"I didn't want to work with Govinda," Salman!

18 Jul, 2007 09:54 am ISTlGautam Buragohain/INDIATIMES MOVIES

Love him or hate him, but one can't simply ignore the handsome 'Pathan' as he calls himself. At 42, life has come full circle for the controversial Khan. Though he still looks like a dormant volcano waiting to explode when provoked, one can't help but notice his new mellowed down image. Ask him about his age and he raises his one eyebrow and smirks. "I'm 42, so what? I'm more fit than you," Can't argue with this one. What's the secret behind his fitness? "I have always been a fitness freak right from my childhood, I go to my gym daily and besides that run for 10 km everyday. Can you do this?" he asked.

We switch the topic to his much talked about rumoured marriage and it certainly irritates him. "C'mom guys give me a break. Why should I hide my own marriage? The day I get married the whole world will know about it," he informs getting irritated. We fear any further trespassing in to his privacy will be prosecuted and decided to change the topic to his newly found Salman Khan Foundation and his face lights up. "We are organizing a special screening of my film Partner for about five hundred underprivileged children. I failed to understand why people form foundations in their names and depend on others to fill the coffers. The very purpose of the foundation is defeated. I will raise money for my own foundation through my films, my shows and my paintings. My Foundation will run with my own money." he says and adds "People today are a bit apprehensive about giving away their money since they feel it won't land up with the right people. And unlike others, I won't have hundreds of staff or a CEO to run my foundation as half of my money will go towards paying their salaries. So my sister is a trustee and she will run the show," he says.

And what's his newly formed mutual admiration society with Govinda? "I must admit today, initially I was shit scared of working with Govinda. I didn't want to work with him. He is such a great actor. He will eat you up alive. But then bahut himat karke, I jumped in it. I think we make a good pair on the screen. It was a delight to work with him." he quips. Govinda has been going around saying he owes his career revive to Salman. "No, he was always a great actor it was only that when he joined politics, producers feared that his erratic political schedule may come in the way of the film. And all I did was clear the misconception about him," says Salman refusing to take any credit for himself. What's the USP of Partner? "It's a fun filled non stop entertainer and the coming together of David and Govinda," he avers. What about you? 'Oh, of course I'm also there and more the reason to watch it," he winks. And besides Partner, he is finally making his long delayed debut in Hollywood with Marigold. "It's not delayed, this is the normal schedule for any Hollywood project," he defends.

So at 42, has he finally mellowed down and tame his infamous temper of his? "No, I haven't" he dares. "If I see wrong and injustice happening, I will react as I always do. It takes a lot to lose my temper," he informs. And surely he has nothing to lose....

Salman watches Partner with kids

By MovieTalkies.com, 19 July 2007

Salman Khan is a man with a heart of gold. The actor organized a special screening of his latest movie Partner with some of the underprivileged kids of Mumbai. And he even managed to get Sienna Miller, who is in town, to agree to make an appearance.

In fact, it is believed that Miller specially rearranged her schedule to fit in the screening of David Dhawan's Partner. The Khan's magic worked on her. And the Khan magic worked on the children as well present at the event as well. The venue was the Cinemax theatre in the suburbs, and making an appearance along with Salman was girlfriend Katrina Kaif, brother Sohail Khan, director David Dhawan, Lara Dutta, Rajpal Yadav and Nafisa Ali among others. The actors interacted with the children in the auditorium and got a one-on-one feedback from them on the film.

Partner

20 Jul, 2007 10:46 am ISTlGautam Buragohain/INDIATIMES MOVIES

Cast: Salman Khan, Govinda, Lara Dutta, Katrina Kaif, Rajpal Yadav
Director: David Dhavan
Producer: Sohail Khan and Parag Sanghvi
Genre: Comedy
Rating: ***

The Story

It revolves around a lovelorn guy and a love guru Prem (Salman). The real fun begins when Bhaskar (Govinda) meets Prem and seeks his help to woo his dream girl Priya, (Katrina) a scion of a tycoon. Prem's silly willy and mushy guidelines eventually helps Bhaskar win over Priya. Prem too with his undying resilience wins over his photojournalist ladylove Naina (Lara Dutta), a single mother. But hang on, there's a twist to the tale when Naina discovers that love guru's advices to a jerk pretending to be a lover boy, destroys the life of her best friend who falls prey to it. She writes an expose story in newspapers and what follows in this fun riot is a little emotion that finally irons out all differences and unites all the lovers.

Partners

Govinda aala re aala, the tune kept reverberating on my head as I watched awestruck the return of the comedy king in the year's most eagerly awaited comic caper. I must admit that the once Hero No 1 and the maharaja of the masses hasn't lost any of his old charm. His hip- shaking dancing skills and more importantly, his comic timings are intact and par excellence. And when the comic king breaks into the title song Do You Wanna Partner and other foot tapping numbers along with Salman, occasionally we too get tempted to burst into a wild dance step. When it comes to comedy, Chi Chi still rules...

Salman Khan with his trademark 'cool dude' comedy has never faltered when it comes to giving audiences a brimful of his joi de experience on screen. After being pitted against the numero uno comic actor of Bollywood, we must admit he held his own stead and how! He has once again surprised us with his effortless, natural and excellent comic timings. Must say Salman has mastered the art of comedy, is his own ishtyle. And does he indulge in his mandatory act of taking off his shirt? Umpteen numbers of times! And he finally admits it in the film, mai toh isi mauka ke liye wait karta hun! And nah, we aren't complaining.

Lara was just about ok. Nothing about her stands out in the film, but dance steps, where she is looking more macho than her macho male star. But than, let's not blame her. She looks hot. But there is no real chemistry between Salman and her.

Katrina becomes a hapless victim in front of the able actor. But we must admit she is getting better by the day.

Director

Inspite of a new crop of filmmakers trying different comedies, David still remains the proverbial royal guard of comedies and hasn't lost any of his comic sense, plot or the knack of making successful comic flicks. Partner is a glaring example of it.

Music Partners

Sajid Wajid

Call it inspiring, plagiarism, or mere lifting of the tune, but Sajid Wajid's music is the USP of the film and probably the best so far this year. It's fast, funky, foot tapping and groovy, highly infectious and innovative, but the most interesting compliment for the duo is that nobody took a break for a smoke or coffee or even to go to the loo.

Our Analysis

David & Co might have begged, borrowed, or stolen the idea from director Andy Tennant's Hitch starring Will Smith and Eva Mendes, but the desi remake by our comedy king David Dhawan most definitely tickles our funny bone. He has used his tried and tested formula from his past movies, but when it comes to his two and half hour senseless mindless but total paisa vasool flick, we are more than willing to interrupt our disbelief and defy the logic. Now the big question, is Partner a mere copy of Will Smith starrer Hitch? Who cares? (alteast not the audiences) for them it's the sheer entertainment value that matters. If you are looking for a constant chuckle and whoop of laughter then leave your brains at home, office, restaurants or any other place, get your partner and head for the nearest cinema hall, because the three Partners, David, Salman and Govinda are here to take you on a two and half hour interrupted rollercoaster laughter ride.

Partner is a laugh riot!

Syed Firdaus Ashraf | July 20, 2007 14:40 IST

Partner is yet another David Dhawan laugh riot.

Inspired by the Will Smith-starrer Hitch, Partner, starring Salman Khan [Images] and Govinda, works wonderfully because of the chemistry between the two central characters.

Prem (Salman) plays a love guru, who gives advice to people who cannot win the hearts of the women they are in love with.

Enter Bhaskar (Govinda [Images]), who is in love with Priya (Katrina Kaif), who is worth Rs 1,000 crore.

Bhaskar asks Prem for some love advice. Prem turns dissuades him because he feels Priya will never fall for Bhaskar because of their financial disparity.

The way Govinda manages to convince him is a treat to watch. His comic timing, his dancing abilities -- despite of the evident flab -- makes you wonder why our film industry has ignored such a talented actor for the last four years.

Salman, on his part, plays the dude, and gives Govinda -- who seemed to have been overshadowed by Akshay Kumar [Images] in his last film Bhagam Bhag -- enough scope to perform.

I repeat, the actors have great chemistry -- you never feel one is trying to outdo the other.

Sajid-Wajid's music and the lyrics and dialogues by Sanjay Chhel make this film work even better. The one-liners are hilarious, and very original.

Katrina does not have much to do except smile.

Lara Dutta, who plays a reporter, clicks more pictures than writing stories. One wonders if she is a reporter or a photographer. Her chemistry with Salman is great, however, and it's time she gets her due like her contemporary, Priyanka Chopra [Images].

Among the film's low points is Rajpal Yadav's character, Chotta Don. It is an imitation of Shah Rukh Khan's [Images] Don. Later in the film, Yadav's character just disappears.

Also, the film's end is very abrupt.

But despite the shortcomings, you will not feel disappointed because you will have had a good laugh through most of the film. A must watch.

Rediff Rating: 3.5/5

By Martin D'Souza, Bollywood Trade News Network

Govinda teams back with David Dhawan in this Sohail Khan Produced film. Partnered by Salman Khan, Govinda shows some rustiness in the first few reels. You wonder if this is the same Govinda who effortlessly gave us hits like COOLIE NO 1. But once set, like a batsman who has got his eye in, he takes strike to show glimpses of the genius of old. And by the time the curtains come down, he re-establishes himself as an actor to reckon with in the comic genre.

It's not exactly a no-brainer as the script runs through the film holding the scenes together. In fact, it's entertaining and manages to raise quite a few laughs. There's Rajpal Yadav playing Chota Don; he performs his role with ease and endears himself to the viewers. There's also Suresh Menon as Kiran, Katrina Kaif's gay friend. But the surprise pack, I'd say is Salman Khan. With Govinda, he coordinates well to pull off some exceptional scenes with ease.
Costumes by Alvira Agnihotri and Choreography by the Bosco Ceasar duo are to the mark, so are dialogues by Sanjay Chhel. He uses the play on words to bring in subtle humour. The music too by Sajid Wajid can be bracketed in the top league.

It's all about Salman who is a Love Guru, dishing out gyaan to lovers in need of guidance to hitch their partner. Govinda is one such man who is in love with his boss, Katrina Kaif. He latches on to Salman, following him to Phuket as well, in the hope of learning the ropes of making his moves.

Lara Duta as the single mother, and a journalist working for a tabloid always on the look out for a scoop, once again comes up trumps. Katrina Kaif, has not much of a role, but in the few scenes that she is in, she holds her own. Katrina has worked on her figure and the toned, slimmed down look is any day better that the Akshay Kumar starrer HUMKO DEWAANA…

It's entertaining alright and viewers are bound to see Salman Khan in a very different light. Is it the Govinda magic that has rubbed off on Salman, or David Dhawan's directorial abilities? Whatever it is, if you are looking to 'Just Chill', grab your partner, and move on to the multiplex for some laughs. You won't exactly come back singing Chaiyaa Chaiyaa, but will definitely say, "Wah Wah Ramji, Jodi Kya Banayi".
