Once upon a time in a near by land of New York City lived a young girl who walked on the ground but dreamt of the skies. A young girl slept on a twin sized mattress but would drift into her dreams floating upon a soft cloud that carried her through the 7 seas all the way to her prince charming. In her dreamland, awaited her loving parents happily standing with their open arms leading her to her love. Then out from the wilderness on an enchanted white stallion came a man. His eye's full of warmth and love and his hands filled with flowers. He would walk up to her and knelt down before her asking for her hand. The young girl would slowly take out her hand and begin reaching for the man's and everyday day the royal alarm would ring and her prince would vanish.
Welcome To Reality.
A lady wearing a light blue salwaar kameez opened the door to the room. She walked up to the windows and pulled the pink curtains aside letting light into the room. "Kripa, wake up bacha", she said opening the windows to let some fresh air into the room. With no response from her daughter , she walked up to her and sat beside her on her bed. "Kripa, get up, it's 12 o clock already. "5 more minutes", mumbled Kripa in her sleep. "No 5 more minutes. You have to wake up. We have so much work to do today", said the lady. Just then a man came to the door. "Nandini, she's still asleep?", he asked. "Yes, why don't you try. I have to go check on the chicken", said Nandini as she walked to the door. The man sighed and walked to the girl still sleeping, "When will my baby grow up?", he asked his wife. Nandini laughed and tapped her husband on the shoulder, "Karan, she'll grow up when you stop calling her a baby". Nandini left, and Karan sat next to her daughter stroking her hair. "Kripa, come on get up", he said softly. He sat there watching his little girl sleep knowing that they will only be a handful of times he will be able to do this. Soon, she will get married a leave them and then his little girl will no longer be his baby. Karan's train of thought ending when he noticed how messy Kripa's room was. There was clothes that were just stuffed into the closet, and CD's and strange looking men everywhere and her books on the floor and when was the last time she cleaned her study table, it was filled with days old cookies and three cups all half filled with coffee!
"Kripa, your room is a mess, just look at it, just look", he started complaining as he cleaned her room. "I don't know what I'm going to do with you Kripa, what will you do when you get married?", Karan kept ranting on and on and didn't notice Kripa sitting on her bed laughing. After Kripa got bored of the show she spoke out, "Baba! Don't worry, I'll clean it later", she said yawning. Karan putting the folded clothes downs and sat next he Kripa. "Good Morning princess, did you sleep well?", he asked. "Yeah, I did", Kripa replied. "Well good, because you have a lot of work to do today, so get up", Karan commanded. "But daddy…", She said making a small pout. "Kripa, for now go brush your teeth and take a shower, I'm sure your mother completed all of your chores by now", he said. Kripa smiled a kissed her daddy as she ran into her shower. Karan shook his head and continued cleaning up the room.
Karan and Nandini Sharma have lived their entire lives with each other in this small house. A few days ago they just celebrated their 25th marriage anniversary. In these 25 years, they have faced happiness, sadness, poverty, wealth and so much more. But they never gave up. Every time they were down they simply looked into they eye's of their only child…Kripa Sharma. Kripa Sharma is a 21 year old girl who always lived in a sheltered environment created by her parents. Not only was she the valedictorian of her high school, and the president of the Students Honors Society in college, she was also the most adored girl in her family and the apple of her fathers eye.
Kripa has just finished her second year in college, she's studying medicine just like her father and mother did. She comes from one of the most prestigious families in the Indian society here in New York, and everyone wants their son to marry her. She is shy, cultured, soft spoken, loving and responsible…the perfect wife. But Kripa has some other plans, unlike her parents, Kripa wants to fall in love before she gets married. She dreams and hopes of her knight in shining armor to come and take her far away. She dreams of her prince charming to come a make all her dreams come true. Kripa Sharma is a typical girl, who believes in fairy tales and knows they will come true.
Kripa was helping her father pay some bills over the internet when her mother came into the room. "Kripa, when your done here go and do the laundry okay", said her mother. "But mama" Kripa whined. "Kripa! Your woke up so late today that I had to do all your chores, but you have to do the laundry", Nandini said strictly. Kripa looked down and make a small pout. "Okay, don't worry Nandini, I'll do the laundry", said Karan. "No Karan, she cant just", Nandini was cut by Karan. "It's okay. Kripa sweetie, you sit and pay the bills, don't worry I'll do the laundry", said Karan kissing Kripa's forehead. "Okay daddy", Kripa said innocently. Karan left and Nandini rolled her eye's. "Karan, your spoiling her", she said. "Uff Nandini, she's my baby. It's okay", Karan replied while going down stairs to do the laundry.
Kripa sat in her room paying the bills and smiled. To the world Kripa was a very responsible and innocent little girl, and she was. But Kripa also knew since she was 16 that she had her daddy wrapped around her fingers. She knew that with the right expression, and correct amount of tears she could get her father to do whatever she wanted. But of course Kripa never took an advantage of that because she loved her father…but never the less she knew her daddy would never make her do anything she didn't want to. Or at least…that's what she thought.
That night the Sharma's had to go to a party at Karan's friend's house. They just moved from Las Vegas a few days ago, and today was a small house warming party. Although Kripa really didn't want to go, she didn't complain because she knew that these people were her dad's best friends. She would always hear stories of how close Karan and Kunal were since kids. Nandini would always tell her that if it ever came down to it, Karan could leave Nandini, but he'd never leave Kunal. Now Kripa didn't really like that. Being an only child Kripa only agreed to share her daddy with her mom and no one else. She didn't like this new guy coming and being this important to her daddy. She didn't like it one bit.
The only thing good about these parties Kripa thought was that she was able to dress up in her favorite Indian clothes that she would never get to wear and everyone in the party would always tell her how pretty she looked. Call her self-centered, but Kripa's loved complements. In the party, Kripa knew no one, and so sat next to her mother the entire time. Kripa was only doing this because she knew no one, but all the ladies at the party thought it was a sign of how well cultured Kripa was.
Kripa's first meeting with her Kunal uncle was very interesting. Kripa touched his feet and greeted him normally. Then he suddenly opened his arms for a hug. Kripa stood still for a minute not knowing what to do, but then hugged him. Kripa really didn't like him now. She felt uncomfortable hugging a guy she's never met in her life even if he was her fathers best friend. And he smelled like smoke, it made Kripa nauseous.
The dinner table was where it all happened. They were all eating and talking. Well, it was more like listening to Kunal uncle speak. "I tell you Karan, Sunny is much a studious young boy. He's so determined and intelligent", Kunal Uncle said. No people, he wasn't talking about his dog, Sunny as the name of his son. For the past half an hour, they've been hearing about how good and nice, and intelligent and smart and handsome Sunny is. Karan was listening very attentively as Kunal kept praising his son Sunny. "There was this one time, he had a small accident and was in the hospital. The doctors instructed complete bed rest but no Sunny didn't agree. He told his mother to bring all his books so he could study in the hospital and that year he topped his college", said Kunal. "That's amazing Kunal, really Sunny is such well mannered boy. He's so much lie his mother I must say", Karan said. "Yes, he is…he reminds me so much of her", Kunal said. Kunal's wife and Sunny's mother past away a few years ago, she died in an car accident. "So, does he ever miss his mother?", asked Nandini. "Yes of course he does, everyday he goes to the temple to pray for her soul, he's a gem of a boy", said Kunal. "So where is Sunny?", asked Nandini. "Oh, he's not here yet, he had late classes today. I really wanted to meet you all, especially Kripa but he's just so studious.
Then the focus went from Sunny to Kripa. "So Kripa, what are your plans for the future?", Kunal asked. Kripa spoke nice and softly like she did with all the grownup's. "Well I'm studying medicine right now", she said. "Oh, that's nice. I heard you were the valedictorian of your high school?", Kunal Uncle asked. "Yes, I was", Kripa replied. "That's nice", he replied. There was a moment of silence, then it happened. "Kripa do you know that when you were born your father called me first thing to tell me the news?", he said. Nindini's face suddenly turned red, and Karan was looking down. "He called me and told me that he had a gift for me", Kunal said. "Oh", Kripa answered having no idea about what Kunal was saying. "Yes, you are that gift. And I must say I'm very happy that my family will get such a beautiful and cultured daughter-in-law like you", Kunal said smiling and patting Karan's back. Kripa sat there shocked to what she was hearing. She stared at her father and mother feeling so betrayed and deceived. And she knew her parents could feel it too, because they couldn't even meet their eye's with her.
To Be Continued…
Coming Soon- "Walk On Fire". Kripa begs her parents to break this alliance but they say no. Then Kripa turns to her cousins for help.
Comments Please.
I know Kripa a little different from the innocent little girl, but I hope I didn't change her character too much. She's still the shy little girl I said she was. And Angad will be introduced soon.
