Nothing Can Keep Us ApartPart 23 - Women are never on time
Maan had been pacing agitatedly for at least the last 15 minutes. Why was it that women were never on time? He had been ready for over an hour, Dadima was ready also, and yet they were still waiting for Geet. If she didn't come down in the next 5 minutes, Maan was prepared to retrieve her, by force if necessary.
"Dadima, what is taking her so long?"
"Beta, it takes time for women to get ready for functions like this. I'm sure Geet will join us shortly."
Nothing that Savitri said was working with Maan. He hadn't seen Geet since she left the office earlier in the day. He'd even been bared from their room, and had to use one of the guest rooms to get ready. That had not sat very well with him.
"She's had more than 4 hours, she should be ready by now."
"Be patient, Maan."
"I've been patient, Dadima! Those stylist people left some twenty minutes ago. What could she still be doing?"
"Why don't you go and find out?"
That was all Maan needed to go and do just that. He bounded up the stairs and walked quickly to their room, ready to haul her away from whatever it was she was still doing. When he reached the doorway, the sight that greeted him caused him to hault and completely forget his intentions.
The only way to describe how Geet looked was angelic. Not that Maan would have been able to say anything at that point. His voice was robbed of speech, while his heart began to beat faster and faster. Maan had never seen Geet in saree before, and the delicate white saree she was wearing, suited her perfectly. He moved slowly towards his beautiful wife like he was in a dream, with no control over himself. Deep in concentration, Geet was unaware of Maan's presence, and he walked right up to her undetected.
After staring at her for a few moments, he noticed that she was struggling to fasten a necklace. His hands moved involuntarily towards her ineffective fingers, and as his fingers touched hers, they both felt an unexpected jolt of electricity. Geet's eyes widened as she looked up into the mirror, and saw Maan standing next to her. Understanding his intentions, she let him take hold of the necklace and fasten it for her. As her arms fell to her side, her breathing increased as she felt the feather light touches of his fingers against her neck, which brushed her skin softly as he attempted to fasten the clasp.
When he was finished, Maan asked, "Are you ready now?" Geet nodded.
As they left to join Savitri, Maan asked Geet another question. "Why did you wear saree? I was expecting you to wear western dress this evening."
Geet had been feeling very strange and vulnerable since Maan had fastened her necklace, but when he started his usual criticizing, she forgot about the incident in her irritation.
"Why shouldn't I wear saree? We live in India. I am Indian. What is so wrong with wearing Indian clothes in India? Babaji, if this is how the night is going to start, I won't get through it without your help!"
With Geet scowling at Maan, Maan unable to stop gazing at Geet, and Savitri amused at their behavior, the three finally left for the much anticipated party.
