Angad
"Kripa Sharma," Josh announced with a jubilant grin.
KRIPA SHARMA? My jaw dropped.
They totally cracked up, cackling so hard that I thought they might actually start holding their stomachs and rolling on the floor. Josh knocked his fist against Raj's. They had succeeded in totally bumming me out with their choice. I mean, really, could they have picked anyone WORSE?
When I thought of Kripa, I had a vision of an alien with a huge brain. It's not that Kripa had a funny-looking head. It's just that she is beyond supersmart. I didn't know how she managed to cram all that intelligence into her head. She was enrolled in honors classes. I bet when she was a freshman, she must have been disappointed that we didn't have honors phys ed. In Kripa's vocabulary 'COOL' only applied to the temperature, not attitude.
"She's over there." Josh said, pointing behind me.
Hesitantly I glanced over my shoulder and instantly spotted Kripa. She was the Queen of Shy. She sat at a table, alone, while writing in a notebook while
she ate. Only an absolute geek would do schoolwork during lunch. She wore thick glasses. I shouldn't judge the glasses harshly. After all we didn't have much control over how good or bad our vision was. But those clothes…. dork city. Baggy, loose fitting, her body probably got lost in them.
For someone who usually blended in with the lockers, today she stood out like a neon sign. She was wearing a bright hideous green & yellow outfit, which probably caught Josh & Raj's attention. Her good fortune was my bad luck.
Man, she would probably come close to fainting when I would ask her out. Girls like her probably didn't even dare to dream about guys like me or guys at all. Did I sound like a jerk? Getting her to accept would be a breeze. The part, however, would be pretending that I wasn't embarrassed to ask her to be my date.
Oops. EMBARRASSED. Did that mean I DID care about what people thought or that I cared about what I thought. I wasn't exactly sure. Somewhere between the times the dare had been issued and the choice of the 'geek' was made, my thought process had gotten REALLY confused.
But a dare was a dare, and it would definitely be more embarrassing to back out.
"Go on, go ask her," Josh said.
I turned back around and said, "What's the rush? No one else will ask her, and she DEFINITELY wont say no."
Raj eyed me, "You DO care about what people think. You just cant deal with asking her in front of everybody."
I pointed at him with a fry, "I've already told you that I DON'T."
"Then ask her now," Josh said.
I stood up. I felt eyes on me as usual. For once it would be great if no one noticed I existed, if no one followed my every move. Every girl in the cafeteria would see me ask Kripa Sharma to the dance. EVERY girl!
Here I was, about to gift her with one amazing fantasy come to life: an actual date with Angad Khanna. I had to get over myself.
I stopped in front of Kripa's table just as she was standing. There were a few people at the other end of the table, but otherwise she'd clearly eaten lunch all by herself. I don't think I had ever done that.
I stood in front of her and as if she were a puppet whose string had suddenly gotten yanked, she jerked. Behind her thick glasses she blinked her dark, almost almond shaped eyes and wondered where I'd appeared from.
I turned around and saw Josh & Raj motioning me to ask her. I turned back around & noticed that Kripa wasn't even looking at me, she was too busy cleaning the crumbs off the table onto her tray. Only a total geekizoid would clean up after herself.
"Kripa?" I began.
She glanced at me with confusion, then returned her attention to the crumbs. Huh? Crumbs were more interesting than finding out what I, Angad Khanna, could possibly want?
I cleared my throat. "Um, Kripa, I've decided to take you to the dance on Saturday."
She froze for a second. "Sorry," she said, her eyes still on the crumbs. "But, uh, no thanks." And then she turned and walked away.
I stared stupidly at her retreating back. Sorry? Had I heard her right? How could she say no? It didn't make any sense.
I didn't get it. Did she mean she wasn't interested in the dance or not interested in me? It HAD to be the first reason, right?
I felt ALL eyes on me. The girls sitting at the far end of the table were staring at me, with their jaws dropped. Josh & Raj hurried to my side.
"What were her exact words? Was she, like, totally blown away?" Josh asked.
"Uh, yeah, I think she was," I said. What else could explain Kripa's answer? "In fact, she took off so fast that id dint get the details down, so I've gotta go find her. Later, dudes."
I ran out of the caf, Kripa's answer running through my head. Then it dawned on me, she must not have realized that I was serious.
That had to be the reason, because No girl, in the history of Kennedy High, had EVER turned down an invitation from Angad Khanna.
