Thanks everyone. 😊

PART 7:

Kripa sat down on the chair next to Angad's bed. As she pondered over what she had just heard about herself, Angad dialed Kartik's phone, "Kartik….Kartik…please phone uthao….where are you bro?" Angad hung up and looked at Kripa, "aise waqt par ek saala bhai tha….wo bhi nahin phone utha raha hai."

Kripa sensed the frustration in Angad's voice. She tried to reassure him, "I am sure he is busy, otherwise he would answer the phone…..where is he staying?"

"Oh……I don't know…..I don't keep track of his schedule…," he flung the phone and closed his eyes.

Angad was fast asleep, when his phone rang again. Kripa tried to wake him up, but he was in deep slumber.

"Hello!" she picked the phone, "Oh Kartik? Yes, I am Kripa….Mishti's sister…..yes Angad had surgery for appendicitis this morning….we are at the Hampton General Hospital…..Oh, the flights are cancelled because of the storm?…..Oh, well…..I am here….uh…uh….I guess I don't mind staying here…..let me give you my phone # too…." Kripa hung up after giving Kartik the details.

"Great!" she sat down on the chair, "Kartik cannot take a flight back home due to the storm in Atlanta…..Mishti is off to Miami, and here I am stuck in the hospital with someone I don't even care about!" Kripa was furious; she did not even have her bestfriend-her laptop with her- "how am I going to spend the whole day with him?"

So, Kripa spent the whole day and evening with a man she thought she could not stand or tolerate for more than a few minutes. Angad and Kripa had nothing else to do; they were forced to talk and interact with each other.

Angad broke the ice first, "so Kripa…are you still in college?"

"Hmm?" she looked up, as she was almost dozing off, "well…..I just graduated."

"Really? You look so much younger…I thought you must have just finished high school or may be 1 st year of college," Angad grinned.

Kripa was surprised, as her mom's words rang in her ears, "even I look younger than you!"

She said, "Is that a compliment or are you trying to imply that I am still a kid?" she said cynically.

"Kripa! Why are you cynical about everything? Of course it is a compliment….you think I will ever say anything else to a lady?" he laughed.
Kripa looked at him quizzically, "so you are not being honest?"

Angad rolled his eyes, "You should be a lawyer and not a writer!"

Kripa just lowered her eyes, "actually, I would have loved to be a lawyer….but…but," she paused.

"But what?" Angad was surprised, as he could not imagine her as a lawyer himself.

"Well….my mom thought I would not make a good lawyer," she said softly.

Angad was intrigued, "Oh really? Why did your mom think that way? You can be pretty attacking and shred anyone into pieces!" he teased her.

Kripa could not help smiling back, "you really think I am that vicious?"

Angad glanced at her smiling lips and thought, "nice smile….wonder how those lips would taste?" He shook his head and came back to reality, "Of course you are! I have never met a person who called the cops on me, the first time I met them!"

"What could I do? Imagine seeing a half-naked strange man in your house…what would you have done?" she asked

"First of all, let me make it clear…I would not be interested in a half-naked MAN! But if if it was a woman….hmm….or if I were a woman and I saw a man in that condition…..I would thank God from the bottom of my heart….do the hula dance and consider myself the luckiest person on the planet!" he folded his arms and glanced at Kripa with the corner of his eyes.

Kripa had a disgusted look on her face, "Men! Why are you all interested in only one thing?"

"You mean only interested in women? Of course….that is how we are wired….can't help it…..," he just shrugged his shoulders.

Kripa looked at his smug expression and thought, "I bet he has a lot of women dancing around him," for the first time she noticed how handsome he was……his unshaven and shaggy look made him look really attractive. Kripa had learnt to suppress her feminine desires over the years……she was made to believe directly or indirectly by her mother's remarks that she was unattractive and no guy would ever be interested in her…..the high school prom incident had validated her mother's fears about her younger daughter's failure as a desirable girl.

Kripa changed the subject, as she did not want to be caught staring at him, "what do you do Angad?"

"Besides dating beautiful women?" he laughed, "I make them look beautiful!"

"Is that it? Don't you have a job?" Kripa was mortified.

"Kripa….you are buddhu! I am a professional photographer…how do you think I met your sister?" Angad laughed.

"How long have you known Mishti?" she asked curiously; she was surprised at herself for asking that question as she had never enquired about any of her boyfriends before, but somehow Angad was different….was it because she had signed the consent for his surgery? She was the one who held his hand when he was panicking? She was the one entertaining him in the hospital? Did that give her more of a right on Angad than Mishti?

"Oh…may be a few weeks….but there is nothing serious between us….so technically, I am still available for dating…..dating se yaad aaya…..you have a date with the hot shot surgeon tomorrow, don't you?" he asked.

"Date? Are you crazy…I don't date men!" she said angrily

"Oh…so you date women?" he raised his eyebrows, hoping he was wrong.

"OF COURSE NOT! I am not thaaaat….you guys have a one track mind!" she exclaimed

Angad did not know why, but he was kind of relieved, 'Ok…..so you don't date! Hmmm….kya koi pyaar mohabbat ka chakkar hai? May be you have been hurt in love or something?"

"No Angad! By the way, why do you want to know?" she asked angrily

"Well….what if I want to go out on a date with you one day…I need to know my options," Angad said seriously.

Kripa was really surprised…..why would he want to go out with a girl like me? I am not his types at all.

Angad sensed her discomfort; he changed the subject, "Hey Kripa…what's up with these turtlenecks?"

Kripa frowned, 'What do you mean? I get cold easily…that is why."

"Cold? In the middle of hot Indian summer? Yeh turtleneck utaardo!" he ordered

Kripa was aghast, "WHAT DO YOU MEAN? I am not like your other women, who will do anything to please a guy like you!"

"Please me? For heaven sakes Kripa…..I have plenty of girls waiting in line to please me….you don't have to please me,' he became a little serious and sat up closer to her and looked into her eyes, "I am in search of a girl I want to please." Kripa was a little taken aback by his piercing gaze. She became a little conscious and got up, 'I am going to get a cup of coffee….do you need something?"

Angad looked up and said, "Yes I do!"

She turned around and raised her eyebrow quizzically.

Angad slid down and rested his head on his pillow and glanced at her, "your company!"

Kripa turned a little red and left the room. No one had ever spoken to her the way Angad just did. The way he looked into her eyes; the way he said he was searching for someone to please…..did he really enjoy her company?…..or was he just a big mouth? He was probably the latter…..he was just pretending to be friendly, just in case she left him all alone like her sister had…..he could not be serious…he was just playing games…..that is why she hated MEN! They played with women's emotions….her books always portrayed that……and no wonder so many girls and young women could relate to that…..the fan mail she received every day was proof that she was RIGHT!

Angad closed his eyes and put his hands under his head, "hmmm….Mishti's sister is indeed very different from other women I have known……kya baat hai is ladki mein? Why am I thinking about her? May be she is just a kind soul, who has helped me through this surgery….I am not used to people taking care of me….that's it! Why on earth would I have any other interest in that TURTLENECK GIRL?"

…to be contd…..

Thanks all of you. Appreciate all the wonderful comments 😊

PART 8:

When Kripa returned with her cup of coffee, Angad was trying to get out of bed with the nurse's help.

"Miss…….can you give me a hand?" the matronly looking nurse gestured.

"Sure," Kripa put her cup down and walked towards them

Angad instinctively put his left arm around Kripa's shoulder for support.

"Great! Let's walk slowly to the bathroom now," the nurse held his other arm.

Kripa could feel his heart beat close to her body, as Angad held on to her tightly. Kripa's right arm supported his back and Angad gradually leaned most of his body weight on her.

The nurse glanced at both of them and smiled, 'good thing Mr Khanna, your wife is here."

Kripa pulled away and glared at the nurse, "Excuse me! I am not his wife!"

Angad held on to her arm and tried to laugh, but winced in pain, "Nurse……she would rather die, than be my wife…..we barely know each other."

The nurse apologized and said, 'Oh…I am sorry….you both looked so comfortable in each other's arms….i just assumed….I guess…one should never assume these things."

Kripa released herself from his grip and sat down on the chair wondering when Kartik would arrive- "how on earth did the nurse assume they were a couple? Were they really that comfortable with each other? As far as she could tell, they both did not really care for each other…..but why did she feel so 'at home' when his arm was around her shoulder?"

She was confused…..a mixed bag of emotions…..it was the sleep deprivation affecting her……she was used to getting at least 7 hours of sleep at night- Angad had messed up her whole system!

Kripa stayed back till late in the evening. She helped Angad with his first meal after the surgery, "Oh yuck! Is hospital ke khaane se tho tumhara pasta hi accha tha!" Angad made a dirty face, as he tasted the lukewarm chicken broth.

"Of course the pasta was better!" Kripa was getting frustrated with her Angad-sitting job. Angad was pleasant as long as they were having a conversation, but as soon as he started hurting, or getting uncomfortable, he was the biggest baby in the world.

"I am just kidding Kripa! Why can't you take a joke?" Angad laughed, "you are indeed a great cook….kahan seekhi cooking? I doubt Mishti can cook that well."

Kripa calmed down and said, "mujhey bachpan se hi cooking ka shauk tha, par..par….zyaada mauka nahin mila, kyunki mom apni choice ka khaana hi banaati thi."

"Really? So your mom is a good cook too!" Angad said, 'I love to eat…in that case, I will have to visit your mom….what does she like to cook? Chicken tikka masala? Biryaani? What else?" Angad's mouth watered at the thought of his favorite foods.

"No that is all junk! Mom only made salads and soups….you know she always wanted us to be healthy," Kripa said softly.

"Oh, so your mom is a health freak! That is why you are so skinny……you probably don't eat ice creams and cakes then," Angad teased her.

"How did you know?" Kripa was surprised

"Don't tell me you have never had ice cream or cake?" Angad was shocked, as he was just kidding with her.

"Well, when I was a kid, I used to eat a lot of junk…..but I became too chubby as a result…so I had to stop eating all junk." She said.

Angad felt sorry for her, "well Kripa….jab main theek ho jaaoonga na, I will take you to this favorite bakery of mine….that will be my treat to you."

Kripa just lowered her eyes, 'that's OK…you don't have to treat me for anything."

"Hey, why not? You have been so kind and sweet to me….apni book bhi nahin likhi, aur poore din yahan mere saath rahi….you know Kripa, not many people would do that for anyone, let alone a stranger." Angad looked at her tenderly.

Kripa smiled a little, "so you will really take me to that bakery?"

Angad grinned, "Angad always keeps his promises…..you can ask any of my friends, they will tell you that it is very hard for Angad to promise anything, but if HE DOES make a promise, he never breaks it!"

Kripa let out a faint laughter, something Angad had never see her do in the last two days he had known her. He came close to her and said, "Can you make a promise too?"

Kripa looked up at his piercing gaze once again, "promise?"

"Yes…promise me that you will always smile and laugh like this." He said seriously

Kripa was a little embarrassed, "I am sorry….I think I should get going…it is dark, and you also need some rest."
As she got up to leave, Angad looked at her, "Kripa…..you have not told me whether you will keep your promise."

Kripa turned her head away, "I am not good at keeping promises."

She tried to hide the tears that were threatening to defy her eyes. She remembered her mother getting upset with her when she was 13, "You had promised me that you would fit into this dress by this New Year's…..this is our first New Year's in the US…..dad's colleagues would be there….i wanted both my daughters to be presentable……now what will you wear with that flab hanging around? You can't even keep one promise to your mother! Bhagwan, kaisi aulaad di hai tuney?"

Angad sensed that her voice was cracking as she said that. He wondered, 'aisa kya hua hai iski zindagi mein? Kehti hai ki pyaar ka chakaar nahin hai, na jaane kyon mujhey lagta hai ki kisi ne iska dil bahut zor se thoda hai."

"Hey Kripa…..do you mind staying back? Tumhari book tho waise hi adhoori reh gayi hai….promise I will not bug you all night…..just stay…you can sleep on the pull out sofa bed…I know it is probably not as clean as your bed….but if you remember, your bed is now contaminated with my stomach contents….so just stay, will you?" he rambled on.

Kripa wiped her tears and smiled again, "you are very persistent…aren't you?"

"I don't mind being persistent, if I get to see your wonderful smile each time," he grinned back at her.

Kripa shook her head, "You should have been a dentist…..looks like you are obsessed with smiles," she pulled out the sofa bed and settled into it.

Angad glanced at her as he turned the lights off, "well, I am a photographer….my job is to make people smile….yes you can say I am obsessed with wonderful smiles….just like you are obsessed with TURTLENECKS!"

Kripa threw one of the pillows from her sofa bed on Angad, "Leave me and my turtlenecks alone, will you," her voice had a friendlier tone this time; she didn't seem to mind his constant taunts on her wardrobe anymore.

The next morning, Kartik called and apologized, "Sorry Bro…..they want me to go to Miami this morning….apparently there is an emergency with the ad campaign there….the company could lose millions of dollars if I don't sort this matter out….can you manage with the hospital staff and just rest in the hospital for a few more days, till I get there and pick you up?"

Angad glanced at Kripa, who was still fast asleep on the sofa bed; he smiled and said, "no problem bro…..take your time…..I am well taken care of!"

Angad hung up, but could not help admiring Kripa's innocent and peaceful face while sleeping. With the glasses gone, he could see her long, thick and curled eyelashes; her hair was untied with loose strands all over her face and pillow. He was tempted to move the strands with his fingers and get a better look at her beautiful features, "why is she still single? Why is there no man in her life? Aisi kya baat hai? Who is she hiding from?"

Kripa got up with a startle, probably sensing that she was being watched. She got up and tied her hair in a bun, and put on her glasses.

Prithvi walked in at 8 in the morning, beaming his friendly smile, "Good morning Mr Angad….Oh Kripa…..good to see you here! How are you doing this morning?"

"Great!" Angad smiled back.

Prithvi checked his patient and said, 'Great…you can go home today…..I will see you in my office in 1 week."

"1 week?" Angad asked, 'but I will be back in Manhattan by then."

"Oh really? I would suggest you stay here for another week…..making a road trip may not be a great idea…you need rest, after all your body just went through surgery," Prithvi advised.

"Any how, my brother cannot get here for another couple of days….can I stay in the hospital?" Angad asked

"That would be hard, your insurance will not cover such a long stay….why don't you stay at Kripa's place?" Prithvi suggested.

Kripa had not planned on staying at the Hamptons for more than 2-3 days, but there was no point going home either, as she had not worked on her book yet, but with Angad there, would she be able to get anything done at all?

Angad as if read her mind, "Kripa….I promise I will stay out of your way….you can write your book….I will just rest and watch TV….PROMISE….you know I am good at keeping my promises!" he looked at her with those pleading eyes, a look Kripa had become quite familiar with over the last two days.

Kripa smiled a little and looked at both men, "OK….as long as you keep your promise."

Kripa and Angad took a taxi back to her parent's beach house. It was strange, that although they had barely spent two days with each other, it seemed like they could read each other's mind and eyes like they had known each other forever.

Kya aisa ho sakta hai, ki kisi ek insaan ko kuch pal jaan ne ke baad aisa lagta hai ki usey barson se jaante ho, aur koi insaan aisa hota hai, jisey poori umar jaan ne ke baad bhi poori tarah nahin jaan paate?? Both Kripa and Angad wondered as they drove back.

…to be contd…..
