Could she be me or Could I be her?
Viveka was not 10, she could see Smrita’s obvious attempts at closeness with Lekha was mostly to project Smrita favored Lekha and there was no such closeness or warmth when it came to Viveka
It did not affect her
But Akash and Anubha felt visibly shattered enough so their conversation post Lekha’s arrival was somber and distant
Raanav was pleasant and polite surprisingly insisting they should join the family for a board game as was the tradition on rainy afternoons
Anu had to go attend meetings in the evening though it was Sunday morning in Scotland
Akash was always busy because of the new involvement with counterfeit fraud etc
It was almost close to 4 when coffee was served back in the courtyard
Here is what was agreed upon
Harshu’s wedding on Dec 15
Rakshit’s on Jan 15
Based on how many days Viveka can take time off work and if Raanav can free up a week between his Singapore trips they would get married end of Jan or early Feb
The young couples were allowed to go do their thing after coffee while the parents hung out more
Lekha did not express any interest in Viveka and Viveka returned the favor, not with malice but with acceptance
She fit in nowhere vertically or horizontally in this family
Anu’s eyes reflected that at coffee
The food was fantastic Satyen was more affectionate than Dadi ever was, to Anu
Smrita kept her interaction with Viveka to a polite minimum
Raanav and Satyen and Rakshit compensated for it by drawing her out and asking about teaching in DU vs JNU
Satyen narrated anecdotes from Kalyani’s experience
“What about you?” Viveka asked Raanav curiously
“Oh yeh dono to bahar ki padhe undergrad, Masters, Smrita did not want them going to DU”
A moment of awkward silence enveloped the room
Lekha broke it by affirming that she belonged to the Parashar league by saying “I studied in Australia, its SO MUCH better”
“Main to Dilli ka hoon, I rate DU a 10/10” satyen laughed
“Aaur aap?” Viveka asked her future MIL
“Umm.. DU” she said squirming
“Inko kisi se ishq ho gaya, to madam ne shaadi kar li” Satyen laughed
Raanav was amused to hear Dad talk about Mom like that
”SATYAA” Smrita tried to smile
“Arey wah, “ Akash didn’t know if that person was Satyen or someone else
“I mean who knows right? At that wealth status who knows how many times a person even married” Akash and Anubha both thought in unison and did a mental highfive
“HUMSE HUI inki shaadi” Satyen explained with a big laugh
“How romantic” Viveka smiled encouragingly
“To madam ne college complete nahi ki but kayi maamlo mein, mera matlab HAR MAAMLE mein humse zyaada smart hai”
Smrita really didn’t need that over compensating, bad enough to be a college drop out in front of a woman who was possibly her age or younger, now a Director of Engg at a German Engg Company
“Aapne IIT se ki Bhabhi?”
Anubha smiled leaning back with visible satisfaction
“Masters Delhi University se, MBA IIM Calcutta se”
“Kab se kab” Satyenw as shocked
Anubha explained “1985-87”
“Mere brother tabhi move kiye Kolkatta, Kalyani ke Dad”
Then the topic veered to Satyen’s brother
Smrita never recovered from it though, clamming up
Though she was superior in every which way to the Mathurs, Anubha and Viveka were miles ahead
Her insecurity was not misplaced
Raanav was right, these two women were miles ahead
Lekha’s degree in Australia from New South Wales was in fashion Marketing, she was gorgeous but not someone with a high IQ. She was propped up by Mr Tandon’s wealth much like Smrita was propped up by satyen
Smrita realized in a flash that that was why she liked Lekha so much
She saw herself in lekha
She did not see anything in Viveka
And more importantly Viveka will never see herself in Smrita and that hurt her immensely
Any hopes of her accepting Viveka vanished into thin air that moment
“Lets go hang out” Rakshit offered Viveka a hand with a smile
She got up laughing
Raanav nodded and followed them as he texted
They headed to Rakshit’s room
Lekha finished up her phone call and arrived there
“Thanks for asking my Ma about her new role” Viveka spoke appreciatively to Raanav
“Its impressive” he nodded
“My mother’s expression told me she didn’t expect that” Viveka smiled
“She thought I wont chat with her?” he asked grimly
“Nahi, par tum mere alawa kisi se zyaada baat nahi karte na”
“Umm.. I don’t know what to say” he shrugged casually
“I am happy you spoke to my parents today”
“What is important to you will be important to me Viveka”
She smiled when he used her name to stress
“Tumhari baat hoti hai Inder se?”
His expression changed
“Why?”
“I want to know”
“I do talk to him, he is my cousin”
“Meri baat ho sakti hai?” Viveka asked
“Are u asking me?” he was surprised
“Hmm.. Mere paas number nahi hai, I don’t know if I ever got it”
He went on his phone and forwarded the contact
“Thanks”
“How is Naina?” he asked quietly
“Theek hai”
“You guys should go to your room” Rakshit back slapped Raanav
“Sure, Ive been telling her now for 5 hours” He held Viveka’s elbow with a nod
“Do u always wear a saree” Lekha asked her as she twirled on Rakshit’s arm in the skimpy floral sleeveless sun dress
Viveka realized Lekha must have spent the night over at parashars no wonder she was able to change out into yet another couture
There was so many things that was disconnected and disconcerted about this, that was unfamiliar to Viveka
All her parents fears about Naina came to the fore
She wondered why raanav did not press for anything s---al before the wedding, She asked herself if she would have been OK herself
Could she be a Lekha Tandon?
“I wore it for him” Viveka tilted her head with a smile pushing up her glasses
“Yep… u can give me all the credit” raanav nodded as if taking oath, raising a hand
“Don’t u feel hot” Lekha followed up
“Oh yeah…. ALL THE TIME” Viveka twisted her words in gentle mockery
Raanav laughed breathlessly
“Me I mean like hot hot” Lekha fanned her face
“Umm.. no not really” Viveka shrugged
Rakshit sauntered back in after his call and asked lekha if she wanted to go check out a swallow’s nest in one of the trees outside
Raanav wanted to bring Viveka to his room
They headed over to his
He entered shut the door and pinned her to the door and held her chin with a groan
“I am ready to get married tonight” he said in all seriousness
“Did you want us to be intimate before the wedding?” she asked him looking up into his stormy eyes
“I would… have… but I can wait” he said achingly
“Tumhe laga mujhe poochhna theek nahi hoga?” he bend down and nuzzled her cheek and ear
“I am going to respect you Viveka” he said in her ear, feeling her lobe
She shuddered, and shook…
