The Strange Path
RECAP: "I wonder where are they all?", Ali asked, thinking that it's been almost two hours since he have seen any of them. "Let's go and check!", Aarzo said as she starting walking out of the room. Ali just gave a slight nod and followed her.
Chapter: 19
The sun was setting itself down the west as the night was coming along. The sky was filled with sprinkles of different shades here and there as if someone has just thrown a bucket full of different colours overā¦..some spaces transformed to shades of orange while other parts changed to a shade of purple, complementing the fading light blue coloured sky. The scene was so pure and beautiful, one of a kind.
Aarzo walked with quick steps through the hall with Ali, who was walking slowly as a turtle behind her. She could not help but wonder about his sudden laziness but kept quite, trying to focus on her path. Her thoughts were again drifted to the othersā¦..where were they? She hasn't heard a single noise, or any kind of disturbance from either Shiza, Afia or even Zohaib from the past few hoursā¦ā¦ā¦
"Ali! Stop!", she whispered lightly. "What? Say it loudlyā¦..i can't really hear youā¦ā¦you knowā¦..", he said casually, still walking towards her. "You silly! STOP!", she said again, but this time using her hands to signal him. "Hey!! I can understand youā¦.stop the sign language dude!", he said still in his jovial mood, not noticing the nervousness on Aarzo's face. "Ali please!! This is no time for jokesā¦ā¦.I ā¦..I am so worried here and you are just busy cracking your silly jokes!!", she said, trying to hold back the hot tears in her eyes. "Heyā¦.what happened?.....Aaruā¦ā¦tell meā¦..are you okay??", Ali asked quite worried from her frightened tone. "Shhhshhh!!! Just listenā¦.can you hear the ā¦ā¦theā¦.those noises??", she asked, putting her index finger on her lips. Here Ali was found confused; he tried listening to any kind of weird sounds but there was nothingā¦..to hear to. "Aaru! I think it's just nothingā¦you are worried for no reason..", he tried to calm her down. Before she could say something, a loud noise barged in, echoing in the hallway. Aarzo quickly held Ali's arm in fear and closed her eyes tightly. It was a sound of something crashing and hitting the hard floor. Ali was also disturbed now but was determined to go and check at this very moment. "Aaruā¦ā¦.don't get scaredā¦ā¦I know it's nothingā¦..c'mon open your eyes so that you can walk..", he said consolingly. "No! I won't!.....Ali pleaseā¦don't leaveā¦.I am too scared to open my eyesā¦..please just stay hereā¦..I am very scaredā¦..please Ali", she pleaded to him, still holding tightly onto his arm. "Okay. Okay. We will go there like thatā¦..just hold on very tight so you don't trip yourself over somethingā¦..", he said as both of them headed towards the living room, getting out of the dim lit hall.
"Afi!! Afia!!! Where are you??.....Anybody here??......", Ali shouted out but it felt as if nobody heard him as his voice just echoed around and returned back to him. "C'mon guys! It's no time to prank ā¦..okay? Where are you all? Zohaib? Shiza?", he tried harder this time, calling them ever so loudly. The lights went out all of a sudden and darkness spread over each and every corner. "uh-ohā¦ā¦these lights also had to go out now!!......urghhhā¦.", Ali said irritatingly as he tried to find the nearby couch so both him and Aarzo can atleast take a seat and just relax. "Ali? What happened to the lights?", Aarzo asked as she heard him cursing under his breath but when he didn't replied back , curiousness took over her. She opened her eyes slowly, but found no difference; it was the sameā¦.pitch black darkness all over. "Sorry Aaruā¦..I didn't heard what you saidā¦..", Ali interrupted her thoughts. "I think the lights went outā¦.I hope it's not the same switch board problem like before!", he added, leading her way as she was still clinging onto his arm. Soon they found the nearest sofa and sat there all tired out and frustrated, as if returning from a hectic journey.
"Ali! Is that you?", a voice came from behind. "ummmā¦.Shiza?", he asked trying to make out the person standing a feet away from the couch, in this obscurity. "Yup!....it's me!!", Shiza replied cheerfully and at the very moment the lights came back. "Shiz..couldn't you come a little earlierā¦so we wouldn't have to wait this long for these lights!", Aarzo said a little frustrated from waiting in the darkness for the past couple of minutes.
"Where were you guys? We called out your names for like a thousand times and no reply from any of you?", Ali atlast asked, giving suspicious glances to Shiza, Afia and Zohaib, who were sitting around in the spacious, lavishly decorated living room. "Bhaiyya don't blame me haanā¦ā¦ā¦I was just talking to Papaā¦ā¦ā¦and then the call got disconnected so I had to go out ā¦ā¦..in the garden area ā¦ā¦because of the signal problem.", Afia gave in her explanation. "What? Papa called and you didn't even thought to give your own brother atleast a minute to talk to his parentsā¦ā¦shame on Afi!.......I wanted to talk to Papa for so longā¦ā¦ā¦.it's all your fault Afi!!!", Ali whined like a little kid to his sister. "Sorry bhaiyya but your badā¦.as I finished the whole card talking to himā¦ā¦ā¦ā¦and there was only one card left for London callsā¦..tutututā¦..my poor bhaiyya!!", Afia replied teasing her brother more. "Afi!! Now don't talk to meā¦ā¦ā¦..and don't even ask me to bring you anything from outsideā¦ā¦I won't take any of your requests from now onā¦ā¦", he looked away, trying his best to show off some anger. "Ali bhaiyya I hope you are not angry with me ā¦ā¦. I was just helping Zohaib bhai with the switch board downstairsā¦ā¦to see the problem with the electric supplyā¦.", Shiza said defending herself. "Okay!! Cut it out both of you!! Stop acting like kids!", Zohaib said irritatingly, standing up to leave for his room. Both Afia and Ali gave each other deadly glances and stormed off in different directions as well.
"So I guess its just you and me... Ms. Aarzo!", Shiza said after a few minutes of silence. However, Aarzo seemed lost, thinking deeply about something. "Hey.....Madam Aaruā¦.I am talking to youā¦.", Shiza shook Aarzo, who was sitting beside her. "Ohh....sorry I didn't hear you..", Aarzo apologized, coming out of her thoughts. "Can I ask you something Aaru?", a serious Shiza asked. Aarzo nodded her head in a 'yes', giving her the required permission. "I know it's a bit early to ask......but.....are you......I mean.......are you comfortable with the decision my dad has taken for you?? I mean to say that are you happy/angry/mad/sad......about it? You can tell me without any hesitation........I will try my best to help you out in any way I can without being biased to my dad's decision!", Shiza said putting her arm around Aarzo, reminding her of their warm and affectionate friendship. Aarzo was lost of words for the first time by seeing the great bond of understanding these cousins have given to her with their friendship. She felt very lucky at this moment as tears of joy rolled down her face. Aarzo just smiled through those tears and embraced her dear friend in a tight hug whispering "thank you!" again and again.
It was a beautiful night tonight. The sky was filled with bright and shiny stars, twinkling on the dark black sky. The atmosphere was filled with refreshing light and slow winds. As much worse the conditions were outside at day time.....the night time was more peaceful and relaxing resembling the conditions Aarzo went through today.......
After Aarzo's heart warming conversation with Shiza, she felt a lot better and was determined to think through her decision of not leaving the house, once again. Her Bade pa and chachi called a couple of minutes ago, inquiring about her condition and informing that they will be traveling to another city to see a close relative and will be coming back in 2 days. All three girls: Shiza, Afia and Aarzo cooked happily in the kitchen and ate the dinner along with Ali and Zohaib. Now, all were busy in their own little activities with Shiza chatting on I-M with her friends in London. Afia was again lost in one of the Medical Sciences books from the bundle she has brought in her heavy bag. Zohaib was as usual in his room working on his mini laptop. And well Ali was still "upset" with Afia on the telephone conversation and therefore busied himself in watching football match on the tv, lying lazily on the couch, in the living room.
Aarzo was roaming around her room back and forth from the past few minutes, thinking over and over her decision. She was confused.....what should she do? She wanted to talk to someone at this moment who she can share all her thoughts to......but who? She has already troubled Shiza and Ali enough, she thought. "Who should I talk to? Afi?......No ā¦ā¦.she is busyā¦ā¦ā¦I don't want to disturb herā¦ā¦ā¦Zohaib bhai?......but I don't know if he's free or notā¦ā¦ā¦but the most important thing is I just don't want any arguments with himā¦.we have already encountered a lot of themā¦ā¦.but why do I feel that I should atleast ask his opinion on this?..........What should I do?", Aarzo sat on the corner of her bed dejectedly, holding her head. Shaking all the fears away, she stood up making a decision atlast.
*Knock* *Knock*
Aarzo hesitantly knocked on the closed door. A strong voice came from inside, permitting her to come in. She looked around the room.....it was simply a mess!! What have they done to this nice room? Disgusted, she walked around cleaning up the mess, without giving it another thought. Aarzo has always been an organized girl and she hated unorganized people especially when they interfere her way. She was muttering things to herself, complaining of this chaos in one of her favourite rooms. The person atlast looked up from his laptop screen for the first time, after she has entered the room. "Ummā¦.something wrong Aarzo?", Zohaib asked seeing an irritated Aarzo cleaning the room. She looked up frustratingly at him saying, "How can you guys live in such a messy room? God!!!......don't you know how unhygienic it is? Urghh......what have you both done to this room??" Zohaib just stared blankly at her, quietly listening to whatever she said as if he was getting scold by a teacher for a mischief. "Now why are you looking at me like that? I am not an alien by any chance okay?? Stop staring and comeā¦help me clean up!", she ordered without even thinking once on what she said. Zohaib obediently followed her orders as if he was cast under a spell and gave her a hand in cleaning. Aarzo looked guiltily at him, realizing what she actually had said in anger. "I ā¦ā¦ I am sorry ā¦.. I shouldn't have said all thatā¦ā¦.", Aarzo looked down awkwardly. "No. No. It's okay Aarzo! It's our faultā¦..we should have kept the room cleanā¦", Zohaib replied quickly.
"Soā¦..how come you are here? Anything important?", Zohaib asked sitting on his single bed, tired from the cleaning they did for approximately 20 minutes. "ummm......well.....I just wanted to discuss something with you......and take your advice on it....", Aarzo said sitting on Ali's single bed, placed opposite Zohaib's bed. She felt very uncertain all of a sudden as if all her courage has flown away.......making her nervous. "Okayā¦..so what's the matter?", he asked concentrating his attention on her. "What is happening to me? Why can't I tell him? Oh my God!! Help me!! I don't know what to doā¦... Why am I so nervous?", wondered Aarzo. She took a deep breath and exhaled it out as if trying to force all that nervousness out of her. "Zohaib! I mean Zohaib bhai....", she said biting her tongue. "I was thinking what should I do? I mean I don't want to leave this houseā¦but at the same time I can't live here all by myselfā¦..right? I know that what Bade pa has thought for me is right but my heart is just not ready to leave this place.....all the memories of my parents are captured here......it's their only reminder left with me! What should I do?", she sighed a big sigh of relief after saying out all her thoughts to one of her most trusted friends. He looked affectionately at her innocent face, with a million questions held in her eyes. "Hmmā¦See Aarzoā¦first of all memories cannot be kept alive by these non-living objectsā¦..memories is a precious gift that lies in your own heartā¦and believe me coming with us to London is the best decision for youā¦we are not saying you to leave this house foreverā¦..you can come to visit it anytime you wantā¦..IT IS YOURS! And afterall London will offer you one of the best education systemsā¦.so the decision is all in your benefit Aarzo! I hope you understand what I mean and take it in the right way!!!", Zohaib said coming to her and sat beside Aarzo, who was looking strangely at him.
"What happened?", he asked noticing her strange gaze on him. "No. Nothing. Ummā¦..Thanks!! for your adviceā¦ā¦. I thought that you ā¦ā¦ā¦.nevermindā¦", she said standing up to go. "Wait!", he said quickly which almost sounded as a whisper. "Yea?", Aarzo asked looking at him as she stopped in midway. "What did you thought?", he asked meeting her gaze. "About what?", she questioned and accidentally bit her tongue. "You were saying that you thought something.....before asking about my adviceā¦ummā¦.what was that?", he couldn't help but ask her about it. "Nothing...", she denied telling him anything. "Ohh!!!", he looked down disappointingly.
"Actually I thought that we will again land up in a baseless argument and I would end up getting no advice from you.....but it all happened opposite to what I was assuming! And I am extremely glad about it!", she said sitting beside him. Zohaib turned around surprised that she was still here and he thought that she was long gone. "I am glad too!!", he said giving her a warm smile. Before he could say anything else Aarzo quickly escaped from the room saying, "Thanks a lot for the help buddy!!!" leaving another smile on his face.
