Chapter 4
Where do I go from here?
She locked her room and started to dial his number. She heard a busy tone in return. She dialed again only to hear the same tone one more time. She paused for a second, took a deep breath and dialed again. "The number you are trying to reach is not responding at the moment. Please try again later". She heard the operator. Tears rolled out from her eyes. "Geeet!! Open the door! NOW!" A harsh voice echoed in her ears. She suddenly broke off from her thoughts. "Main keh rahi hoon darwaza kholo!!" She saw her hands shaking. She quickly filled her bag with the things she would never want to lose. She kept her cell phone in a safe place and walked towards the door. "Tum sun rahi ho Geet!!" The voice came again. She calmly unlocked the door and saw a woman standing there. The woman was furious like she would strangle her any minute. She grabbed her from her shoulder and pulled her out of the room. "Sunai nahi deta tumhe! Kabse darwaza kholne ko keh rahi hoon! Kiya kar rahi thi". She demanded. "Kuch nahi". She spoke with her eyes on the floor. Before she could say more, she felt a heavy hand slap her on the cheek and she fell to the ground.
"She ruined it! She ruined my life". She heard another voice. A girl was standing where she fell and she knew it was her. She did not bother to look up. She fell with a thud and felt her body break into pieces. She wanted to cry but her tears refused to come out. She wanted to yell that she was hurt but she knew no one was there to hold her hand. She saw her bag fall next to her and........"dafa ho jao yahan se! Abhi isi waqt!" The woman screamed again. She held the handle of her bag and managed to stand up. She was helpless this time. She wanted to tell them not to leave her like this.
"Aaap...." but she was stopped before she completed her sentence. "Chup! Aik lafz bhi nahi sunna mujhe". The woman became harsher than before. She pulled her furiously and said, "Aor aaj ke baad yahan anay ki koshish bhi ki toa jaan se maar doongi". She turned around quietly and walked towards the door dragging her bag like she had no life in herself. She heard the door shut as soon as she stepped out.
It was 1:00am, pitch black outside. She looked up to the sky and a tear fell out from her eye...then another...and another. It was only then that she felt she was still alive and breathing. She fell to the ground and burst into tears. She yelled, screamed, called out names, but there was no one to hear her plea. She did not bother to knock the door to let her in again. She knew she would fail.
"Kapil" Her eyes widened as she suddenly said his name. She unzipped her bag and took out her cell phone. She quickly dialed the same number again. There was nothing. Silence. She dialed again. "The number you are trying to reach is not responding at the moment. Please try again later". And she dialed again ignoring the operator. And again. And again until her hands fell tired. "Kapil...please..." She whispered to herself hiding her face in her hands. Her tears rolled out of her eyes. "Please aik bar. Sirf aik bar phone utha lo". She tried her luck again but in vain. She could not believe that it was the same person who loved her, supported her through thick and thin. The one who made sure she was never alone. The one who always saved her from the tough times of her life and told her that he will be always by her side. She could not believe that he was not there this time when she was, most probably having the hardest time of her life. "Did he deliberately cut off her call" a thought crossed her mind but she jerked it away. "NO! That can't be" she talked to herself. "He cannot do this in a million years". She self-satisfied herself. "But he's been away since a week now. Why didn't he ask about me? Not a single call he made." She was again thinking. Sometimes talking to herself out loud, sometimes whispering, and sometimes thinking. She spent her whole night there, in front of the door, sometimes waiting for the door to open and sometimes waiting for the phone to buzz but nothing happened. She had lost all hopes.
The first ray of sunlight opened her eyes. She felt like she just came out of a nightmare. The next moment, she realized that it all happened for real. She was really lying in front of the door; she was kicked out of the house cruelly and was left to wander on the streets.
