Suhasini Mulay enters Geet

One of the most powerful actresses in India is making her presence felt on STAR One's Geet-Hui Sabse Parayi.

Suhasini Mulay was spotted by first Mrinal Sen and cast in Bhuvan Shome in 1969, and went on to impress Oscar winner Satyajit Ray. Utterly convincing in every role she has done, Suhasini will be coming to the serial as Maan Singh Khurana and Dev's opulent and strong willed grandmother.

Suhasini has a unique background and the sort of resume that actresses can only dream about. An agriculture technology graduate from Montreal's McGill University, she began her reel life as a documentary film maker. Legendary director Mrinal Sen cast her in Bhuvan Shome. He spotted her during the fifth International Film Festival that happened in Delhi, where she was working as an assistant. Satyajit Ray was the chairman of the jury, and he liked her work so much that he offered her the job of his personal assistant. So overwhelmed was she that she moved base to Kolkata. Suhasini helped Ray in making the film that went on to become Jana Aranya.

She continued working with masters, and her next project was acting in Gulzar's Hu Tu Tu. She shined as an actress immediately, and won the National Award for her role as an ordinary school teacher rising to the post of a chief minister, in 1999. Four national awards on documentary films titled An Indian Story (based on the Bhagalpur blindings), Bhopal Beyond Genocide (based on the Bhopal gas tragedy), Chithi (based on education), Official Art Form (based on paintings) joined the one she won for acting.

In Bollywood her acting credits include such iconic films as Lagaan and Dil Chahta Hai. She played Bobby Deol's grandma in Humraaz. One of her most memorable roles in recent times was in Jodha Akbar in which she played Aishwarya's mother Rani Padmavati.

And we haven't even spoken about Suhasini's roles on television yet. She's had major parts in shows like Jabb Love Hua, Chalti Ka Naam Gaddi, Shagun, Jaane Kya Baat Hui, Piya Ka Ghar in which she played mother to Narayani Shastri, and most recently as the stern Rajputana family head Saheliyaan - Kismat ki Kathputaliyaan.

In every show she has worked on, her character has come to life through the power of her performances. On STAR Plus' afternoon show Shagun she played the adorable grandmother of the male protagonist. In Virasat, she played a mother but not the 'gharelu' type; she is a woman who gives more importance to the step-son than her own children, which is a relief from the stereotype of the step-mother. Then in Piya Ka Ghar she played the crippled wife of Alok Nath. Though crippled, she is the one who wears the pants in the house. What an amazing character! Only Suhasini Mulay could have pulled it off.

And now she has entered Geet's world as the head of the Kurana family, the person nobody can take lightly, in STAR One's Geet-Hui Sabse Parayi every Monday to Friday at 9 30 pm. Don't miss it!
