With the rains lashing relentlessly, visibility was reduced the zero. To make matters worse, a strong gusty wind started blowing, causing the trees lined up on either side of the road to sway precariously. Maan realised it was dangerous to stay on the road, especially when there is a risk of a tree or two getting uprooted and falling on their car, smashing them all to a pulp. So he turned into the nearest hotel and parked his car. Geet looked at him in surprise and refused to get off when he asked her to.
"Come on, Geet. I have no patience to put up with your tantrums. We have to take shelter here at the hotel till the weather improves. I cannot risk driving us both in this storm."
Geet looked around to see the sheet of water pouring down and had to agree that he was right. She silently got off and allowed herself to be dragged into the umbrella he held for her. They stepped into the lobby of the hotel which was crowded with people like them, desperate to escape the storm and find a shelter for the night. Maan rushed to the reception and asked for two rooms but was told that there was only one room available. He turned around to see Geet, who looked appalled at the thought of sharing a room with him. Ignoring her mortification, Maan requested the man to book them in as Mrs and Mr.Khurana.
As they were led to the room, Geet pulled Maan's arm and whispered angrily, "Sir, how could you do this? I cannot share the room with you. And you even told them that I am your wife!"
"So?" asked Maan laconically, raising his eyebrow. "What do you want me to do? You heard the man, didn't you? There is only one room available. If I had delayed in taking it, someone else would have picked it up and we would be stranded. Moreover, it is better that we are booked in as husband and wife to ward off any suspicions."
Geet knew he was right again but muttered to herself her displeasure about their situation and looked up to her babaji to take care of her through the night without any further problems cropping up. Once they were alone in the room, Maan turned to Geet and asked her to change into some dry clothes as he did not want her to fall sick in her condition. Geet was about to retort but thought it better to hold her tongue. She quickly picked up a pair of salwar kameez from her suitcase and went to the bathroom. When she came out, she saw Maan had already removed his wet shirt and left it to dry by the heater. She quickly diverted her gaze from his greek god-like bare torso and proceeded to dry her hair with the towel. Even though her back was to him, she could feel his searing gaze on her.
"So are you going to keep staring at me for the rest of the night?" she asked him, throwing him off guard.
"Ugh, no. I..." he stuttered, embarrassed at being caught gaping at her beauty, much like a kid caught with his hand in the candy jar. To overcome his embarrassment he decided to take the offensive and asked her why she did not reveal about her pregnancy all these days.
Now it was Geet's turn to fumble. "I...Well, ....I..." She then summed up her courage and retorted, "Why should I? Is there any rule against pregnant women working for you?"
Maan was on his back foot again. "No, there is no such rule. But then, had I known you were pregnant, I could have been more careful around you. Now you are making me feel guilty for the many times I had manhandled you and overworked you. The other day, in my anger, I nearly threw you out of the outhouse in the middle of the night and on another occasion when I thought you were mocking me, I had roughly pushed you around. Do you think I will be able to live with myself if, God forbid, something had happened to you then?" He closed his eyes, unable to even bear the thought.
Geet was surprised by his reaction and looked at him in amazement. "Nothing happened to me. I am fine!" she tried to reassure him.
"Three months," she said softly. Somehow the thought that she had surrendered herself to another man, and that too not long ago, did prick him a bit. He tried to shrug off the thought from his mind. He had no claim on her past, he reasoned. Forget her past, he did not even have a claim on her present, as she had not committed herself to him in any way.
"Have you ever shown yourself to a doctor?" he asked sceptically.
She shook her head in the negative. Seeing this, he cursed under his breath. "Chalti Phirti Disaster!" he muttered.
"What?" she asked him, not being able to hear him.
"I said chalti phirti disaster. You are, forever, getting yourself into trouble and I have to keep getting you out. How irresponsible of you to not have visited a doctor in all these months, not to mention the careless way you have been sprinting around. Were you hoping to have a spontaneous miscarriage to get rid of your baggage?" he asked bitingly, suddenly angry at her for neglecting her health and her baby's.
Geet's eyes widened in shock. She couldn't believe what he was accusing her of.
"Mr.Khurana!" she yelled out, addressing him by his surname for the first time in her life. "Do you even have the slightest idea of what I had been through to keep this baby?" Her eyes were two balls of blazing fire.
Maan was shocked to see this extreme reaction from her. He stared back at her in silence, waiting for her to elaborate.
"Why do you think my family wanted to kill me? They wanted me to abort the child but I refused. I risked my life for my baby and broke ties with my family for my baby and you have the audacity to accuse me for wanting a miscarriage? How dare you?"
Maan suddenly felt ashamed of himself. He did not know what came over him. Maybe his former wife's act of aborting their baby had prompted him to make a similar allegation against Geet. But then, he was being totally unreasonable. If anything, Geet has done the exact opposite of what his ex-wife did. While Sameera, who despite the support of her husband, got rid of their baby for a better and carefree life for herself, Geet has given up her family and risked her life in order the bring her baby into this world and that too without the support of the unknown father. Maan looked at Geet in awe. There are such brave, courageous and selfless women like her in this world too, he thought. And here he was, underestimating her strength of character and pompously claiming that it is he who has been taking care of her.
Geet calmed down and feeling drained from her outburst, she staggered to the nearby bed and sat on it with a thud, letting go of the towel which slid to the floor.
