The Manuscript Marauders Bingo Challenge Thread
He groaned, this time loudly. Visitors again? What did they think he was.. a mental ward patient? He saw their faces tinged with pity and sympathy and felt rage boil inside him. Everyone was there. Everyone whom he had ever considered a friend, everyone whom he had once betrayed, everyone who had directly or indirectly always supported him. And looking at them, he felt a sense of pride rush through his veins. Try as he might, he couldn't bring himself to hate any of them. As he looked up at them, he reluctantly felt his lips curving upwards, and it wasn't long before he was smiling.
****
'This is it for you, isn't it Captain?'
He didn't reply. 'Captain, I hope you and your wife have a nice afterlife. I heard about her, very sad isn't it?'
Rajveer didn't even make a move to reply.
'Captain,' he hissed, 'you will answer me when you should, even thought it might kill you.'
'Yes sir.' His answer was monotonous.
'Captain, it was a pleasure working with you. I hope—I hope I could've repaid you in some way. Don't worry, I will think of a way. I- it was a pleasure, Captain.'
'I wish I could say the same regarding you, Lieut. Col. Parashar.' He muttered, but Kunal Parashar had long since gone.
****
'How're you feeling, Captain?'
He allowed a dry smile to grace his features and nodded.
'Not so well, eh? You know Captain, when Naina first told me that she loved you, I was angry. So angry that I could've killed you with my bare hands. But now that I think about it, maybe you two wouldn't have been so bad.'
'Captain Sharma.. you know about me and Ritu… I still love Ritu, you know I do.'
'I know, Captain. I do. That's partly why I was angry at the first place.'
'Well, it all ends doesn't it?'
He smiled wryly, 'you know, Captain, sometimes I think we would've been so much better off without the army.'
'And why's that Captain Sharma?'
'We could go around like civilians, not kill people, never having to worry about life.'
'They worry about their lives too, you know.'
He nodded, 'I do, but I just wish everything would've been easier. I wish we were still in KMA. I wish—' he seemed to snap out of it, 'Anyway Captain, it-it was a pleasure. It really was.'
Rajveer nodded, perfectly understanding what he was trying to say and said, 'You too. Best of luck with your life.. Alekh.'
He didn't stop walking, and neither did he acknowledge the usage of his first name, but as he went out of the visitor's room, there was a skip to his step.
****
'Idiot, I will miss you.'
'What a great way of showing it,' he replied blandly.
'You know what I mean.' His tone took a serious tone, 'How are you?'
He looked up at his friend, 'What do you mean? I'm – '
'Fine? Wasn't that what you were going to tell me? Don't lie to yourself, Raj. Tell me.'
'You know, sometimes I don't understand how you do it. You told me I have a choice. I made my decision okay? I don't care if I die like a coward, all I want to do is be with Ritu again. And no matter what happens, my decision will not change. I know what I'm doing Bhargav. Trust me.'
'I do. But I guess its you're right. It's your choice. Just think, don't you ever have even the slightest feeling that you want to reciprocate her feelings? She does love you? Won't you even trust yourself to like her?"
'Bhargav, I don't want to get into all that now. I don't love her, I don't even remotely like her more than a friend. Just do me a favor okay? Keep her safe from everything. If something happens to her, I will not be able to forgive myself.
'Why?' a smirk was starting to form on Bhargav's lips
'What do you mean why? Do you want her to die?'
'No, but the question is, do you?'
'Of course not. What are you getting at, Bhargav?"
'You just admitted that you care for her.' Bhargav smirked, as Rajveer realized that he had lost. Lost badly in the game of words with his friend.
'You're way too manipulative, Bhargav.'
He mock saluted his friend, 'That's what I do, Raj.' He was almost at the door when he turned back, 'I will miss you, Raj. I really will.'
He smiled again, this time sincerely, 'I know.'
****
'Captain.'
'Madam.'
They stared at each other, none of them knowing what to say. He wouldn't meet her eyes for he found he could not, and she was too broken inside to even support him. They searched for every place to look at, except for each others' eyes, but didn't succeed. Suddenly overwhelmed by a rush of emotion he couldn't classify, he moved forward and hugged her. She stiffened for a minute, before letting herself relax. He didn't know what he was feeling, but the hug definitely felt good. It was his way of apologizing and her way of accepting it. It was then that he got the sudden realization that he needed her support, even though it was non verbal.
As he buried his face into her hair, he felt her stir.
'Captain?'
'Raj.' He replied back automatically, not even knowing himself what possessed him to say that, 'Raj.' He thought that he felt her smile, and the sensation made him happy, happier than any of his earlier talks had been.
'Raj?'
'Hmmm?' he made a non committal noise from beneath her hair.
'Take me.'
He suddenly released her as if she was plague, and searched her face for any sign of joke. All he saw was sincerity, and she was looking up at him with wide and honest eyes.
'Are you sure,' he asked her, his voice, for the first time taking a gentle tone
She nodded simply, 'I'm ready.'
He looked back at her and nodded as well. 'I'm ready.' She said again.
He hugged her again, this time with a gentle caress, and vowed to make her first time memorable.
****
It was long after that, when he lied awake with her sleeping on his chest, it suddenly came to him that somewhere along the way, he had changed his decision.
Preview for Part 24
'What,' his voice had taken a tone of venom,' are you doing?'
'Can't you see?'
'I ask again, ' his voice was deadly calm now, 'what are you doing here?'
'It is none of your business.'
'I bloody well think it is.'
She smirked at him pityingly, 'It won't be after you sign these.'
