Dare to dance to Akshay Kumar's tune

Khiladi Kumar is back as the host of a new reality show titled Dare 2 Dance, which will push the boundaries of participants with daring acts and will strive to make them better dancers

Recently, during a reality show announcement in the capital the organisers mentioned that currently in Bollywood the only actor who has managed to churn out a profit of a whopping Rs 200 crore in the box-office in past five years is none other than Akshay Kumar which makes him one of the top profit-makers in the industry. Akshay, who has created magic on silver screen, is now being roped to generate moolah for the small screen as well. The versatile actor was recently in the capital to announce his association with a new reality TV show called Dare 2 Dance on Life OK channel.

Through this reality show Akshay, who has previously hosted reality show Khatron ke Khiladi, aims to hunt for trained dancers who will do daring dance acts in dangerous circumstances. The show will be aired in September, and to shoot this ambitious project Akshay and his trained team will be flying to Cape Town, South Africa.

Akshay, who is returning to television after a long hiatus says he borrowed the concept of the reality show from his recent visit to his son's school on sports day.

He said, "We want to challenge the trained dancers to prove their talent in adverse conditions. I'd be hosting and mentoring the choreographers throughout the show and this won't be like a regular reality show with three judges and elimination in each round. We wanted to take dance outside the studios and challenge our participants with extreme conditions."

The 46-year-old actor, who raises son Aarav and daughter Nitara with wife Twinkle Khanna mentioned that a recent incident gave him an idea about the elimination process for this show. "When I visited my son's school for sports day, I saw that children who were not able to win were given more chances to excel. They were encouraged continuously to give their best, so we decided that instead of eliminating the participants we will train them and make them give their best shot," said the actor.

Speaking about the challenges for the participants, Akshay revealed, "There will be 10 choreographers from worldwide, who'd challenged in every episode to do a daring dance act. For example, they might be asked to dance on ice or at a height of 6000 feet. The level of dare would be increased from level one to level 6."

Akshay also said that this show is not an adaptation of any international reality show, but is an original idea that will leave the viewers thrilled. "The 16 episode series would be shot entirely in Cape Town. Along with the dancers, I will also shake a leg. I won't keep it comfortable for myself. Before giving the task to the contestants, I would go and would try it out first," concluded the actor.

http://www.indiantelevision.com/television/tv-channels/gecs/akshay-kumar-to-host-and-mentor-on-life-ok-s-dare-2-dance-140726

NEW DELHI: After getting celebrities to do stunts in Khatron ke Khiladi, Bollywood's daredevil actor Akshay Kumar is now going to find trained and famed dancers who will struggle to manage and survive on the dance floor.

Kumar will be the anchor and the mentor on the new dance show, Dare 2 Dance', which will air on Life OK from September, every weekend.

The reality programme will see the dancer perform in challenging venues rather than on a stage or a set. One would dance on a narrow wall or even under water. Kumar will first demonstrate the format to each contestant in the dance format with a commitment of a first of its kind' show.

Produced by SOL Productions, it is open to trained dancers from across the globe rather than just celebrities. There will no audience votes, and the elimination will be done in a unique form. He and two other personalities will form the jury. "Taking a cue from my son's Sports Day function, I have decided that no participant will be eliminated after just one failure, but will be given another chance," says Kumar.

Life OK general manager Ajit Thakur informs that around 30 per cent of the budget of the series will be spent on marketing. Since there will be several foreign participants, apart from advertising on channels, newspaper, hoardings and radio announcements, the social media will be used heavily to reach the viewers overseas.

The contestants will be challenged to prove their mettle as Extreme Dance Ke Heroes' in a hope to rise above all odds. Thakur reveals that many had walked out of the show after being told of the challenges.

He adds, "Kumar has successfully managed to challenge the status quo with his constant need to push the envelope and move beyond the common. It was this need to challenge the norms and do something different that brought us together. "

To provide the right kind of setting, the entire series of sixteen episodes will be shot in and around Cape Town in South Africa.

Asian Age (Delhi edition) | July 30 2014

My mother means the world to me. She is somebody whom I look upon, respect and aspire to be like. In short, she is my role model.

She has always supported me throughout my life. When nobody in my family was in the favour of my coming to Mumbai and pursuing my passion for acting, my mother with everyone and told me to follow my dreams.

She has always been there in my high and low phases of life. There is not a single decision I take without seeking her prior permission. It may sound cliched, but all the credit of my success goes to my mother.

Supernaturally natural

Actor Rithvik Dhanjani is currently portraying the role of a werewolf in MTV's supernatural show, Fanaah

At a time when all things supernatural on tube were limited to ridiculously dressed witches' and wizards' trying to either mesmerise children with a magic crystal ball or scaring them away with a face that held endless layers of pancake, came a first-of-its-kind show, Pyaar Ki Yeh Ek Kahaani, that acquainted the audience with fiction with a difference.

A vampire whose personality endeared rather than alienated and a werewolf whom girls chased instead of the other way round. That werewolf soon metamorphosed into the ideal son when he went on to do the daily soap, Pavitra Rishta. Well, if you still didn't get the hint, we are referring to Rithvik Dhanjani who, once again is back to doing what he does best. Portraying the role of a werewolf on-screen.

While throwing light on his character in MTV's Fanaah, he shares, "It is a supernatural show wherein I play a werewolf, Vidyut. The role is way beyond the realms of anyone's imagination. The character is constantly struggling between his human emotions and animal instinct. Such a concept has never been shown on Indian television yet."

Since Dhanjani has already been a part of a youth-based show along similar lines, we wonder why he chose to take up the show. "Vidyut's character challenged me as an actor. The genre of both shows might seem alike, but the storylines are poles apart. I instantly gave a nod to the role as I felt the character was beautiful in its own way," reveals he.

Rithvik takes us back in time and tells us why acting was meant to be for him. "Ever since I was 15 years old, acting was on my mind. I always desired to entertain people. When an actor graces the screen, he becomes immortal. He becomes God to people and holds within himself the power to make them laugh when he laughs and cry when he cries. Not every actor is capable enough to engage the audience in such a way, but I endeavoured to do that and perhaps, that became my driving force."

Dhanjani never once forgets that television gave him fame among the masses, but like most actors he too wants to recreate the magic of his talent on the silver screen. And why not, when he has got act' in an actor and moves that can give any professional a run for his money. He doesn't want to do films for the "heck of doing it" though. "I am not against mainstream cinema, but I think realistic cinema has its own charm. The character has to be meaningful. As an actor, I prefer a Rang De Basanti or a Shahid over out-and-out commercial entertainers."

Having experimented with youth-based shows, reality shows and dailysoaps, Rithvik has honed his acting as well as dancing skills to the T. "Reality shows came my way due to the exposure I got through the drama-based show and youth-based shows that I had up my sleeve. I can't choose one over the other. It is an amalgamation of all three genres that proved to be a game changer for me in a pleasant manner," quips the actor.

He says that he hasn't had it easy, but his firm belief in himself landed him where he always envisioned being. He isn't focused on upping the TRP game, rather he believes in setting a benchmark that will place him in a different league altogether.
