night in Mumbai. And, everyone around me also knew it", her face crinkled slightly in pain, as she said, " Lekin, Mk ne aake sab gadbar kar diya.. I can never fall in love with him, and I can never tell him so. Mere saath jo hua, usske baad, mujhe koi bhi nahin accept karega, samjhi tu?"
Meera let out a painful sigh, and spoke in a low voice, choosing her words carefully, " Geet, the only reason someone might not accept you, is because you are crazy. Tu shayed duniya ki pehli ladki hain, who is howling with so much agony after realizing that she is in love. Dekh, tu ekbar Maan ko kehke toh dekh'shayed'"
" Kehke dekhu, matlab?" Geet retorted sharply, " Do you know who Mk is? He is Maan Singh Khurana' the MD of Khurana Constructions. It's his family business, he is powerful, rich' and famous. How will I tell him about the stain in my life? How can he be in a relationship with a girl like me?"
" Tu toh aise bol rahi hain, as if teri koi izzat hi nahin hain," Meera said indignantly, " Tu iss baat ko jitna complicated bana rahi hain, shayed yeh itna complicated hain hi nahin, Geet."
" Tu thi na uss raat wahaan?" Geet replied in a low voice, wiping her tears, as the images of the two month old fateful night flashed ruthlessly in front of her eyes, " Tune dekha nahin? Kitna baara issue huwa tha, all the family, relatives, friends, sab log' mumma papa ko kitni sharmindagi huwi thi' meri wajah se, sirf meri wajah se'"
" Jo kuch bhi hua, ussme tera koi dosh nahin tha, Geet. It was his fault, it was Dev's fault' tune jaan bujhkar kuch bhi nahin kiya tha'" Meera said, firmly.
Geet felt her eyes dampen again, as she heard those words from Meera's mouth. She had heard the same thing from Maan in the car.
" Jo bhi hua, tumne jaanbujhkar toh nahin kiya tha na? You didn't humiliate them on purpose did you?"
Lekin, Geet' unhe kuch bhi pata nahin hain' shayed jab, he comes to know about the whole matter, he will realize that it was your fault'tab kya hoga? " Nahin, Meera.." she said, defiantly, " Main yeh nahin kar sakti'I have to get over it.."
" Yeh koi infatuation ya attraction nahin hain, Geet that you'll get over it' Finally jake, you are feeling something real, something genuine, something magical for someone'" Meera replied angrily, " Tune hamesha yehi soch hain, ke you're strong, tune zindagi mein bohut kuch dekha hain, tu bohut practical hain, you don't believe in all this nonsense'lekin, iss baar, tujhe yeh maan na hi parega' zindagi tujhe khushi de rahi hain, you cannot turn it down' I wont let you." She said, stubbornly.
" Main toh yeh bhi nahin janti, ke Mk mere baaremein kya sochte hain, Meera", Geet said, quietly, putting an end to Meera's claims.
Silence reigned between the two of them, again, as Geet got up, and stood near the window, with her back to Meera.
" It's good, that the project is ending'shayed yehi sab keliye accha hoga.." she trailed off, causing Meera to hiss out sharply.
" Do whatever you want to do, Geet. I don't care." She stormed off Geet's flat angrily, slamming the door behind her, causing things to rattle dangerously.
Geet looked at the door sadly, and lost herself in Meera's words yet again. She stood there, immersed in her thoughts, alone, for what seemed to be ages. Finally, as her strong mind, and love-struck weak mind ended their battle, she nodded her head in determination.
I have to give it more time' she thought strongly, Till I decide what I want to do, I have to control myself around Mk'..
*****
" Hello?" she spoke into the phone, when the voice replied, " Geet, are you wearing pink today?"
Savitri Devi scrutinized her eyes, as she stared at the pink top clad girl some inches away from her in the bakery. She thought it was Geet, but at 70 years of age, one could hardly trust their vision.
" Namaste, Daadima' kaisi hain aap? Bohut dino baad phone kiya", Geet said, as she picked up the bread, and looked around at the packet for the expiration date.
" Bete, can you please tell me, whether you are wearing pink, and where are you?" Savitri Devi ignored all her greetings, and asked eagerly.
" Uuhh'", Geet looked around strangely, and replied, " Yes, I'm wearing pink, and I am at a bakery right now'woh ghar mein bread khatam ho gayaa tha aur'" she felt a slight tap on her shoulders, and turned around to see the smiling and happy face of Savitri Devi.
Before she could put down her phone, the old lady hugged her tightly. She reciprocated immediately, with a warm smile on her face, as she said, " Aap toh ek phone bhi nahin karte aapni Daadima ko'itni busy hain kya?"
" Nahin..woh'baas, office, and everything else," Geet felt a reluctant blush creep to her cheeks, as she thought of how busy she had been since the last two days, realizing her new felt feelings, and avoiding Maan.
" Chaliye, it's almost lunch time, and I want to catch up with you'let's have lunch somewhere.." the woman said, excitedly, linking her hand in Geet's fondly.
Geet opened her mouth to protest, but then, stopped. She was supposed to head over to Khurana Constructions, for a meeting with Maan right now, and though she had avoided every possible encounter with him for the last two days, she had been unable to think of an excuse of putting off this meeting. Even after racking her brains for almost the whole of last night, she had not been able to come up with anything authentic.
Yeh accha hain, Geet'. Daadima ke saath lunch kar leti hoon'I will call him, and say, ke main aapne Daadima ke saath lunch pe aayi hoon, isiliye office nahin aa sakti' Aloud she said, " Hain, sure' main baas office mein phone karke inform kardeti hoon' okay? Lekin, aaj aap mere saath chalengi..I have my car with me.."
" With pleasure", she said, with a laugh.
As Geet and Savitri Devi climbed into the car, she asked, " Kahaan lunch karna hain aapko?"
" There's a restaurant near here, called'"
" Zodiac Bistro" Both exclaimed together, and then burst out laughing.
" Chaliye", Geet said, putting the car in ignition, and plugging the earplugs firmly, " Zodiac Bistro hi chalte hain. Waise bhi, humari pasand bohut milti hain'"
Pasand toh milti hi hain, Geet.. and I couldn't be more glad to know so.. Savitri Devi thought happily, as she saw Geet deftly steer the car out of the bakery, and onto the main road.
As she drove, Geet dialled Adi's number carefully, and waited for him to pick up. As soon, as he, did, she spoke with her earplugs on.
" Adi, woh..main'" she was cut short by the annoyed voice of her colleague, " Kya hua? Aaj bhi office nahin aa rahi ho?"
Geet felt the words die down on her lips, as she felt a pang of shame. She had been calling up Adi for the last two days and putting a halt to all the meetings, and conferences. Usually, it ended up with Maan shouting his head off at Adi.
" Hain, woh, main' I am going out to lunch with someone'baas isiliye' Tum please Mk ko'" She started, when Adi interrupted her again.
" Maan Sir office mein nahin hain'you'll be glad to know ke meeting nahin ho rahi hain off'." Before he could finish, Geet said, in a jolly voice, " Oh! That's great. Meeting cancel ho gayii hain? Thanks Adi, and I got to go now'"
" Lekin, meri'" Geet hung up happily, pleased to know, that she had cleverly dodged the whole program, and the cherry on top was that the meeting itself got cancelled.
" Now, no one can blame me.." she murmured, smiling warmly at Savitri Devi, who sat beside her in the car.
Adi replaced the receiver, and stared at it for some time.
Yeh ladki bhi na'puri baat sune bagair phone rakh diya' usse toh yeh bhi nahin bol paya ke meeting cancel nahin huwi hain' it has been shifted from the office to the restaurant, Zodiac Bistro'
" Table for two'corner please." Geet said, as they walked into the luxurious interior of the Mexican Restaurant.
They followed the waiter to a corner table, and were about to seat themselves, when Geet stiffened hearing the powerful voice boom across the restaurant.
" Daadima!"
Geet stood up immediately, and closed her eyes, trying to make her wild imaginations go away. Geet, tune unhe pichle 2 dino mein nahin dekha, isiliye, your mind is playing tricks with you'forget him, forget about him'woh yahaan nahin hain' yahaan nahin'
" Aap yahaan kya kar rahi hain?"
Her eyes snapped open as she realized that the voice was coming from a very close proximity. She saw him standing in front of her, in his glory, with his hands crossed dynamically over his chest staring at Savitri Devi. Wait, did he just call Savitri Devi Daadima?
Aisa toh nahin ho sakta, ke everyone calls her Daadima' she cannot be the universal Daadima' Her thoughts broke, as Maan's dark irises flickered towards her, and stopped completely.
He stared at her, as if seeing her for the first time in a million years. His gaze softened, holding her eyes captive in his incredible charm. He took in her appearance of a simple tops and jeans, and stared at her face lovingly. She stared back at him, fluttering her eyelashes dangerously, and losing herself completely within the depth and magic of their eyelock.
" Aap yahaan kya kar rahe hain?" The voice jerked both of them back to reality.
Maan tore his gaze off Geet, and glared at Savitri Devi.
" Werent you supposed to take rest? Aur aap ghumne aa gayii?" he said, sneeringly.
" How dare you talk to Daadima like that?"
Maan whipped around, facing Geet with his whole body. She stared at him irritatedly, and said, " Aap mere Daadima se aise baat nahin karsakte, samjhe?"
Maan's gaze wavered from Geet to Savitri Devi and back to Geet again. Savitri Devi stared sheepishly, at the two young people in front of her, and suddenly, had the urge of faking a fall, or maybe, a heart attack. Alas, no one gave her the chance to do that.
Maan glanced at Savitri Devi, and pointed his finger at Geet.
" Usski Daadima? Aap usski Daadima hain?" he said angrily, as the elderly lady started fidgeting and replied, with a watery smile, " Main aap dono ki Daadima hoon'khana kha le?"
" Daadima, aap beech me mat aayiye.. hain.." Geet said, holding her head high up, and putting her hands on her hips, " Yeh meri Daadima hain, aapko koi problem hain?"
" Tum do dino se mujhe avoid kyun kar rahi ho?" Maan asked exasperatedly.
Geet immediately lowered her eyes, and her heartbeat betrayed her, picking up a faster pace yet again. She tried to avert her eyes from his, and whispered, " Avoid nahin kar rahi thi, baas'woh'" He cut her short, and demanded, " Woh kya, Geet? 2 dino se na mera phone utha rahi ho, na office aati ho, na mujhse baat karti ho, aur nahi mere taraf dekhti ho..kya hua hain bolona!"
Savitri Devi heaved a sigh of relief, and settled down on the chair nearby, watching the scene in front of her with immense interest. Geet looked up into his eyes, and slowly shook her head, saying, " Nahin, aisa kuch nahin hain, Mk'"
" Toh kaisa hain, Geet?" he whispered, moving closer to her, and running his hand through his hair in frustration.
Savitri Devi leaned forward with excitement, as Maan reduced the distance with Geet. Both of them apparently, had forgotten about their initial argument, when Geet reminded them again.
" Kaha na kuch nahin.." she said, with an annoyed click, trying to change the topic.
Maan moved back again, and said angrily, " Yeh tumhari Daadima hain, isse mujhe problem hain. Kyunki, yeh meri Daadima hain.."
Geet jerked off her thoughts, and whipped her head up again. " Yeh kya bakwaas hain? Daadima, yeh insaan kya bol rahe hain? Aap iss jaise khadoos insaan ki Daadima kaise ho sakti hain?"
Savitri Devi leaped up to her feet immediately, realizing that her rest period was probably over. She opened her mouth to speak, but her grandson saved her the trouble.
" Tumne mujhe ghatiya insaan kaha? Ghatiya tum!" he said, his eyes blazing fire.
Geet tried to move forward, but somehow, tripped on the carpet, stumbling a little. Maan held her hand immediately, and said, " Sambhalke, Geet'"
She stared at him, losing herself into his eyes and charisma once again. Savitri Devi stared at both of them, feeling a strange sense of satisfaction, and happiness, deep within her heart. Agar mere liye aise hi saari zindagi jhagra karte rahe, toh main toh khushi se hi mar jaungi' kitne acche lagte hain saath mein..Geet is just perfect for my Maan..and in dono ko dekhke toh lagta hain, ke aag barabar lagi hain..I don't have to work too hard. She shook off her thoughts, as the loud voices intervened.
" Ek toh dekhke chalti nahin, phir mujhe avoid karti ho, phir mere Daadima ko aapna kehti ho..Geet Handa, chalo doctor ke paas jaate hain.." Maan said, in a solemn voice, and held her hand tightly, ready to drag her out to some doctor right at that moment.
" Dddeeekkkhiyyeee'" she stammered, trying to control her thrilled heart from bursting out of her ribcage, his touch driving her crazy, " Mmmeeerrraa'.haaathhh cchoriye, warnnaaa mainnn'mainnn baat nahin karsakkktiii'"
Savitri Devi stared at them, fascinated, when Maan bit out, " Kyun? Tumhari zabaan kya tumhare haath mein hain?" He tightened his grip on her hand, and pulled her closer, hauling her on his chest. Savitri Devi almost died with happiness, at seeing the blushing Geet and daring Maan in front of her.
" Nahin Chorunga'aur yeh meri Daadima hain' Daadima" he barked, looking at the elderly lady, and breaking her out of her tempting daydreams, " Batayiyen, issko!"
" Hain, woh'bete, main aapko batane wali thi, lekin'" she stopped guiltily, as Geet stared at her in shock and astonishment.
Maan smirked in victory, and stared at her, holding her hand tightly in his grip. Geet glanced at Savitri Devi strangely, and then said, in a low and formal voice, " Aap Mk ki Daadima hain? You are THE Savitri Devi of the Khurana Family?"
She blinked her eyes, as the elderly lady replied earnestly, " Hain, lekin, that has got nothing to do about your relationship with me..main aapki bhi Daadima hoon, Geet.. nothing will change between us, bete..I promise.."
Geet wriggled her hand out of Maan's grip, who was too surprised to hold onto it. She slowly moved her hair back, and said, in a clear voice, " Ma'aam, I'm sorry, maine aapse pata nahin Mk ke baaremein kya kya kehdiya'"
" Kuch jhoot toh nahin kaha'" she murmured inaudibly, but Maan caught the words extremely clearly. He glared at a flustered Geet and a sheepish Daadima, and sighed loudly.
" Yeh sab mere kismat mein kyun aate hain?" he said, throwing a hopeless look at both the ladies in his life.
Geet stared at him awkwardly, and saw Daadima slap him lightly on his cheek. Maan held his cheek strangely, and glared at her," How dare?", he started saying, when she said, " Chup, bilkul chup, Maan' go back home' hum baad mein aayenge.."
Geet watched, in delight, as Maan clamped his mouth shut immediately, and turned back to leave. He stopped on his way, and turned back, looking straight at Geet.
" Main bhi dekhta hoon, tum mujhe kab tak avoid karti ho, Geet' I will definitely find out what's going on in your mind." He promised himself determinedly.
PRECAP: Aap mujhe bohut pasand hain, Geet' I wish I could take you home and keep you there forever.
