Recap: But the time had come, and Maan broke the one promise he made her. And he knew she would never forgive him and he wouldn't be able to forgive himself.
Ch.6
He had broken the promise he made to his wife but he had no right to keep the family in the dark. He had laid out the truth for the family even since Geet had been on life support
Flashback
"I have been honest with you and but I can't end my own wife's life'I just can't", he said quietly before he broke down.
Rano Mom held him in her arms as he let his tears out. Mohinder Dad came forward to place a hand on his shoulder and Maan looked at him.
"Maan beta, I gave my daughter away to you years ago and I trust you with any decision you make for her.", he said as tears swam in his eyes. Maan couldn't help but hug him, who had been his father in every way even before his own father passed away.
"Thank you'Thank you", Maan whispered unsure if anyone heard him. But then Mohinder patted his head and Maan knew that he had heard his quiet words.
Flashback end
"I miss you baby..i miss you.", he whispered through tears as he lightly caressed her cheek. He placed his head sideways on the bed and wrapped his arm around her even slimmer than before waist as he sat on the stool. This was the closest he could get to her. With a peaceful sigh, he closed his eyes feeling the familiar warmth of her body.
"Maan", a voice whispered. The voice sounded far away, hollow but it also carried sweetness he knew only one voice had. It was his Jalebi's voice. "Maan", she whispered again.
He jolted up into a sitting position to find her sitting awake on the bed looking intently at him. Maan rubbed his eyes with his hands trying to find out if he is hallucinating but her beautiful image remained even after. He started at her dumbfounded as she flashed her famous smile, one that made her eyes twinkle and deepened her dimples.
"Jalebi", he whispered. "Is that you?", he asked unable to believe it.
"Yes, it is. Here, hold my hand and you will know I am real", she said holding out her hand. He slowly made his way to her hand and touched the fingertips lightly. The warmth and softness was there. The reality of her finally sunk in and he gripped her hand tighter.
He couldn't stop the stream of tears that began to stain his cheeks but he wiped them so he could see his Jalebi clearly. Unable to hold himself back, he threw himself at her engulfing her into his arms. The dam finally broke as he let the tears flow freely as he tightened his arms around her waist promising never to let her go. She let her head drop to his strong shoulder holding him as she shed her own tears.
"You have no idea how I spent this year without you. Every second was hell, I couldn't barely breathe without you.", he said as they sat in each other's embrace. Then he suddenly realized that she had still weak and needed to be checked by the doctor.
"Oh my God, how could I forget Geet? You still needed to be checked by the doctor. Are you okay baby?"
"No Maan, I am not okay.", she said sadly as she looked at him.
"Let me get the doctor", Maan said and stood up on a rush but Geet held his wrist. He turned around to look at her with a questioning gaze.
"My heart is in pain Maan", she whispered as she looked down in her lap. "It refuses to believe that my Maan has broken a promise he made to his Misiti", she said as she raised her gaze to look at him. He was shocked to see unshed tears; tears of pain and sorrow.
He rushed to her and cradled her face, "I am sorry Misiti i broke my promise but I couldn't bare the thought of living without you.", he said quietly as he held her hands but couldn't bring himself to look into her eyes. "But now there is no need, you are well now.", he said with a cheer raising his eyes to look at her now hoping to see a smile of approval. But the frown she wore spoke a different story.
"No Maan, you need to carry out the promise because...you are just dreaming. I am in your dream.", she informed him quietly.
"NO", he said in a panic as her image began to dissolve slowly. "No, no Geet, please don't go", he pleaded as he tried to hold onto her.
"Maan, I have to go. Set me free Maan, just let me go", she whispered as she took away her hand from his and vanished.
"GEET", he yelled and he eyes snapped open. Sweat drenched him and his chest was heaving as he struggled to breathe. He realized that it was indeed a dream and she was still lying with closed eyes on the bed hooked to the machines that were doing her body's job.
Maan blinked back the tears as he heard the door open a crack. He saw Pinky peek her head in quietly and Maan smiled as he saw his saali who had been like a younger sister he never said.
"Pinky", he said as he stepped forward to embrace her warmly. "How are you Chukti?", he asked as he called her the name he fondly called her.
"I am good Jijju", she said as they went to sit on the sofa. " I came by a while ago but I didn't want to disturb the two love birds.", she teased and Maan couldn't help but smile at her words.
Pinky Handa was a girl who always smiled during thunderstorm because she looked forward to the rainbow after the storm. Maan knew that she tried to stay cheerful for the sake of Maan and her parents.
"Pinks, can you do me a favour?", he asked struggling with the decision he had made. Pinky nodded at him. "Can you please call Mom and Dad here?", he asked as he looked down at her hands.
"Umm sure, they are on their way here because they knew you would be here.", Pinky said and Maan only nodded before he walked to the window. He stared at the rain droplets hitting the window softly.
"Are you okay Jijju ?", Pinky asked as she placed a hand on his shoulder. Maan turned around and answered with the unshed tears in his eyes.
"I want to talk to them about the promise I made to Geet.", he said and Pinky gasped as she understood the meaning of his words.
**********
"Is everything okay Maan beta?", Mohinder asked as they were all seated in Geet's room.
Maan took a deep breath to calm his hammering heart but it was no use. He looked across the table to the people who were his family in every way; his dad, mom and sister.
"Dad, there is something'.something I need to talk to you all about.", Maan said with hesitation. Both Rano and Mohinder nodded for him to continue. Only Pinky had a saddened glum expression on her face because she knew what was coming.
"Go on son, what is it?", Mohinder asked with a gentle voice.
"I need to fulfill'", Maan stopped as his felt tongue-tied unable to utter the words that could possibly end not just one but two lives.
"Say something beta, what is it? ", Rano said as she reached over to hold his hand.
"I need to fulfill the promise i gave Geet", he said quickly and closed his eyes so he wouldn't have to see the expressions of sorrow of his family. Rano gasped at his words and slowly released the hold on his hand.
Maan opened his eyes to see unshed tears in Mohinder's eyes as Pinky and Rano let their tears flow freely.
"Please let me explain", Maan pleaded. "I can't live with the guilt that I didn't carry out my wife's wishes--"
"SO YOU ARE GOING TO GO AHEAD AND END MY DAUGHTER'S LIFE, JUST SO YOU CAN LIVE IN PEACE.", Rano yelled through her tears as she jumped to her feet.(this is probably what all my readers are thinking so I voiced your anger using Rano )
"Please Mom, let me explain", Maan pleaded but Rano paid no heed as she ran out the door and Pinky followed but not before she threw Maan an apologetic glance.
"Let her be Maan, she needs time to accept this decision", Mohinder consoled as he gently sat him down again.
"I am sorry Dad, I am so sorry", Maan whispered as tears fell out of his eyes.
"No son, don't be sorry.", Mohinder said and embraced him as they quietly comforted each other.
Mohinder drew back a few moments later and looked at him with love. He wiped off Maan's tears. "I meant what I said to you when you told me the promise. I trusted you with my daughter when I gave her away on her wedding. I will always support you with any decision you make. I promise son.", he said.
"Thank you Dad", was all Maan could utter as emotions choked him and he hugged him to seek comfort. Maan knew he was ending his life along with Geet's, he couldn't live without her because of the simple fact that he didn't know how to.
**********
One week later
"Are you want to do this Mr.Khurana?", Dr. Collins asked with sympathy. Maan looked to his left where his Dad nodded and then to his right where his Mom who had eventually understood Maan's reasons, held his hand and gave him a sad smile. Pinky placed her hand on his shoulder to express her support and Maan knew he could do this if he had his family by his side.
"Yes doctor, I am sure", he had after he swallowed the lump in his throat. "I want to pull the plug on Geet's machines.", he said quietly with tears in his eyes. Both Mohinder and Rano held his hand to comfort and support him.
"Okay Mr. Khurana, I will get the paperwork for you.", he said as he got up. "Hang in there, I know how hard this must be for you.", he consoled as he put his hand on Maan's shoulder.
Maan only nodded at him unable to utter a word.
**********
It was time to bid Geet Singh Khurana farewell. The family gathered around her bed with tears in their eyes but a greater pain in their hearts. Mohinder held his wife in his embrace as she cried. Maan and Pinky held each other's hand tightly hoping they would pass strength through the touch.
Pinky stepped up first knowing somebody had to make a move. She held her sister's hand lightly.
"Didi. We have always been more than just sisters; we were, no..we are still best friends. You are my best friend who helped me with everything and anything. And now you are going away and leaving us but remember you are the best sister a girl can ever have. I will always love you. Thank you for being you.", Pinky said quietly before she bent down to kiss her sister's cheek. Maan walked up to hold her shoulders from behind and she turned around to bury herself in his chest as she cried.
Then Mohinder and Rano stepped forward to say their goodbye to their daughter. "Geet my baby, you were the most beautiful child a mother could ask for. I remember when you came into this world and the doctor placed you in my arms. I had vowed to myself that I would always protect my baby from this world. But now'..", she broke off as tears choke her. Mohinder ran soothing rubs along her back. "But now my baby is going away leaving her mommy behind. I know this is what you wanted and Maan is carrying out your wishes", she said with a sad smile and looked in her son's direction. Maan gave her a faint smile back. "Bye baby, Mommy and Daddy love you", she said and bent down to plant a kiss on her forehead.
"We love you Geet but it's time to let you go. Always remember, we love you", Mohinder said. He was a man of few words but that day he eyes said it all. He gave his daughter one final kiss on her forehead.
"Can I please spend some time alone with Geet?", Maan asked quietly.
"Of course beta", Rano said with a gentle pat to his cheek. Everyone filed out leaving Maan and Geet. Maan knew it was time to say goodbye but he just didn't know how. He went to side by her bed and picked up her delicate hand to lace their fingers together to hold it tight. His hand would only fit with hers just like their souls.
"I am sorry that I didn't carry out your wishes earlier but I hope you can forgive me and understand my reasons.", he said and then fell silent not knowing what to say.
He kept rubbing a thumb over their locked hands as he tried to memorize every feature not that he needed to. He could see her angelic face as soon he closed his eyes.
"This is probably the last chance I have to talk to you but I don't know what to say. I don't know what a person says when they are killing themselves. But I know that I won't be able to live without you; I just don't know how to.", he said and broke down letting the tears run freely as he laid his head on her stomach silently praying that she would lightly run her fingers through his hair like she used to.
"Please baby'.please'wake up..please wake up.", he whispered between sobs. He hugged her close as he wrapped his arm around her waist. "Please, I beg you'wake up for your Maan.", he pleaded.
**********
"Are you ready Mr.Khurana?", Dr.Collins asked as they were seated in his office. Maan fought the tears that began to sting his already swollen eyes as he tried to keep himself strong.
"Yes Doctor, I am ready", he managed to say.
"Okay then, here are the papers that state that it is solely your decision to take remove your wife from life support and that you have done it being in full consciousness. Take your time to read through them and then sign.", Dr.Collins said as he pushed the papers to Maan's end of the table.
Maan heard every word but couldn't bring himself to acknowledge his words as he stared at the papers. Their death contract; a signature that would end two lives.
"Take all the time you need Mr.Khurana. We are ready whenever you are.", Dr.Collins said and stepped out to give Maan privacy.
**********
The doctor explained that they would stop her ventilator, which meant no oxygen for her body. If there were no oxygen circulating through her organ especially her heart then she would die.
The family surrounded the bed and held onto Geet hands; Rano and Mohinder on one side and Maan and Pinky on the other. The doctor asked one final time if everyone was ready and if they truly wanted this. All they could do was nod.
Dr.Collins turned off the respirator; her feeding tube and other machines and suddenly the room was too silent without the hums of the machines. Maan stared at Geet's face, as she died a slow death. A few moments later, only one sound could be heard: the flat lining of Geet's heart.
"I am sorry", Dr.Collins said sadly.
**********
New ending starts here...
Maan closed his eyes and let his tears flow down to his cheeks not bothering to wipe them. The tears spoke of his pain and sorrow that he would carry forever in his heart.
Suddenly, the screen of the heart monitor jumped to life with a sound and lines began to appear. Maan opened his eyes with a startle and stared at the heart monitor, which had jumped back to life.
"Doctor, we have a pulse, weak but it's there !", the nurse exclaimed. Everyone looked up startled and confused.
"Nurse, clear everyone out. Page Dr.Mattews for me", Dr.Collins ordered as he gently tried moved the family out of the way to check on Geet.
"No, I am not leaving my Geet behind", Maan yelled as he gripped her hand.
"Mr.Khurana, you need to leave now if you want your wife to have any chance at survival. Leave now", Dr. Collins ordered. Geet's health in question immediately quieted him down.
He had no choice but to follow the rest of the family out. He stood without the room with his face against the circular glass window as doctors surrounded his wife. But after what seemed like ages, he smiled from the heart with a new ray of hope.
**********
Maan paced outside the hospital room from one end to the other, waiting, and waiting for the doctor to come with news. After what seem liked hours, Dr. Collins and Dr.Mattews came out. He rushed to them.
"Doctor, how is my Geet?", he asked with worry.
"Things are looking good Mr.Khurana, her vitals are improving. And the most thing is that she is functioning on her own.", Dr.Collins said.
Everyone breathed a sigh of relief and Maan fought the urge to hug the doctor tight to express his gratitude.
"Thank you so much, I don't have the words to thank you"
"Your welcome Mr.Khurana. We will be keeping Geet under observation for a few days and see how things go."
"Can we see Geet?", Rano asked.
"You can see her but she is under strong sedatives right now as her body needs a lot of rest."
"Thank you Doctor", Mohinder said giving him a handshake.
"Your welcome, I will be back to check on her later", saying that the doctors left.
The happiness of the family knew no bounds, they hugged each other celebrated the joy of having Geet back in their life.
**********
Maan waited patiently as the family went in to see Geet, as he wanted to see her alone. She was still on sedatives but just knowing the fact that she was going to be aright made him smile all day long. He walked to the window and smiled as the sun rays touched his face; even Mother Nature was rejoicing at their miracle.
Just then, Rano touched his shoulder and he turned around to give her a warm smile.
"I am sorry beta", she said with tearful eyes. "I shouldn't have yelled at you, it's just that I grew selfish at the thought of losing my precious daughter."
Maan held her hands, "No Mom, please don't apologize, I can understand". She nodded at him and hugged him close.
"Maan beta, why don't you go to see Geet?", Mohinder said as he came out of the room. Maan nodded but suddenly he was afraid but he didn't know why.
He took a deep breath of calm himself as he opened the door to step into the dimmed room. He stopped at the side of her bed and took in her sight. A smile automatically came to his lips as he grazed at the love of his life. His heart glowed with happiness as her chest lightly rose up and down with her even breathing. He sat next to her and picked up her delicate hand to place a slow kiss on it.
He let his eyes drink in her sight. Not being to hold myself in, he bent his face down to brush their lips together ever to so lightly. The feel of her soft lips made him smile. Just then, he felt his wrist being touched. He looked down to see her fingers trying to hold his wrist; her touch was feather like making his skin tingle.
"Geet", he whispered to her but her eyes remained close. "Geet"
Just then, her eyelids fluttered opened ever so slowly. He face broke into a grin and tears begin to swim in his eyes. He placed his hand against her cheek to cradle her face and placed a warm kiss on her forehead.
"Missed me ?", she asked quietly with a smile.
He couldn't stop the tears that began to roll down his cheeks. She raised her hand slightly to wipe them off. The difference was that they were tears of happiness He could finally start believing in happiness again: His Jalebi was going to be all right. He could start breathing again.
And that day two lives were given another chance, Geet and her Maan..
