Dear friends,

This does not truly qualify as a CK, since I am not good at jokes and funny comments, unlike many others in this forum. This is more of a tribute to my hometown, Madras, that seems to have disappeared, leaving a new city, Chennai, in its wake. Since many of you may never have seem the Madras that I knew, I thought I would take you along with me on this journey. When I heard about Vinu's untimely demise, that gave me some ideas about making this a tribute. Please do not be offended if I omit someone in this party, it is strictly accidental, not intentional. All of you are invited to go along with me, at least in spirit.

I have just decided to abandon my various drafts, so here goes nothing ...

The Beach party

Scene 1: A secluded beach along the Mahabalipuram road

Time: evening


There is soft music playing - kadalorum vaangiya kaatru, ...and the music is being wafted by the breeze. The scent of malligaipoo, along with the aroma of tandoori food being grilled nearby ... Susan takes out the drums and drums softly ... Hosanna is swaying to the music in a bright yellow sarong, Roja is in a madisar with her hair flowing in the air as she takes to the air in the swing ... Leela has finally decided to take out the bathing suit, bought last Christmas, and is wearing it, but has covered it up with an over-sized T shirt, Bon is relaxing in a hammock with a photograph of ACD tucked inside the pages of the latest David Baldacci novel, the citronella candles are glowing in the distance, KS is strumming a guitar, Jagdu is laughing as he is thinking of the jokes received in his email that morning, vsur is humming to himself ...

Jas is looking for someone, who would that be? She is peering into the night, and Leela and Nallu decide to follow her as she walks away, looking behind her to make sure no one has noticed her departure. Nallu is looking slim in her newest pair of shorts and tank top, and is thinking that she should have worn the matching flip flops that she saw at Lifestyles. She watches Jas pull out her cell phone and dial a number. Suddenly, a figure comes out of the waves. It looks like a woman, with long hair, but what is this? It looks like a fish, can this be a mermaid? Is this Jas's secret? Leela tries to look through her binoculars, but it is too dark to see anything.

Meantime, Kavi has just brought out a plate of Green cauliflower fries, and the aroma wafts out to where leela and Nallu are standing, trying to spy on Jas. They turn around and can see all their friends, huddled around Kavi and her goodies, and turn around to find ... Where did Jas go? What happened to that mermaid?

Suddenly they hear a song, in a strange unearthly tone. They follow the sound to a cave in the rocks, and peer inside to see a bright light. Nallu is slim enough so she squeezes herself inside and she can see three mermaids, combing out their long tresses. Wait a minute, it can't be, or is it? One of the mermaids looks like Caryn, and another one like Vinu. Hmmm, who is the third? She must be someone new. Nallu slowly backs out of the cave, and tells Leela what she just saw. Leela wants to see for herself, but ... she gets stuck!
