Maan stood shell shocked. Seriously, what were these ladies saying? Geet, married – IMPOSSIBLE! No way was she married. She didn't wear anything that showed she was married – no mangalsutra, no sindoor, no bangles. Sure, now days many women didn't wear the traditional things, but they wore wedding bands. Geet didn't even have that. But, Geet was a traditional girl, Maan was sure that if she were married, she proudly wear everything associated with being a married woman.
Just the thought of Geet being married to another man, it made his blood boil. The thought of Geet being a Mrs. Geet Something-Or-Other, instead of Mrs. Geet Maan Singh Khunrana, it enraged him. That thought alone, that he saw Geet as being his and only his on that level, shocked him. As he stood listening to the ladies talk, his shock quotient and rage grew.
"Haan, uski shaadi…uski barbadi thi," one of the ladies said.
"Kya matlab?" the girl asked.
"Uski shaadi ki baath jaab utti, taab Geet ek school jaati hui ladki thi. Humesha se woh kehti thi ke usse aapni padhai khatam karni hai take woh aapne parviaar ko dikha sake the ladkiyaan, ladkoon se kaam nahin hai," the lady said.
Maan couldn't help the small grin that came to his face. That sounded like Geet.
"Magar achanak, ek rishta aaya uske liyeh," another lady said. "Bohot hi aacha rishta tha. Aaisa rishta joh haar koi aapni beti ke liyeh chahega."
"Ladka NRI tha," another lady piped in. "Canada se. Aapne Maa, Bhabi aur behen ke saat Geet ko dekhne aaya tha. Ek hi mulaquat mein ussne shaadi ke liyeh haan kar diya tha. Geet ko pehle rishte se inkar tha. Lekin jaab usne dekha ke, uske parivaar ke kushi uski shaadi se thi, woh maan gayi."
"Aapni parivaar ki kushi aur izzat ke liyeh, Geet kuch bhi kaar sakti thi," the third lady said.
"Ladke ko achanak Canada vapas jaana tha, business ke kuch kaam ke liyeh. Woh Geet ko chodke nahin jaana chate the aur Darji bhi intezaar nahin karna chate the, issi liyeh teen din ke andar karvadi dono ki."
Three days?! Three freaking days!? It took Maan longer to decide what projects to pursue for his company! They'd decided to get Geet married to some guy who they barely knew, all because the man was Canadian.
"Phir?" the girls asked.
"Phir…phir toh Geet ki zindagi mein asoon hi asoon the. Shaadi ke dusri din, unn saab ko Canada vapas jaana tha. Airport mein, paata nahin kaise, woh Geet se bichad gaye. Baad mein pata chala ke uske paati ke naam se koi admi tha hi nahin flight pe. Police ko laga ke Geet kuch fraud ya aaisa kuch mein shamil hai issi liyeh usse gireftar kar liya tha. Doh din jail main rehne ke baad Darji aur Brij gaye the usse chudvane," the lady finished.
Maan wanted to beat something! How dare anyone think about doing such a thing to Geet? Leaving her stranded at the airport, causing her to go to jail – JAIL! Just the thought of Geet trapped in a jail cell with real criminals made his skin crawl.
"Magar usske paati ne aaisa kyun kiya?" the girl asked.
"Geet ke naam kuch zameen the. Uss zameen ko paane ke liyeh kya. Jaise hi shaadi ke baad zameen uske naam hogaya, ussne Geet ko chod diya," the older lady explained.
Maan instantly remembered how Geet had insisted on finding out who sold the property to him. How she'd insisted on meeting this person that he bought the land from. He remembered how hurt she'd looked when he'd first met her regarding the property matter. Back then, the pain hadn't registered at all because back then, he had no intention of being part of Geet's life or having her be part of his. But now, now as he remembered her face, his heart broke. What killed him eve more is how rude he'd been to her then. He was adding salt to her fresh wounds. He cursed himself for what he'd done.
"Tauba," the girl said. "Kuch zameen ke liyeh aaisa koi karta hai bhala?"
"Yeh toh baas shuruwad. Geet ki gham ki kahani toh shaadi se baas shuru hota hai," one of the ladies said.
Maan closed his eyes. He didn't know if could handle any more.
"Aur bhi hai?" the girls asked.
"Haan. Baad mein paata chala ke woh shaadi, woh pundit saab jhoota tha.. Lekin Geet ko paata nahin tha issi liyeh shaadi ke baad, ussne wohi kiya joh har ladki karti hai. Aapne aapko ussne aapne paati ko deh diya. Tan aur man se, woh aapne paati ke samne samirpit hogayi," the lady said.
Clearly, this was information that Maan could have done with out. He didn't know or like how jealous he felt at the moment. Marriage comes with certain expectations, Geet had only fulfilled her duties as a wife. But why, why did it make him want to jump off a bridge at the thought of some scum bag having his hands all over Geet's body. Why did it want to make him vomit at the thought of some other man kissing her, touching her – pleasing her? Why?
"Kuch haftoon baad pata chala ke jaate jaate uske paati ne uske paas aapni nishani chodke gaya tha," the lady said.
Maan's eyes opened in shock. No, it couldn't be, it just couldn't be.
"Matlab ke……" the girl said in a hushed tone.
"Matlab ke Geet uske bache ki Maa banne wali thi," a lady said.
"Hey Bhagwan," the girl said, her voice laced with shock and sorrow.
"Aur aab, kya woh abhi bhi pet se hai?" one of the other ladies asked.
"Haan, hai toh. Uske parivaar chate the ke woh bacha ko gira de, lekin Geet nahin maani. Uska kehna tha iss saab mein, uss masoom ki kya ghalti thi. Taab, woh pagal Brij hai naa, ussne Geet ko jaan se marne ki koshish kiya tha. Woh kamyab nahin ho paya. Sune ko mila the ke koi aaya tha Geet ko bachane," the older lady answered.
Now it all made sense, how Maan knew why her brother had been after her to kill her. She'd refused to kill her baby, so his solution was to kill her.
After a moments silence, the lady spoke again.
"Joh bhi ho, Bhagwan usse shakti deh ke woh iss behrehem duniya se lad sake. Bhagwan usse aapni kushiyaan lauta de. Aur Bhagwan uss admi ko aur usske parivaar ko saza deh. Ek masoom ki zindagi barbad karne ka saza toh unn saab ko milni chahiyeh," the lady said.
A moment later, they walked off.
Maan stood rooted in his spot. Before he could think about anything, Munshi-ji came with his two lawyers. They dragged him off and began discussing the project, the case everything. Maan's concentration was only half present. Somehow that day had passed, how Maan didn't know. It had all been a blur.
At night, he sat on the sofa thinking about the revelations he'd stumbled onto. Geet, she'd been married. Yes it was a fake marriage, but as far as she'd knows back then, it had been real for her. Like any other wife, she did what anyone in her position would have done. She'd surrendered herself to the man who she thought was going to be her life partner, the man who she thought she could trust. How was she to know that he'd betray her, take her property and leave? How was she supposed do know that she'd be paying the consequences long after he'd left?
Geet was pregnant. She was pregnant with another man's child. He couldn't believe it. When he looked at her, he was never able to tell what she'd been going through. He remembered all the things that she'd said that hinted that something big, something wrong was going on in her life.
"Meri zindagi main aapke ilava, aur bhi muskhilein hai." She'd said this when he found her crying at her home after Mr. Chopra's party where he'd caused her to quit her job.
"Mujhe koi haq nahin hai ke main aapke liyeh kuch bhi mehsoon karoon." She'd said this with tears in her eyes outside the club.
"Main nahin chati ke meri zindagi ke boj thale, aap dab jayeh." She'd said this just a few nights ago.
Now, now he understood why. He finally understood why she was hell bent on tell him she didn't care, when in her eyes he could see that she did. He finally knew why she distanced herself from him, when he could see that he affected her just as much as she affected him. He finally understood everything.
He sat there thinking about it all. If she had told him herself that she was pregnant and had been duped into marrying a fraud, would he have believed her? Of course, he wanted to say yes but in all honesty, he wasn't sure. He knew that there were other ways that this could have come out. He wasn't blind to what happened in the office. He knew people were prejudiced towards Geet. Anyone could have easily made it seem like Geet was only getting close to him because of his money, or because she wanted to make it seem like he'd fathered the child. In his heart Maan knew that Geet would never do anything so disgusting, but one part of him feared how he might have reacted if the truth had been displayed as a half truth, twisted as needed by the person. He as human after all. And especially after what he'd faced with Sameera, he was cynical when it came to love to begin with.
Getting up, he walked over to her room. He pushed the door slightly to see if it was open or closed. When the door moved back, he immediately stopped. He debated on whether he should go in or not. He didn't want to invade her privacy, but in the end his hearts desire to see her was stronger than any logic his mind came up with. He gently opened the door, making sure it didn't make a sound. Her back was to the door, her face facing the open window. He walked around the bed, instantly taken by her beauty. As it was, she was a beautiful woman, but the moonlight hitting her face – it rendered him speechless. A soft breeze blew in causing her to shiver slightly and frown in her sleep. Looking around he saw a blanket at the foot of the bed. Then took it and placed it on her gently. She stirred slightly, but didn't wake. Instead she pulled the blanket close and gave a small smile. Maan couldn't help but grin.
He sat on the edge of the bed, just looking at her as she slept. She looked so calm and peaceful. Yet inside, he knew that inside she was facing a storm. He knew that inside, every passing second she spent getting ready to face the harsh worlds. He didn't doubt for one second that Geet was still pregnant. Geet was not the kind of person to make an innocent child suffer the deeds of his or her useless father. Any sliver of doubt he had was pushed aside when Geet tossed slightly and placed a hand protectively over her stomach.
The woman sleeping in front of him amazed him. Not once did she complain about how her life was turning out, not once! She went about her day, dealing with all its ups and downs, dealing with his moods, his anger and his tantrums. She went about her days dealing with him torturing her because she refused to accept how she felt for him.
Why? Why did he have to be such an egotistical jerk? If he hadn't had his pride and ego hurt by her refusal, maybe he'd actually have seen that there was more pain in her eyes than his. He played all the moments in his mind when he'd hurt her – physically and emotionally. The times he'd said that she was a weak woman who knew only to run from her problems and nto face them head on. How was he supposed to have knows that she was facing the biggest hurdle in her life head on? How the hell was he supposed to know!?
---------------------------------------
The next morning, Maan woke up after Geet. He had a very restless night as he thought about Geet. When he got up, he could hear her humming away in the kitchen. He peeked in to see her getting breakfast ready, and of course coffee. He returned about 30 minutes later to find her standing on a chair reaching for plates that were high on the cabinet. The chair shook suddenly, she yelped as she lost her balance. Instantly he sprang into action and caught her right in time.
Setting her on her feet he said, "Geet! Kya kaar rahi ho? Iss hal main tumhe aaise kaam nahin karna chahiyeh!"
"Ji?" she asked, confusion and worry in her eyes.
"Umm…mera matlab hai ke, yeh saab karne ke kya zarurat thi?" he stumbled.
"Woh, nashta…" she said as she pointed to the table.
There was a decent spread of eggs, toast, juice, fruits and coffee.
"Tumne khaya hai?" he asked.
She shook her head 'no'. Maan knew that if he didn't sit and eat with her, she wouldn't eat. That meant that she wouldn't be getting the nutrition that she and her baby needed.
"Aao, saath main khate hai," he said as he took a seat.
The smile on her face warmed him. It was then that he thought of the countless times that she'd worked late because of him, missed lunch because of him. What had he done? He'd been so lost in his own world, he'd been so selfish that he over looked everyone around him.
After eating breakfast, Geet asked again if she could follow him to the plot. On the drive there, Maan had brought up the matter of the property and how she'd lost control of it. Immediately she said that it was n the past, she didn't care about it any of it any more – then she became quiet. The rest of the ride was silent.
Once at the plot sight, they were greeted by Munshi-ji and his lawyers again. This time the addition was Rassika and her lawyers. Maan's blood boiled when he heard Geet apologize for the problem and begged her to take her case back. Why was Geet doing all this when she'd don't nothing wrong. Maan had been fighting this case to show that lady that she wasn't as great as she thought she was, so he could put her in her place. But now, now he was going to fight this to show her that no one – no one – made Geet feel insecure or inferior, no one hurt Geet.
He became immersed in dealing with everything related to the case. He had seen Geet go off on her own just walking for a bit. A while later he'd seen her laughing away with the same group of children that had surrounded her the day before.
After most of the work was wrapped up, Geet ask Maan if he would take her to the mandir. Of course he did. On the way there she explained to him how she came to this mandir at least twice a week. How on the way back her and her cousin would stop for gol-gappe's all the time. They walked up the steps together but his phone rang before they entered the mandir. It was his lawyer, he needed to take the call. He told Geet to go ahead and he'd join in he in a minute. Then he answered the phone.
"Maine keh diya naa, ke yeh project nahin hoga, toh…" Maan had just began to say.
His sentence died in his mouth when he felt someone bump into him. He was already irritated, this was pissing him off. He turned ready to blast off on the person who apparently didn't have the eyes needed to walk. Turning he saw that it was Geet who was standing behind him. When he put a hand on her shoulder, he saw she was shaking.
"Geet, kya hua?" he asked concerned. "Ge…" he began but immediately became quiet.
Looking in the direction that Geet was looking, he saw exactly what had her so scared that she was shaking. Walking in their direction was her brother, Brij.
"Geet teri himmat kaise hui vapas aane ki!" Brij roared.
Immediately, Maan dropped the phone that was in his hand. He stepped in front of Geet like a shield, pushing her behind him with his right hand.
"Dekh, maine tujhe pehle bhi kaha tha ke tujhe iss saab mein padne ke koi zarurat nahin hai," Brij yelled.
"Zarurat hai," was all Maan said.
"Geet mere saath jayegi!" Brij said.
"Geet kahin nahin jayegi!" Maan said harshly, as he felt Geet latch onto his arm, her finger nails digging into his skin.
Brij didn't pay any attention. He reached around Maan and grabbed a hold of Geet's arm, causing her to call out in pain.
"Nahin veer-ji," she pleaded as she struggled to get of his grip.
Maan in turn, grasped Brij's arm with all his strength.
"Geet kahin nahin jayegi," Maan said in a menacing tone. "Aur khabar joh tune phirse Geet ka haath pakda."
Brij laughed. "Aacha ashiq dunda hai tune Geet. Ek tujhe chodke chale gaye toh tune dusra dhund liyah?"
"Aaye!" Maan yelled as he grabbed Brij by the collar, lifting him off the floor. "Geet ke bare mein aaisa kuch kaha toh tu jaan se jayega!"
"Bohot garmi hai tujh mein Geet ke liyeh," Brij said "Tu jaanta kya hai Geet ke bare mein? Tu jaanta bhi hai ke uska ateet bhi hai?"
"Chup," Maan said.
"Tu jaata hai ke ussne aapna muh kaala karke aayi hai? Tu jaanta bhi hai ke woh aapni izzat gavake aayi hai?" Brij said.
"Nahin…maine aaisa kuch nahin kiya," Geet said.
Turning his head, Maan saw tears in Geet eyes.
"Tu jaanta bhi hai ke yeh neech ladki ne…………"
"BAAS!" Maan roared.
Geet and Brij were both shocked by his out burst.
"Baas," he said, "Bohot hogaya. Jitna mujhe jaan na hai, main jaanta hoon."
Brij didn't blink when he said, "Uske kartoon ki bare mein tu kya jaanta hai?"
"Saab kuch, saab kuch jaanta hoon main!" Maan said.
"Kya?" Brij said.
"Saab……………" Geet whispered behind him.
"Haan, saab janta hoon. Main jaanta hoon ke Geet ki shaadi tum saab ne zabardasti kardiya tha. Main jaanta hoon ke woh shaadi nakli thi aur shaadi ke dusri din woh admi usse chodke chala gaya tha."
"Inko kaise…" Geet whispered behind him.
"Tu…" Brij began but Maan shut him up.
"Main yeh bhi jaanta hoon ke Geet uske baache ki Maa banne wali hai," he said.
He heard Geet gasp.
Brij stood shocked but recovered quickly. "Saab kuch jaanta hai phir bhi tu uski saath hai. Yeh ladki aapni parivaar ka naam mitti mein milakar aayi hai. Saza toh usse milni chahiyeh." Brij reached out and took Geet's hand again.
"Maine kahata, Geet ko haat maat lagana," Maan said as he pushed Brij's arm away.
"Oye! Tu hota kaun hai? Yeh humari apsi mamla hai. Tu hota kaun hai iss mein aur Geet ki zindagi mein dhakal dene wale!?" Brij asked.
Without one word, Maat took Geet's hand into his. He pulled her behind him as he entered the mandir. He didn't stop until they stood in front of God. Then he looked into her eyes, seeing confusion, shock and fear.
"Daro maat Geet, main humesha tumhare saath hoon," he said.
What he did next, left everyone speechless. He took a pinch of sindoor from a thali that rested in front of God. He raised his hand to her forehead and filled the part in her hair with the sacred red powder. She looked at him – shocked.
"Yeh aapne kya kardiya?" Geet asked.
Maan turned to Brij. "Milgaya jawab! Geet meri paatni hai, meri zimedari hai. Aagar tu Geet ke aas paas bhi nazar aaya, toh jaan se mardunga!"
Brij didn't know what to do. Quietly, with his tail between his legs, he left.
Maan turned back to Geet who was still staring at him. With people looking at them, Geet turned and walked out of the mandir and headed back to the car.
"Yeh aapne kya kardiya?" she asked softly after Maan had joined her.
Maan didn't have an answer. He didn't realize what he was going to do until he'd already done it. Why he'd done it, he didn't know. But already he did know that he didn't regret it.
He watched as Geet raised her hand to wipe off the sindoor.
"Ruko Geet," he called as he held his hand.
"Kyun?" she asked. "Aapko paata bhi hai aapne kya kiya hai?"
"Haan pata hai," he said. "Joh bhi kiya hai, tik hi kiya hai."
"Nahin, yeh sahi nahin hai," Geet said. "Main nahin chati ke meri vajese aapko kissi bi tarha ki problems ho."
"Aapni zindagi ke bare mein, main khud faisla kar sakta hoon Geet."
"Phir bhi…aap nahin jaante…" Geet began.
"Baas Geet baas! Saab jaanta hoon main. Aur aab…aab saab samajta bhi hoon."
Geet looked at him.
"Aab main samaj gaya hoon ke tum mujhse door kyun bhate the. Woh issi liyeh kyun ke tum nahin chati ke tumhare vajese meri zindagi mein koi bhi muskhil aayein, issi liyeh nahin kyun ke tum mere liyeh kuch mehsoos nahin karti," Maan said.
Geet looked away unable to meet his eyes.
"Main jaanta hoon ke tum bhi mere liyeh woh mehsoos karti ho, joh main tumhare liyeh mehsoos karta hoon. Tumhari akhoon bhi wohi ehsaas hai joh mere akhoon mein hai," he added.
"Baas kijiyeh," Geet said stepping away.
Maan was not about to let her go, so he grabbed her hand and pulled her back. She crashed into him, her back to him as he held her close.
"Aaj tum mujhe nahin rok paogi Geet," he said in raspy voice.
She stayed quiet and still.
"Mere dil main jis ladki ne jaga banali hai, woh koi aur nahin…tum ho Geet. Tum ho," he whispered.
"Margar…" she began.
"I love you Geet. Tumhare liyeh main kuch bhi kar sakta hoon," he said.
"Lekin main akeli nahin hoon," she said as she turned to face him.
"Jaanta hoon. Tumhare pet mein joh baacha hai, woh tumhara hissa hai…baas mere liyeh itna hi kafi hai," he said.
Geet's eyes filled with tears. "Aap jaante bhi hai, ke aap kya keh rahe hai?"
"Main yeh keh raha hoon ke Geet…tum mere liyeh saab kuch ho, aur tumhari kushi ke liyeh main kuch bhi kaar sakta hoon."
He saw the questions still fresh in her eyes.
"Geet, mujhe tumhari ateet se koi lena dena nahin hai," he said. "Mujhe toh baas iss baath ka dukh hai ke tumne iss layak nahin samja ke mere saath tumhare dil ke baath baant sako."
"Aaisa nahin hai," Geet began as she shook her head. "Main darti thi ke…"
"Tumhe darne ki koi zarurat nahin hai Geet. Main tumhare saath hoon…humesha ke liyeh," he vowed.
They looked at each other for a long while not saying anything. It had been Maan who took her into his arms first. A moment later, he felt her hug him back. She grabbed onto him tight as she wept.
"Shh Geet, roh maat," he said as he stroked her head. "Main hoon naa, tumhe aur humare baache ko kuch nahin hoga. Main humesha tumhare saath hoon."
She pulled back and looked at him in awe. Maan knew it was because he'd called her baby his own just now.
"I love you too," she said as she raised herself to her toes and placed a soft kiss on his cheek.
