OH MY GOOD GOD ABOVE
I thought for a long time about whether I could write my take on today's episode-- it was such a dhamaka to the system that even now, I'm not sure I've absorbed it enough to be able to write coherently about it.
I would like to say that I think that today is only the first part of a multipart episode-- I think when we look back, months from now, we won't be able to watch today's episode without tomorrows-- there are so many points that remain unresolved, and as of this moment, it is my hope that the CVs will answer all the remaining questions tomorrow -- but more on that later
I warn everyone, today's take is likely to be even longer than my norm-- prepare yourselves
The first moments, with Maan searching for the truth, and Geet determined to have a few last moments of happiness-- it seems the scene is set for tragedy from the first moment.
Maan for one moment is captivated by her beauty, he turns to see her, and behold a vision embodying his every dream, and GC is maahir at showing overwhelming love in one facial expression-- kudos
DD looked amazing, and her expressions as she came out from behind the curtains were divine-- a mixture of sharm, laaj and boldness- I think it is clearer than ever that she was planning to offer herself to Maan tonight (the dialogues at the end of the last episode also clued us in to that)-- is it any wonder that she feels trepidation, that she feels fear, even though she knows that her love for Maan deserves expression. Somewhere in her heart, she may fear that Maan will misunderstand her boldness- after all, though she believes his expressions of love, even then she may well remember the way she was always treated by her family- it is likely that any expression of love was considered paap-- and it is unlikely that she ever saw a display of honest emotion before Maan entered her life
DD portrayed that moment perfectly-- she sees Maan, and then we have the most obviously romantic moment of the episode-- she sees them together, protecting the light, the light that signifies their love-- she sees their joint hands stopping the wind from blowing out the light, which to me says that she knows that their love can weather all storms, all aandhi-toofaan. I think at that moment she decides that after tonight she will tell him everything. She shows that she is the one willing to take the next step, by grasping Maan's hand and guiding it to her cheek-- this tells me that she will encourage him to show his love for her and that she will always let him know how important he is to her. It also shows that perhaps she will be willing to accept him being the one to dish out punishment on her behalf-- she considers him to be the other part of her, the other body to her soul, her humsafar-- she also shows that his needs and wants are paramount to her, so if he needs her to bury her need for revenge--she will do that too
But then, then she realises that this was all a dream, and that Maan didn't actually come forward to protect the light with her-- and that reawakens her doubts-- hence her slightly hesitant facial expression as she walks towards maan. She embarrassed to be found fantasising about him, but she's still in romance mode-- she notices his facial expression, but misinterprets it as passion-- similar to the way Maan didn't recognise her distress when he was overwhelmed by love on the night of their engagement, today geet is the one carried away by passion-- for once unable to recognise Maan's mood, unable to read his face.
she goes to him, and touches him, shows him what she feels-- and then the real drama starts
Maan phrases the question so beautifully-- and May I give a shout out to Barry Dhillon for his well written dialogue-- not a word wasted, not one extraneous word or line-- today's episode was a master class in how to write a climactic episode like this.
Maan asks-- you come so close to me on one hand and on the other you're trying to leave me, and woh bhi bina batay-- yh kaise ho sakta hai. You touch me, your touch enchants me, and yet you're trying to leave me-- I think the moment he decided to question her was when she hid her eyes from him-- he couldn't read her, and so when she turns away, he pulls her back and starts questioning her-- exposing his confusion, exposing his inner fears that she is leaving him; it must have seemed that she was planning a romantic goodbye-- love him, romance him, leave him with good memories and then walk away, walk to yash.
Poor Geet, has to deal with two things-- first that her romantic evening is not going to go to plan, and second that she is going to have to break her beloved's heart before she has fully worked out the best way to minimise the damage-- what a position to find herself in. she can't handle it, so she tries to turn away, to take a moment to collect her thoughts, to phrase her answers in the least hurtful way-- her deepest hurts are about to be exposed, and she fears hurting the only person she cares about
Oh Maan-- he reveals his deepest insecurities again-- remember the first sari night-- when he says to her that she doesn't consider him worthy of her
Tonight Maan reveals his inner fears again-- despite everything, despite the fact that in the eyes of the world SHE's the one that's damaged goods-- he shows that he still has her up on a pedestal, that he still considers her far too good for him, that he still feels that he has to strive to be worthy of her-- he asks her "mujhpe yaqeen nahin tha? didn't you think me worthy to hear your inner thoughts"-- how low is this man's self esteem, when it comes to Geet-- he really doesn't think he can live up to her pavitrata, her saadgi, he considers himself lucky to have her in his life
At that moment, Geet speaks, and I think asks herself what she should say-- her inner turmoil makes it way out of her lips "kya boloon"--- we see the questions she's asking herself-- should she tell him, should she ruin their happiness, or she should bury everything related to her past deep inside herself
But maan doesn't allow her to prevaricate-- he does what she fears the most- he seems to be stepping back from her-- you can see the realisation in DD's expressions of how tormented and empty her life will be without Maan-- her face shows desolation-- and then he shows her that he can truly read her, and he knows that her eyes will tell him everything
and at that moment, with his next words (tumhein HUMARE rishte ki gehraee par vishwas nahin hai) with those words she realises how much she has already hurt him-- that her attempts to protect him have actually caused him pain, and that now he has begun to doubt his importance in her life-- he exposes himself with this dialogue, telling her how much he needs her to trust in him, trust in his love-- for a man like MSK to need to be reassured that he is believed-- that's a powerful statement-- men like MSK normally EXPECT to be believed.
GC at that moment looks so desolate that it's no wonder Geet wanted to reassure Maan-- even I wanted to give him a big hug and say- it's okay babe, Geet really DOES love you.
And then Maan presses his point, sensing her weakening, sensing that his one hope is to remind her how he has accepted everything she has thrown at him so far, and hope that she will understand that he can take whatever else that she can throw at him-- I'm sure he's thinking that nothing could be worse than learning that the woman you love is pregnant with another man's child-- he needs to break down every last barrier between them and to do that he reminds her that even when he turned away from her, he couldn't STAY away, he did accept her with everything; I think he also wants to convey that he's learned a lesson-- the last time she told him a truth about herself, he misunderstood and briefly turned away-- the reason he brings that up now is to show her that he's learnt from his mistake and never again will he turn from her, as he trusts that she is always right and true, and that everything she tells him is utter sach. He's demonstrating the depth of his love in those simple words.
She hesitates again, because whilst she doesn't doubt the depth of his love, she knows that philos and agape will be warring within Maan's breast-- his love for his baby brother, which he stated so clearly to Geet on the engagement night will war with his soul deep connection with Geet-- and Geet wants to protect him from even the smallest of hurts, and yet knows that even that desire to protect him is in itself hurting him
And then Maan adds coal to the fires burning Geet-- he takes the blame for her hesitation onto his own head-- he opens up about the guilt that he feels for having left her exposed to the cruel world even if only for 2 days without him== she can't take it (and neither could I, I was in tears when he said he was to blame)
She embraces him, and seeks protection from him, and clasps him to herself to absorb perhaps the last moments of physical closeness to him-- and Maan senses her submission to his needs-- GC's expression changes as dd goes into his arms-- showing once again that he is a master of facial acting
and them the most romantic dialogues of this episode== I've seen people say they wanted more intimacy in this episode-- what more could you ask for than Maan's declaration "Ab mein aagaya hoon, ab tumhare saat hoon, batao mujhe, kya tumhe mujh pe bharosa nahin hai"
And in that moment of truth between them, a moment of quiet acceptance-- Geet tells the truth. She knows his happiness is linked to her-- and he tells her again-- and proves that MSK is the dream man-- "Geet don't you know that my happiness is from you" and reminds her that she promised to be there for him forever
He takes her hands as she continues to try and warn him-- and then promises again to be there for her forever-- he's promised it before-- multiple times but this time had the gravity of a VOW.
with the weight of his vow gibing his questions strength-- he asks her again; now with Haq, now almost demanding that she reciprocate his openness, reciprocate the depths of his love
I think the CVs put Devtara in here because they understood that we needed to breathe-- and to show a contrast-- on one hand we have Maaneet for whom truth and openness is so important that despite the risks Geet is going to tell the truth to Maan and between whom there is already such openness that NT can't even imagine how much Maan already knows- on the other we have a couple who can't even imagine truth between them, and who define "unhappily married"
Dev for once took the right path-- and the CVs also answered our possible questions about how Dev knew where Maaneet were with Dev's thought (I think the CVs have read our cribbing so many times that they are now trying to weed out as many bloopers as possible-- I can just imagine that if they hadn't put that line in about reading Geet's letter, we would all have been cribbing about how Dev knew where Maaneet were. As it is I am just a bit upset that Maan's first love letter from Geet was read by the man who betrayed her-- what an invasion of privacy)
It was interesting to see Dev's body language as he pulled NT towards the terrace-- almost phera type walk-- holding her hand, with her walking just behind him-- interesting direction from the second Maan Singh)
Break over, back to the scene of true drama- Maan senses that something is going to come out that he doesn't really want to hear, and yet is compelled to continue== his voice is starting to shake as he fears the coming revelation-- but even now he can't quite understand what he is sensing
GC's ultimate moment comes when you watch his facial expressions as Geet details what "that man" did to her-- showed her dreams of a life abroad, stole her money, her land, her izzat; the pain he feels for her suffering is writ large on his face; his desire to turn back time and protect her from hurt, perhaps even his memories of the way he treated her then, of the harsh words he said to her-- that pain is displayed in front of Geet.
She says it all, to remind him what she went through, to tell him in advance that any name she takes will not be just plucked out of the air, to remind him that the man she is about to name is guilty of the most heinous of crimes. She knows that his initial reaction will be utter denial-- of course it will-- she just wants to ensure that he remembers exactly what the crimes are of which the named is guilty; that no matter who he is, he deserves the most harsh punishment.
And then- then with determination on her face-- she reminds him that she has already told him the name of her betrayer
And kudos to the CVs== they proved that MSK is not a fool- he doesn't need it spelled out for him, he can connect the dots
His hands fall away, and he falls back-- he has received a gut punch, his mind is reeling. GC's face is perfect-- blank incomprehension turning to horror and denial and then entreaty-- he looks down, thinking, putting all the evidence together.
and then he reacts, as anyone would-- with denial. How do you expect a man to believe that his baby brother, who he loves, who he believes has a good heart-- how can any man believe that he would commit such a heinous crime --he grasps Geet, begging her to take back the words that have destroyed his faith in his brother, begging her to tell him that his parwarish cannot have produced a man who is so girahuwa, begging her to tell him that he is not the cause of all this pain (can we doubt that he has immediately realised that Dev did this all for the money that Maan denied him to pay off his debts--Maan must immediately realise the role he has played by inadvertently creating Dev's need for money-- he inadvertently caused Geet's downfall)
He begs her because she is the only truth in his world
and in that moment- Dev arrives to redeem himself- and Maan's life is shattered anew. He can't take any more blows, he is living a nightmare, and then Dev confirms what he did
Maan can't believe that this is happening; he douses the candle with his hand in the hope that the pain of the burn will wake him from this nightmare-- but he remains where he is, trapped in the knowledge that his ardhangini was despoiled by his brother. He has reached the limit of his endurance-- he is after all only human. He turns to walk away, a lion mortally wounded, trying to find a place where he can lick his wounds and try and rebuild his shattered psyche and return whole to protect the love of his life, so that he doesn't break in front of the brother who betrayed him ,so that Geet is not put in the position of having to tend to him when he feels he should be tending to her. I fully believe that Geet understands why he is walking away- she's dealt with her pain, and now all her pain is for what Dev in inflicting on Maan
But he is stopped by Dev-- who needs to atone for his sins, and doesn't see that he is adding to them by forcing Maan to listen to him at that moment.
Maan can't take it, and responds the only way he knows how-- no words are enough to express his feelings in that moment-- a physical outlet is the only way to vent the pain and hatred and hurt inside him
so he slaps/punches DEV- and we're left to wonder what next
I can't wait for the conclusion of today's episode-- if only it was less than 17 hours away!!!!!!!!!!
