Cause
“I don’t think it’s a competition” Akash rolled his eyes and asked Anu to back off
“Not for us, but Amma pakka taane maarna shuru kar dengi” Anu reminded softly
“Arey nahi yaar, Varsha job wob nahi karti so she can have a kid”
“Amma ko Savi ne keh diya usko admission nahi mili”
“That’s OK, she can apply and enroll elsewhere”
“Don’t you want grandkids?” Anu questioned
“To YEH baat hai?”
“I am not trying to make this into a Shakespearean tragedy, she is happy he seems like a great guy, but, maybe she could use the time between application and enrollment to give us a grand baby” Anu sighed
“You’ve started talking like Savi”
“Because I know if Varsha has a baby I cannot kidnap it”
“If Veev has a baby do you think they will let you kidnap it?”
“Raanav? I am unable to read his opinion about being a Dad, haan Satyen zaroor kidnap nahi karne denge mujhe”
“Smrita will probably let you keep the baby, afterall who wants middle class blood mixed with blue blood”
“She has never texted me till date Akash” Anu sighed
“Yeah we are not having a normal samdhi relationship
“I asked Viveka if Raanav texts her when he travels”
“Kya kaha usne?” Akash tried to be cool
“Ma, din mein ek baar ka average hai”
“Chalo, hai to”
“You think because of who she married we will forever be measuring the temperature of the relationship?”
“I would I think based on how fast everything happened” Akash nodded glumly
“AAayi nahi for the dinner at Savi’s… last week”
“We cant expect her for these things”
“Just like we cannot expect to show up at her house unannounced”
“We need to come up with a list of everything that will be different”
“You are an engineer you do it”
“Chalo I will”
“Naina has been kind to take Bauji to the Doc appointments”
Anu nodded
“Achhi job thi Akash, she threw it away”
“I almost don’t want to see that boy ever again, Inder?”
“Haan I didn’t want to either, when I get a chance I am going to ask Raanav about him Akash”
No…. rehne do forget it”
“He ended up judging our whole family for it”
“He married Veev right?”
“You think it’s a penance”
“Nahi to, but I mean Anu, he clearly feels differently now”
“Aise kaise, movie thodi hai zindagi Akash”
“Don’t say that, I wouldn’t want him to suppress his haughtiness and pretend his way through life Anu”
“Our Veev will have to pretend too don’t you think Akash?”
“Yeah at those high society parties”
“Not standing up for what she believes in because they don’t want naarebazi at home”
“Kuch kaha NGO worker ke baare mein Anu?”
“Hmm.. nahi… she feels the guy had no right to hit his wife”
“Yeah sure, let her tell that to the 200 million? Men or whatever”
“I hope she doesn’t make a big deal out of it
“So why don’t you say it Anu? Say YOU don’t want her doing any activism” Akash said grimly
“Akash I wouldn’t care if she did her social justice reform thing if she lived with us, I would fear for her safety at night, I would fear for backlash or revenge, but encourage karti zaroor main”
“All those things can happen even at Parashars”
“I doubt anyone will encourage her over there to be her fullest”
Akash watched Anu’s bent head
He wanted to challenge her but he knew some things were plainly not possible at the homes of elites
They cared for causes, they did tokenism, hired just the right kind of home help, showed up for photo ops and “nurtured a pet charitable cause or two”
Over there in zip code 110001
“I did not urge the cop to investigate who started the brawl, I went with your narrative” Raanav leaned on the twin glass doors leading out to the front lawn
She was poring over some papers in her favorite spot
It was after 9 neither had showered or changed for dinner
‘I told you what happened Raanav”
“On the other hand I DID NOT tell you the circumstances of the accident Viveka I don’t want you to unconditionally support the man that almost killed my Dad”
“U are going after him with pitchforks Raanav” she was horrified
“There is a possibility that he might have been drunk”
“YOU don’t know that raanav”
“YOU don’t either Ms Mathur” he said silkily
This would have been a tough marriage anyway…. But bringing their professional causes and opinions was a surefire way to wreck whatever little harmony there was
