Dev realised his wife had overheard his verbal exchange with Dadima. He tried to smoothen her ruffled feathers by turning on his charm.

"Come on Babes. Don't take this seriously, yaar. How was I to react when my bro suddenly confronts me with his knowledge of our dark deeds? I tried to lie my way through but he couldn't be fooled."

"Just because you got caught why did you implicate me too? What was the need to tell Dadima that I had hatched the plan? Now how will I be able to face her? She always had a good impression of me. Thanks to you, that's gone now."

"What makes you so sure Maan veerji knew about my role in this? If you had kept quiet, at least I would have remained free to save your hide, had you got caught. By opening your big mouth you have ensured that both of us will be counting the bars in the prison."

The mention of prison made Dev very nervous."Don't blame me for everything, darling. You were the mastermind of this devious plan. It is because of you, I am in trouble."

"How very convenient of you to forget that I ran up those debts to satisfy your avarice. So you are the root cause for everything," he said accusingly, pointing his finger at her.

"So now you are pointing your finger at me, are you?!" she screamed and unable to contain her anger any longer she lunged at him, digging her long fingernails into the bare portion of his chest which was revealed in the lose bathrobe he wore.

Dev was shocked by her ferocity as he looked down to see the marks left by her nails. He pushed her hard and she fell back on the bed with a thud.

Before she could get up, he pinned her down and said in a pleading voice, "Come on, there's no use quarrelling amongst ourselves. We need to put up a united front if we have to come out of this."

Naintara was about to retort but stopped herself as she knew he was right. Both of them sat side by side on the bed, their heads buried in their hands, silently contemplating their next course of action.

After a few minutes of thoughts, Naintara lifted her head up and snapping her fingers, she said excitedly, "I know what we'll do. I have a distant uncle who is a leading criminal lawyer here in Delhi. My father had done a lot for him so he owes me a big one. I'll arrange for our anticipatory bail through him."

Dev was relieved to hear this. "Darling, I always knew you will have a solution to all our problems. What will I do without a smart wife like you," he praised her.

Ignoring his flattery, Naintara quickly dialled her uncle's number. Over the next half hour she briefed him about their deeds and sought his help out of their troubles. When she replaced the phone, she broke into a broad smile.

"I guess we can sleep in peace. My uncle will take care of everything. It is a good thing that we had kept the entire affair clandestine."

Dev still had his doubts. "Despite our precautions, don't know how bro came to know of it. Would he not testify against us?"

"I doubt it, Dev. Not after your clever manipulation of your brother's and Dadi's emotions. I saw how guilty both of them looked for not helping you when they could. You keep that up. Don't let their conscience ease even for a minute. You are very good at emotional blackmail."

"Then why do we need the anticipatory bail?" he asked in confusion.

"Well, that is just a precautionary measure if either of them wants to play by the rule of law. Better to be safe than sorry, " she replied.

Dev smiled for the first time after the confrontation. Heaving a sigh of relief, he hugged his wife and said.

"Thanks, darling. Let's catch up on some sleep to face another bright day, then."

He led her to the bed, switching off the light on his way.
