Maan had arranged for a private nurse to take care of Dadima, to relieve Geet from her day and night vigils beside Dadima. With Dadi's health still unstable, he resumed working from the outhouse and got back his staff there. That evening after every one had left his office, Maan asked Geet to wait back. Expecting him to give her more work she walked up to his desk and was puzzled to see him packing up.
"Sir..," she hesitated in front of him.
He looked up and said, "Maan. Call me Maan outside office hours."
"Maan, I thought you wanted me to stay back for work but then I see you are leaving?" she asked, casting a puzzled look at him.
"Yes, and so are you. You are coming with me," he said matter-of-factly.
"Where?" she asked, still confused as to what was in his mind.
"You'll get your answers. Now freshen up and join me in front of the mansion in fifteen minutes," he said and walked towards the door.
She hastened after him, "What should I wear?"
He turned around and cocking an eyebrow he said mischievously, "Anything you want. It doesn't matter. You are not going to stay in those clothes for long."
She went red in the face hearing this. How can he be so brazen she thought to herself. They are not even married as yet and he is already'.
Before she could complete her thought, he chipped in, "Don't worry. I'll uphold your honour."
She looked at him in confusion.
"Are you going to stand there and stare at me?" he asked.
"Nno... I..'"
"Geet, go on. Get ready. Don't think too much," he said and proceeded to his mansion.
Geet went up to her room and after a lot of thought she settled for a simple pink Punjabi suit. Quickly brushing her hair and tying it back in a braid she hurried to the front of the mansion where Maan was waiting in his Mercedes. He had changed into a snow white shirt and light blue denim jeans.
"Shall we go?" he asked after she took her seat next to him in the front and buckled herself in.
She nodded her head and he drove them to a posh shopping mall in South Delhi. She looked at him curiously. He motioned her to get off and later joined her after parking his car. Holding her by the elbow he guided her to a large designer saree shop. Geet's eyes widened seeing the beautiful sarees in the stands around the floor.
"Geet, choose a saree you like," he said, giving her an indulgent look.
She looked up at him and nodding her head she slowly walked up to one of the stands and flipped through the sarees hanging in the hangers there. She pulled out a red saree she liked and checked the price tag. Her eyes widened in shock and she quickly replaced it back and looked around. To her consternation, none of the sarees there were priced less than Rs.20,000. Maan who was watching Geet silently from a distance, was amused by her expressions as she kept pulling out one saree after another and hastily returning it back seeing the price tag. The sales girls in the shop tried to help her out but she did not seem satisfied.
Within a few minutes, Geet threw up her hands and said, "Maan, let's go somewhere else."
"Why, did you not find anything you like here? I thought you liked that red embroidered saree."
"Well, that one looks beautiful, but its price is not," she said.
Maan merely smiled and walked up to the stand from where she had taken the saree. Flipping through the sarees, he located it and pulled it out.
"It looks beautiful, Geet. Take it," he said handing it to her.
She thrust it back at him saying, "I can't afford it."
"But I can. Come on take it, Geet. It is my first gift to you."
"No, Maan," she said firmly. "If I wear it, I'll be thinking that I am walking around wearing my salary."
Maan looked at her in puzzlement.
"The saree costs as much as my entire month's salary," she said by way of explanation, not able to come out of her middle class mentality. "It is a criminal waste to throw so much money on a saree like that. I can get a similar one for less than one fourth of that price from a shop I know in Sarojini Market."
Knowing that it is difficult to get Geet to change her mind once she's made it up, Maan sighed and said, "OK. So let's go there, then."
Thanking the sales girls in the shop for their co-operation, he escorted her out of the mall.
Soon they were in Sarojini Market at one of the saree shops.
Geet felt more at home in this shop. She dragged a stool up to the counter and comfortably seating herself, she asked Maan to sit next to her. She then asked the salesman to take out embroidered chiffon sarees in bright colours. The guy quickly pulled out all the chiffon sarees he had from the rack. Skimming through the pile, she finally found a saree she liked. It was very similar to the one she had picked in the mall. Turning to Maan, she asked him how it looked. Maan indicated that he liked it. She checked the price tag and smiled. It costed a little less than Rs.4,000 and she proudly pointed it out to Maan. Maan smiled and acknowledged that she was indeed a smart shopper. He asked her to select matching readymade blouse and skirt as he wanted her to wear the saree. She looked at him in surprise.
"You want me to wear it now?" she asked, wondering whether she had understood him.
"Yes, we are going out on our first date right away," he said.
Her eyes widened and her mouth gaped in surprise.
"Geet, if you don't close your mouth, you may get a fly in there," he said, bringing her back to the present.
After she selected the blouse and skirt, she went into the trial room and changed into the saree.
When she stepped out, Maan, who had settled the bill by then, gave a low whistle. She looked stunning in the saree. They got her pink suit packed in a plastic cover. Maan couldn't take his eyes off his Geet as they walked out of the shop together. Geet had to keep him from bumping into passersby.
As they got into the car, Geet warned him, "Maan, I think you have had enough staring for a day. Now, can you please turn your attention to the road? Otherwise our first date can well become our last one."
Maan nodded and mockingly said in a meek tone, "Yes, Madame. Yours obediently."
As he was about to start the ignition, she covered his hand with hers and said, "Maan, remember to include sixteen thousand rupees in my salary for this month."
He looked at her quizzically, "What sixteen thousand rupees?"
"The money I saved you by buying the saree from here instead of the mall. Since you were already prepared to shell out twenty thousand rupees, should you not be giving me the balance?"
"Geet, you sound worse than a money lender!" he exclaimed, genuinely surprised by her calculative nature.
She was hurt by the comparison and said cryptically, "I am not as mean as a money lender. It is for a cause."
He raised an eyebrow but she refused to elaborate. Shrugging his shoulders, he said "OK, I'll ask Adi to add the amount to your salary this month. Now are you satisfied?"
She nodded but still looked morose. Actually she was setting aside some money from her salary every month to create a fund for women like her who have been abandoned after marriage. She was lucky enough to have found a job on the day she landed in Delhi, despite her lack of qualification. As though that was not enough, destiny has got her a man with a heart of gold, willing to accept her as she is. Not all women will have her luck. So she intended to help such women in whatever way she could. As she had not yet firmed up her plans, she felt embarrassed to discuss this with anyone, not even with the man she had agreed to get married to. Maybe in time she may tell him about it but not now.
Maan turned to look at her and was concerned to see her sad face. In order to cheer her up, he switched on the car stereo to a lively Daler Mehndi number. Hearing it, Geet soon came out of her gloomy mood and cheerfully snapped her fingers to the beat. Maan was relieved to see her happy again.
Half an hour later they were in front of an uptown hotel. While the exteriors looked like a star hotel, the interiors had the ambience of a traditional punjabi dhabba. Maan guided her to the terrace of the hotel which was exclusively reserved for them. Two rope woven cots (khatiya) were set in the centre of the terrace with a bamboo table between them. In one corner of the terrace was a long swing with a shamiana top. The place was lit up by small diyas which were lined up on the surrounding walls. As it was a full moon night, natural lighting also enhanced the atmosphere. Once they took their places, food arrived.
Geet was excited to see her favourite dish 'makki ki roti and sarson ka saag' on the menu and asked for it. After having cucumber soup, she delved into makki rotis and complimented the chef for making them exactly like they make them back home in Hoshiarpur. Seeing her enthusiasm, Maan ordered the same food as her and agreed with her judgment after having it. For dessert they had piping hot jalebis, matka kulfi and phirni. After the food was cleared, the waiters discretely left them to their privacy on getting a non-verbal communication from Maan.
Maan then took her by the hand and led her to the swing. Seated next to her, he held both her hands in his and looking deeply into her eyes he said earnestly. "Geet, there is something I want to know."
Geet looked at him curiously.
"Why did you agree to marry me, Geet?"
She blushed a deep red and bowed down her head. He lifted her chin and repeated the question. Not getting an answer, he pleaded. "Please, Geet. Whatever is your reason, I can take it but I'd like to know. Was it only because I asked you to?"
She shook her head. "I agreed to marry you because..." she hesitated.
"Yes, Geet, you agreed to marry me because...." he prompted her to speak her mind.
"Because..I .love... you" she drawled out.
Hearing this, Maan's face broke into a broad smile. Holding her face in the palms of his hands, he dragged it towards him and gently enveloped her lips in his in a tender kiss. When he let her go after a couple of minutes, she was breathing heavily. His fingers slowly unbraided her hair and let it frame her face. He then stood up and yanked her up.
"There is something I want to gift you," he said "Will you accept it?"
Geet looked at him in confusion but nodded her head. As she already felt bad about how she reacted to his saree gift, she did not want to offend him further.
He whipped out a long jewellery case he had hidden behind him and pulled out a long golden chain-like object which had the initials M and G interlinked in the centre. Geet presumed it to be a neck chain and bent her head slightly forward so that he could put it round her neck. Instead, she was surprised to see him kneel before her in one knee.
He gently lifted her saree where it covered her midriff and encircling her waist with his arms, he wrapped the chain around it and fixed the adjustable clutch.
"This is called a kamarband or a waist band," he said by way of explanation. "This is a symbol that I not only accept you but the baby within you." He then leaned forward and kissed the gently rising mound of her tummy, sending shivers down her spine. "Now that kiss was not for you, but for our baby," he said proudly as he straightened up.
Her eyes quickly filled up with tears of joy. "Maan, I am truly blessed to have you in my life," she said in a voice which was cracking up with emotion.
He shook his head and said, "No, I am the one truly blessed to have a woman who is so beautiful from the outside as well as inside."
The moon seemed to be smiling happily at the young couple as they embraced each other in love under its light.
