Some do's and don'ts you need to follow while watching PARTNER…
Lock your brains in the almirah, before you head for the nearby movieplex to catch this zany entertainer.
Don't look for logic. Don't ask questions. Don't raise eyebrows. .
Don't argue with what the master chef David Dhawan serves on your plate. .
  • Do carry some earplugs/earwax if you're allergic to noise. The cineplex will reverberate with high decibels of laughter, which could tax your ear-drums if you're overtly sensitive. .

Welcome to PARTNER, David Dhawan's new comic caper. It's stylish, it's crazier, it's a bigger entertainer than David's last two laughathons, MUJHSE SHAADI KAROGI and MAINE PYAAR KYUN KIYA. Making people laugh is an art and David has mastered this art over the years. Like wine, he has only matured with time.

Let's come straight to the point. PARTNER is for those seeking non-stop entertainment. It's targeted at those who swear by masala films. Those who want to get transported to a world of make-believe in those 2 hours. It's definitely not for those who actually know what to expect, but pretend to rubbish escapist cinema. Also, it's not for certain critics [looking for art cinema in a masala entertainer] whose star ratings are a much bigger joke than the one David Dhawan pulls off with lan. The film works, and works big time.

In a nutshell, if you're into escapist cinema, if you're looking for laughter unlimited, if you're curious to watch the bonding between Govinda and Salman Khan, if you're a big fan of David Dhawan movies, if you believe in shelling out Rs. 150 for a ticket and expecting entertainment worth Rs. 200, PARTNER is just for you!

Prem [Salman Khan] is a 'date doctor' who, for a fee, has helped hundreds of men woo the women of their dreams. In his childhood, he understood a woman's likes and dislikes in food, clothes or men. His aim is to help those men who like or love women, not to take them to bed.

The ultimate professional bachelor, Prem discovers that his tried and tested tricks are no match for Naina [Lara Dutta], the one woman he truly loves, who works for a newspaper as a journalist.

He comes across Bhaskar [Govinda], who is in love with Priya [Katrina Kaif], the rich and famous daughter of a tycoon [Dilip Tahil]. Prem helps Govinda find his lady love and eventually also finds a soulmate in Naina.

Inspired by director Andy Tennant's likable Hollywood hit HITCH [2005; Will Smith, Eva Mendes, Kevin James, Amber Valletta], PARTNER is a true-blue David Dhawan film. It's glossy, has some stunning visuals, boasts of very catchy and hummable music and of course, hardly has any tense moment in those 16 reels.

What works is the casting of the two characters, who're as dissimilar as chalk and cheese. Although the romantic portions have the right chemistry between Salman and Lara and Govinda and Katrina, the USP is undoubtedly the terrific bonding between Salman and Govinda, whose on-screen escapades take the film to dizzier heights. Besides, the witty one-liners [Sanjay Chhel] are another ace that has the viewer in splits. The dialogues are truly funny and actually accentuate the impact of every sequence.

Any 'hitch'es? Yes, there's one! The track that leads to the misunderstandings in the climax looks unwarranted. Writer sahib [screenplay: Yunus Sajawal, David Dhawan], this track [Rajat Bedi, Aarti Chhabria] compels you to break into a yawn. Also, it adds to the length of the enterprise. But the subsequent portion [Govinda's honeymoon travails] is rip-roaringly funny.

David Dhawan gets it right yet again. He's on familiar ground and like a seasoned cricketer knows the game inside out. He hits a boundary yet again. Sanjay Chhel's dialogues are superb. Sajid-Wajid make a terrific comeback, with every song having the stamp of a chartbuster embossed on it. Even their picturizations [choreography: Bosco-Caesar] are excellent. Cinematography [Johny Lal] is first-rate. The film bears an opulent look all through. Costumes of Salman and Govinda [Alvira Khan Agnihotri] are stylish.

The question is, who steals the show? Actually both! Salman performs like never before. Sure, he looks dapper [one compliment he's heard umpteen times], but he packs in a solid punch whenever he's on screen. His fans will only multiply with this film. Govinda sets the screen blazing with an incredible performance. Although the actor has featured in a few films after a hiatus [BHAGAM BHAG, SALAAM-E-ISHQ], PARTNER is his comeback film. He has the viewer eating out of his hands actually. Those who felt that he's a spent force will have to eat back their words.

Lara Dutta looks gorgeous and pairs off very well with Salman. Katrina Kaif looks gorgeous and pitches in a natural performance. Rajpal Yadav is really funny. Puneet Issar is alright. Dilip Tahil is okay. Suresh Menon is excellent. Child artiste Ali Haji is wonderful. His confidence level is astonishing!

On the whole, PARTNER is a winner all the way. This one's a laugh-riot that will have the viewers laughing in the aisles and its distributors, laughing all the way to the bank. A sure-shot 'Hit'.

IndiaFM recommends Partner. A must watch movie.

By IndiaFM News Bureau, July 17, 2007 - 17:45 IST

If you were disappointed that Govinda was just relegated to being a second fiddle in Bhagam Bhag, Salman Khan wasn't that effective in Salaam-e-Ishq and director David Dhawan wasn't at his best in his last few attempts, there is one answer to all of them - Partner.

Partner is special for reasons more than one.

* Firstly because it brings together the most dependable team of Govinda and David Dhawan when it comes to comedy in Hindi cinema, after 4 years (their last film together was Ek Aur Ek Gyarah in 2003)

* Secondly because it brings together a fresh pairing of Govinda and Salman Khan whose combined chemistry remains untapped so far despite they came together a couple of times earlier.

* Thirdly because the leading lady Katrina Kaif has been paired opposite Govinda and not Salman Khan as one would have expected, which makes the partnership all the more interesting.

Is that all? No, there's much more to Partner. IndiaFM was exclusively invited for a special screening of Partner last night and after having our stomach ripped off from extreme doses of laughter, we would strongly recommend movie lovers to fix an appointment with Love Guru Prem this Friday and take your Partner along.

Prem, of course as the name implies, is played by Salman Khan who is a Love Guru in the film giving out tips to Govinda to woo Katrina with whom he is madly in love with. Of course like any other David Dhawan film you are strongly advised to leave your brains behind so that you can laugh without a second thought, nonstop for 150 minutes.

The film spoofs everything from Don (played by Rajpal Yadav), Aamir Khan from Rang De Basanti to Sholay. David doesn't even spare himself with satirical takes on his own films where Govinda shows dhinchak steps to Salman through the notorious number Sarkailo Khatiya (Raja Babu) and Salman teaches Govinda to groove better by dancing to Just Chill (Maine Pyaar Kyun Kiya) - both numbers being from Dhawan's earlier hits.

The scene where Govinda meets Katrina's friend Kiran is hilarious since this Kiran is not a girl but a gay played by Suresh Menon. The gay act continues with even Govinda getting into a drag as a gay in a wedding scene. Sanjay Chhel's humour-soaked one liners are awesome turning out to be a major highlight of the film.
The animation introducing Salman Khan is awesome and the end credits roll on with the 'by now popular' Govinda-Salman Khan dance act from IIFA. Director David Dhawan can be seen as a bystander in one of the scenes. But off screen he is outstanding gaining back all the credence and proving why he is titled as the comedy king in Bollywood.

This is in true terms the perfect comeback for the comic genius Govinda who is at his hilarious best. And with Salman the combo is 1 + 1 = 3.

So book your tickets in advance for this Friday and don't forget that we recommended this movie to you.

Film Review: Partner

By Sanjay Ram
19 July 2007, 12:43 PM

Film: Partner

Director: David Dhawan

Producer: Sohail Khan and Parag Sanghvi

Global Distributor: Eros International

Cast: Salman Khan, Govinda, Lara Dutta, Katrina Kaif, Rajpal Yadav, Aarti Chabria, Deepshikha, Rajat Bedi, Suresh Mennon

Keep your brains in the jar and lock it in a safe; that is possibly the best way you can enjoy the film, Partner. Filled with tons of antics and witty lines the film is not for the weak hearted and frowning faces.

The plot is almost like that of the will smith starrer Hitch. Love guru Prem (Salman Khan) is the best in the job of fixing people up with their ideal partners. Of course that until a practically impossible, Mr. all wrong, middle class Bhasker (Govinda) approaches him for help with wooing Priya (Katrina Kair), an industrial heiress. While Prem is working hard at helping Bhasker with his love, he falls for Naina, a single mother (Lara Dutta).

All ends well, but then, a movie such as this is no fun without a whole lot of confusion and misunderstanding. So following is a whole lot of problem solving and one funny chota Don (Rajpal Yadav), who is inconsequential to the film.

The thing is if one wanted to rip apart the film, they could very well do so with the million odd inconsistencies the film possesses. Like including pointless characters who have nothing to do with the story and jumping locations without establishing them (Phuket to Dubai to Mumbai, god knows where the characters are located). But then you'd miss the entire point of watching the film; that of being a non stop entertainer from start to finish.

Everything contained in the film leads to promoting the two lead characters and their larking about. The dialogues are well written and the actions only enhance them. The story, you will see, is like visiting your grandmother far away. They do so little of it, but in the process they manage to get you cheery, and thus there is no complaining.

Though the location is nowhere close to being established in any scene, what is captured is remarkable. The camerawork, cinematography and editing all come together to make one helluva film that holds your attention. The characters are human and with being human come a whole lot of impromptu gestures. Pairing Salman opposite Govinda allows for a whole lot of antics and gestures that seem spontaneous and this is exciting to watch.

There are so many levels the film scores on, besides the side-splitting actions. The music is great and comes exactly at places where the film slows down in pace, thus getting it back on track. The styling of each actor is true to their character and is striking, which results in each actor looking their best till date. What is most remarkable about this film, which makes it incomparable to any other film, is that in spite of being irrational it provides a great cinematic experience.

While the styling has the actors looking their best till date, the performances aren't so. Clearly Govinda cake walked through the entire film and has delivered a great performance. Salman conjures up some great funny expressions, proving he is just as good as comedy as he is in the others. As a pair, they carry the film, without you questioning a thing.

It is the ladies who do a so-so job at delivering great performances. Dutta does great until a point and then fails to elevate her character. Kaif who looks dazzling in the film, has little to do and thus an actual performance is really not seen. Yadav as Chota Don is funny, but then the character's inconsistency is not just limited to the film, but the laughs he generates as well. Then there is Bedi, Chabria and Deepshikha in one minute appearances, none of them stand out.

Questioning its Box office do is foolishness in itself. Partner has enough comedy in it to sail through good collections. Besides the star cast who will draw in a good amount of crowd, the excessive marketing will prove to be an added plus.

The king of comedies, David Dhawan has done it again with Partner. Its two thumbs and up for this film, laugh while you are at it.

Rating: Excellent

Sienna, Kat: Drab vs fab

White Is Right: Katrina Kaif BLACK OUT: Sienna Miller

We caught up with Katrina Kaif after she returned to the city post a hectic shoot schedule in London.

Kat was seen at a special screening of Partner on Wednesday, organised for underprivileged children at Cinemax, along with Sienna Miller.

We have to say that Kat, clad in a simple white dress, looked far more stunning and stylish than Sienna, who felt she could let it all hang out in drab digs since she's in India and nobody cares.

And she's right. We don't. Give us our desi actresses any day!
