CHAPTER 1
Luna
My name is Luna. I am 15 years old. This may not be the first thing you hear from a stranger but I am different. I was as confused as you probably are. And I don't just mean the whole I-am-special-in-my-own-way kind of different. Different. From other people. I've always had this feeling like I don't belong anywhere. Not at school, which is a very elite, super private and expensive school, with other rich kids. The only reason I attend that school is because I have to be able to support my poor mother when I grow up. Not at home where I don't really do anything important, just hang around trying to think up something to do. My mom is gone all day and sometimes nights, so mostly I am at home alone. And certainly not with my friends, mainly because I didn't really have a lot.
You see, my father left us when my mom was pregnant. So, therefore my mom works herself to death, but we're still pretty well off. You see, when my dad left, he apparently left some money behind for us and that's how my mom pays for my tuition and stuff. She never really told me any of this, not clearly anyway. I had to scrounge around and collect bits of information myself and put the pieces together. Also, my mom never told me why dad really left. Secretly I presume that as soon as he found out that I was on the way, he couldn't handle the pressure and left. Which is weird, because that must mean he didn't love my mother enough. Or me. But then why did they get married in the first place?
I could go on and on about this for a long time, which is usually what I did when I'm not sleepy and I'm staring up at my ceiling all night. That was another weird thing about me, I don't sleep. All right, I officially declare myself crazy. I just can't figure out why. Maybe I'm an alien. My mother would tell me to try to get some sleep and made me go to bed around midnight or later after watching tv or etc. I would just lie there and stare at the ceiling and try to figure out what the hell is wrong with me all night long. Now do you believe me when I say I'm different, and in my life right now all I want to do is to be normal, like any other teenager in the world.
***
My mom was at the hospital, pulling an all-nighter today, and I was walking north, home after school. I had only a million home works today and planned on finishing it by 8, so I could go to the carnival that was in town. I didn't even know this, until Connor mentioned it. You see, he was my only friend. He was well-liked by everyone at our school and had decent grades too. He asked me to go with him. If anyone asked him who his best friend is, he would say Luna. Which I don't really get, because he has a lot of friends that he hangs around with, but he doesn't make me feel totally worthless either. We've been friends ever since we could talk. Our parents were good friends, so I guess that explains that. But he's a decent guy.
Anyway, I was listening to my ipod, when I saw something out of the corner of my eye. Something, I didn't get a good look at it, but something evil. I just felt it in my blood. A dark shadow? I paused my song and looked around. I mean really looked and there was nothing there. I shuddered and started to walk faster. Okay, I was seriously freaking myself out. Not everyone in the world is a freak like me. I was just plain paranoid. So then this time someone seriously did sneak up on me, but it was only Connor.
"Jesus, you scared the hell outta me!" I yelled at him
"Hey, babe, sorry, you just looked like you were really spacing out so I couldn't help but do that," he said with a devilish grin. This was another thing about him. He talked to me like I was his girlfriend, using such words as babe and things, which seriously creeps me out, but I know that he can't help but say those things, because that's probably how he talks to every girl, iono.
"What are you doing here? You live all the way on the other side of the school," I said to him
"Oh you know, just decided since your mom was out the whole night, we could hang out at your house. Not a bad idea, huh?" he asked me like that was the greatest plan ever. He grinned at me and put his arms around my shoulders and we walked to my house.
***
"Wait, you're kidding, right?" I asked him, incredulous.
He looked around, "Um, no, I'm dead serious,"
"No way, if my mom finds out, I'm dead,"
"But that's the thing, she won't find out. She won't even be here. All-nighter, remember?"
"I don't know, maybe I should call and ask her? And why don't you use your house?"
"Oh babe, come on, please? Do this for me? My folks are home, so my house is out of the question." and then he made a puppy face, which was a real talent I have to tell you, he looks soo adorable when he makes this face. Just like a little kid. A face which you could not say no to. You see, he was asking me to throw a party. Yea, I'm serious. But to you, that probably doesn't sound like a big deal, but we're talking about me, here. The weird lonely child, with a guy friend so popular, it's unreal. And now he was telling me to invite as many people as possible.
"What do you mean? How many people?"
"Come on, your house is huge, we can easily fit a couple hundred kids in here," he said and grabbed our home phone and dialed someone. You see, my mom's one dream was to have a big house with a garden and everything. No matter what, she wanted it and she got it. Our house was 2 stories and had 4 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, a kitchen, a living room, dining room, basement, a garage for two cars and a big attic. Yea, all those rooms for just the two of us. And half of them stood empty for no one to use. Sometimes, when Aunt Clara came, she stayed in one of the spare bedrooms.
"Um, okay, but I don't know anyone's number and besides, I don't know half of the people in our grade!" I told him after he got off the phone. "And they probably don't know me,"
"Exactly, so it's the perfect time to make some more friends," he told me in a tone that made me think he was annoyed with me and him being my only friend.
"Wait, I think I get this, you're only doing this so I can make friends and then you'll be rid of me, aren't you?" I asked him in a quite tone. "You feel you have to hang around me all the time, just cause we were once friends and our parents are friends. Well, you can call the whole thing off and just tell me the truth. To my face. Don't beat around the bush. And don't feel sorry for me, either. I don't want your pity."
He looked at me like I was crazy. Then he pulled me into a hug. I tried to push him away, but he was too strong.
"Why would I do such a thing? I wouldn't want to get rid of you even if you begged me. Never." he said and ruffled my hair, like I was a kid. "This party is only so we can have some fun. Lately you've been very quiet. Where's the fun Luna I used to know?"
"Hey!!! I'm still fun, just these last days I haven't been quite myself," I told him and that was that.
He decided to make the calls and I just watched tv, while Connor made all the arrangements. It was already 6 o'clock. And I wasn't even halfway done with my stupid homework. Just then mom called to make sure I was ok and asked me what I was doing later. I told her I was going to the carnival. A big fat lie. Oh well. How would she find out about this anyway?
People just started showing up around 8, by then it was pretty dark outside. And boy was I underdressed. I'll just leave it at that. A couple of guys and two girls showed up first and the guys slapped hands with Connor and I was introduced to them. Trey, Walker, John, Logan, Marla and Daney.
"Hey, aren't you a pretty one!" one of the guys said and everyone laughed. I tried to come up with a smart comeback, but I didn't do well under pressure. I just excused myself and went upstairs. I locked up my mom's bedroom and went into my own room to change into something decent. I ended up just wearing my ripped jeans and a tank top. I wasn't really into parties that much. Sure, I was invited sometimes, but I showed and ended up wondering all over the place. I looked out that window, and seriously people were just pouring into our house. I saw two guys coming in with a keg. Oh great! Girls in their high heels and skirts and mainly their boyfriends came in. Football players with all of their 200 pounds of muscles showed up. Music was already blasting loud enough I'd bet people could hear it all the way in China. Suddenly, someone opened my door and came in. I thought it was someone looking for a bathroom, but it was Connor.
"Hey, I've been looking for you all over the place! What are you doing here?" he was holding something in a plastic cup. He came over and pulled me downstairs. When I came down, I swear the place was so packed it wasn't even funny. 50 cent or some other music was on and people were dancing. Or trying to anyway, when there was so little space. Connor went around saying "hey, you know Luna, this is her party" and I said hey so many times the word hey doesn't even make sense to me anymore. There were a couple of people that I talked to in school; not really my friends, but friendly enough.
And at some point, I remember enjoying myself, when Trey, one of the guys that I was introduced to, asked me to dance. It was like, 5 minutes, then I had to go to the bathroom, and when I came out again, he was dancing away with some other girl. Yeah, then right after they party had just started, I decided to leave. Why did I have to stay here, when I didn't really wanna be here? I thought, and went upstairs to put on my sweater. I was going to go to the carnival. When I went up to my room though, a guy and a girl were making out on my desk! Ag, and of all places on my desk!!!
"Out!!" I ordered them and the girl glared at me for having disrupted them. Jeez. I found my black sweatshirt and put it over my tank top. As I was coming downstairs, I saw someone throwing up all over our carpet! I was absolutely horrified. And this was my mother's favorite Persian carpet. Jeez, I was in so much trouble. Maybe, I should stay and watch over things, make sure none of these bozos took anything with them or broke anything. Then I heard the same annoying song that had been playing for the past 20 minutes, played again. Jeez, get some good songs the next you decide to come to a party, I thought to myself. Ah, forget it, I would just leave it to Connor. After all, it was basically his party. Just in my house.
***
I was walking away from the house and up Clover Street to the park where the Carnival was supposed to be. Since the park was really close, I decided to walk, instead of bicycling. Haha, I still ride my bicycle.
And sure enough there it was. Lights everywhere and there was a small roller coaster, some weird pirate ride and lots of booths and a caf place. I really liked it. On the way out, I had grabbed $20. I was slightly worried about my house and the party. But oh well. It's not like I had a choice. I was choosing which rides to go on first, when a hand tapped my shoulder. I turned around and there was a guy and a girl standing there, with their arms around each other. They were around 16 or 17, I guessed. Maybe even from our school.
"Hi," the girl said. She had long curly dark hair and cool red glasses. With stones on it, I think.
"We were wondering if you knew where a party around here was? A friend of mine from school invited me and I forgot the address but I'm pretty sure it's around here somewhere?" the guy said and he had an easy smile and a really unique wardrobe. He had on tight jeans, black converse, and a gray t-shirt. Also he had shoulder-length brown hair. Apparently one of those punk-rock guys. But, I've never seen him around school.
"You're kidding, right?" I said, wondering if they meant my party.
They stared. I stared back.
"Uh, ok," the girl said
"Actually, I know exactly where that party is," I told them with a smile to offer for being so stupid. "I'm Luna Jones," I told them and held out my hand.
"Hey, I'm Jamie and this is Lisa," the guy said and asked me again if I was from Vina Fields Academy. Yes I told them, and so were they. I was in 9th grade and they were in 11th. Great. So then I told them my house address and directions to how to get there. But I didn't mention that I am the one throwing the party.
I, then went on the roller coaster. Even thought it was a pretty small one, it was fun and I went on it twice. Then I had some french fries, twizzlers, which were my favorite candy, along with a pop. This was way better than some stinky old party. Finally, it was around 10 o'clock. I had won a huge tiger when I was at this small booth, where I had to shoot these targets and according to how many I got, there were prizes. Apparently the tiger was the best one. I held onto it now, as I lay on the grass, looking up at the sky. There were only a million stars, shining brighter than anything I've ever seen. Of course then there was the moon. I thought about how I was born on night with a full moon, and that's why mom named me Luna. I started to close my eyes and dream about my dad coming back and me seeing him for the first time. That's when someone sat down next to me and said hey.
I opened my eyes and it was that Jamie dude.
"Hey," I said slowly, not sure what he was doing here. He smiles at me and said what a beautiful night it was.
"What are you doing here?" I asked him
"Ah, the party got boring and I found out a couple of things there that were a bit disturbing to me."
"Enlighten me," I said and offered him some of my twizzlers.
"Nah, I hate those things," at which my eyes widened and he grinned. "First of all, I found out that when I took off my jacket, someone had thrown up on it and it really reeks," he made a face at this, but kept going, while I laughed. " then, I find my girlfriend making out with this other dude from lacrosse," he sounded sad when he got to this part.
"Lisa? I'm really sorry about that," I told him
He was quiet for what seemed like million years. I thought maybe I should say something funny, but this didn't seem like the moment.
"You loved her," I whispered
He looked at me and gave me a sad smile
"I guess so. But she was the only person who understood me and accepted me for really who I am, you know? And I really did love her."
"You told her that you love her, right?"
"She's not the type that gets attached too much, you know? She knows that it's only high school and knows better than falling in love in high school."
"So you think she only... um, broke up with you because she was afraid of falling in love with you?"
"Her parents are rich and really strict. She's an only child. She's the one that's going to carry off their family name, you know? So she knows not to screw up. And to not get involved with someone like me. I'm just a punk. She's expected to go to Harvard, marry a doctor and have a perfect family with 2 kids or something." he paused there for a while, "I guess she couldn't tell me in person that she wanted us to be over."
"So you didn't tell her, because you were scared she might not say it back to you." I looked at him and I saw a single tear sliding down his cheek.
He quickly wiped it away, cleared his throat and said he didn't wanna talk about it. He forced a smile. I knew it was forced because that easy smile of his was gone and I noticed that when he smiled for real there was a dimple on his left cheek. And that was gone too. "Anyway, the third thing I found out was that the person throwing the party is you." he said simply and looked at me as if he waited for me to say something.
"Um, yea, I guess, but you know, it really wasn't my idea. I'm not into parties and stuff like that. It was all Connor's idea." it took me a while to respond to because of the way he changed the subject like it was no big deal. A wave of sadness washed over me.
"Your boyfriend?" he raised an eyebrow
"A friend who's a boy," I told him. Then I tried to get back on the subject of Lisa, but he just waved away and I got it that he seriously didn't wanna talk about it and I didn't wanna upset him more.
"So, why aren't you at the party? I mean, it is at your house,"
"It's really more like Connor's party, but at my house. Besides I really wanted to come to the carnival," I showed him what I won. He looked like he was about to say something really deep, like quote Shakespeare or something, but instead it was something like this
"That is so incredibly... lame," and we burst out laughing.
Anyway, right then my cell phone rang and it was Connor asking me where the hell I was and I told him I was at the Carnival and then he demanded I come back to the party and I told him no thanks.
"Darn thing about phones, you can't see me make a puppy face. Dammit," he cursed again. I laughed and told him not to worry. I hung up.
'I'm gonna get a soda, you want one?" I asked Jamie and he said he'll come along. We ended up having a blast together, playing and stuff. Which sounds really childish, I know, but it was still fun and nothing is going to change that. When it was around 11, he walked me home, telling me it wasn't safe for me to walk alone at night. The party was still on with even more people now.
"Great," I muttered
"Oh darn, you wanted to get some sleep, huh? Well, I can tell you, this party is going to continue till 2 or 3." he said, with a sympathetic smile.
"Actually, I don't sleep," I said, without thinking. His smile faded and he asked me what I meant. I regretted opening my mouth.
"No, I just mean, I don't sleep this early, haha," I was able to save it, thank god. For a second, he looked like he didn't believe me, then he just looked relieved. Maybe he thought I was an alien.
I asked him to come in but he took one long look at my house and probably at Lisa who we could see was dancing inside with some guy and he declined. I didn't wanna push it so we said our goodbyes. So then I just ended up going inside, cause obviously I didn't wanna wait outside till 2 or something by myself. The music was louder than ever and apparently someone took the liberty of changing the song. There was beer everywhere and everywhere you looked there were people dancing.
Anyway, I went to my room, to make sure there was nobody was messing with my stuff. And guess what I found out? The exact same people as before, in my room. Jeez.
"Out!!!" I ordered them even louder. Now they both glared at me.
CHAPTER 2
Jamie
She had striking violet eyes. Yeah, seriously purple pupils. Gosh, I had never seen anything like that before in my life. Just ask yourself, have you ever seen a girl with purple eyes? When I asked her if they were contacts, she said no. That's the weird part. And her pale, pale ivory complexion. I felt almost like I could see through her or something. Those long dark lashes. She also said she doesn't sleep. But I'm sure she was joking about that one. Anyway, after walking her home I just left. Seeing Lisa with some other guy was too much for me. We said our goodbyes.
"Hope to you see you soon," I said at which she smiled and waved goodbye.
Lisa and I are so done. It's all over. I suppose I've seen it coming. I was just in denial. She hinted about taking a break or something but I just didn't wanna see it. And now it's over. Goddammit, I loved her!!!
But this new girl. Luna. Even her name sounds pretty. But how can I love Lisa and be attracted to another girl? God, I'm a mess. I kept thinking about the first time Lisa and I met and the time we first saw Luna and I kept analyzing what went wrong in our relationship. God, maybe this is how people get admitted into an insane asylum. These were my thoughts as I fell asleep on the couch while watching a remake of the Invasion of the Body-Snatchers.
* * *
"Oh damn," I said as I realized that I overslept and was late to school. I quickly changed my clothes and went to the bathroom. Luna. Her face suddenly interrupted my thoughts and I smiled at that. Gosh, what is wrong with me?? I only met her yesterday. I couldn't stop thinking about her. Oh hell, besides she was only 15. And what about Lisa? Was there any chance of us getting back together? Maybe she would call now, like she always used to. I was never late to school, because she always called in the morning to wake me up and today I overslept. My first day without a girlfriend and I'm already such a mess. Damn. I was so late. Mr. Parker would give me a hard time about it, as usual. I ran outta my house straight to school.
