Play on: Mukul Dev
Pic Rane Ashish

These days, Mukul Dev has a new passion — his guitar. Since the last few weeks, the actor has been taking lessons to play a six-string acoustic guitar.

"I played bass guitar during my schooldays, when we would do heavy metal songs. However, it's the acoustic guitar that has me hooked these days. I think it's the sound of the guitar that drew me to it. Nothing compares to an unplugged version of a song, accompanied on guitar by a good player," he says.

Mukul hasn't given himself a deadline to learn the instrument, but wants to be able to play John Lennon's Imagine in three weeks. "I have a person who comes and teaches me how to play. I also have a friend who takes time off when he's at my place. I have John Lennon's Imagine on my mind and I want to learn it really soon."

'70s obsession

Dev is obsessed with music from the 1970s. "Pink Floyd, Bob Dylan, Dire Straits - these are the guys who worshipped the guitar and made it into an instrument that creates magic. Of course, no one can recreate those sounds, but I want to learn Floyd's Wish you were here. That song is amazing."

Is it tiring, playing for long hours? "You have to know how to use your fingers. The coordination between your fingers and how you place them on the strings is something that takes time. There are times when at the end of the session, my fingers are aching with pain, but I guess that's the sacrifice one has to make."

For me

Does Dev want to impress anyone after he masters the instrument? "No, I am doing it for my own sake. I am a hardcore music buff and I think if you take any song and play it acoustic on the guitar, it gives a different feel altogether."

Does he plan to sing along with his tunes? "I have to admit that I am not a good singer, but I can try and provide good music to a good singer." Even though at the moment, Dev can play only the basic notes, he is confident of mastering the tunes he in a few weeks. "Guitar is my current obsession and I am not letting go of it easily," he exults.
