Chapter 3: 7 x 2 pheres

Kanya looks into Ranbir's eyes and sees……

Happiness. Pure and total happiness. Or so she thinks. She smiles to herself, believing everything is all right. However, she missed the flicker of strained determination. Everyone was blissfully happy, jaise ki saare qayanat mein dhundne se bhi itni khushi ke pal nahi milte.

Ranbir's dictionary:
Shaadi: A horrible mistake. Zor se brakes par paun dhabao aur jaldi U-turn le lo!!!

As they stood up to make the pheres around the fire, Ranbir counted them off.

1. for the sake of my sanity
2. for the hate guru that I once was
3. for my happiness before Kanya
4. for the freedom of bachelorhood
5. for the mukti from domestic responsibilities
6. for the level of my awesomeness as a hate guru
7. for my sanity….wait. I already said that. Oh God! Abhi se pagal ho raha hoon!

However, Kanya counted them off in a slightly different way.

1. I will love you always, no matter what.
2. I will be faithful to you always.
3. I will put you before others and myself always.
4. I will stand by you in times of difficulty.
5. I will take care of you when you are hurt.
6. I will never let you do anything wrong.
7. I will never lie to you…
…she thought and smiled.

They turned to face each other to place the garlands around each other. Ranbir gently slid the fragrant band of love around Kanya's neck. She blushed.

R: (thinking) Wow, yeh kitni khoobsu- No Ranbir! Don't get distracted!

As she reached up to put the garland around Ranbir's neck, he leaned upward a little bit, trying to avoid it. Everyone giggled, thinking he was just pulling her leg. She blushed furiously and tried again. Again he stood taller. Finally she caught him with it. Everyone clapped.

An hour later…

Na jaane kabse main tumhari intezaar mein behti hoon. Ranbir, aa ke mujhe apna bana lo.

Kanya sat on the bed, decorated in millions of flowers, in the dim light of the many tiny bulbs, illuminating the room. She sat, with the ghungat over her eyes, her eyes which were thirsting to see Ranbir come through the door. How long she had waited for her rajkumar to come and make her his. This was the moment which her mind, body and soul were waiting for anxiously. She remembered…everything. The first moment, when her eyes fell upon Ranbir, innocently, unsuspecting. Unsuspecting what had come to happen.

K: (thinking) Humari ek anokhi kahani hai. Mile kuch is tara (thinking about the first meeting with the gunda), Pyaar hua kuch is tara (remembering suhaag raat eyelock), izhaar hua kuch is tara (remembering the recent proposal),

She was cut off by the sound that she had been impatiently waiting to hear. The door opening. Her heart began to race so fast, she couldn't help but breathe heavily. Ranbir slowly walked in. He closed the door behind him and slowly locked it. Kanya's heart was racing and she had butterflies in her stomach. Ranbir moved towards the bed, never taking his eyes of Kanya.

He climbed on the bed and leaned in to her. He slowly, as if he could not believe he could, reached toward her ghungat. And lifted it.
