He stirred and looked around, the place, the bed looked very unfamiliar to him. And that was when he realized that what had happened last night. Maia had told him that she was married. He didn't even know why he was so depressed by it. They were just friends, right? Then why did he feel so left out that he had to resort to this.. the bed was empty, he supposed the girl had gone already. As he put his clothes back on, he reasoned that he was upset only because of everything going on, and Maia was just the last straw. And they were just friends.

At last that's what he kept saying to himself.

'Colonel!'

Colonel Bhattacharya looked up from the huge file he was working on, and looked enquiringly at the person standing in front of him.

'Yes, Major Baig?'

He seemed to be nervous about something and was wringing his hands, 'Sir, what about Captain Shekhawat?'

The Colonel looked up at him, and for a moment almost faltered after looking at the man in front of him. Hardening himself, he took a deep breath and continued:

'Well, after looking at all the evidence, old and new alike, we have decided that Captain Rajveer Singh Shekhawat is guilty of murdering his son by poisoning. On all this evidence, we are awarding him the death penalty, as is deserving by his acts.'

Silence.

'He will be executed on the morning of Saturday, two days from today.'

He heard the file fall with a thud from his junior's hands.

He was visited again in the cell, and this time he was wide awake when his visitor was admitted. He looked up for a second, seeing Major Bhargav standing there, and ignored the slight disappointment he was feeling when he saw it wasn't Major Singh.

Bhargav however was as cheerful as ever, 'How are you doing, old man?" he asked. He was only awarded by a scowl, and thus he went to more pressing matters.

'Raj, I want you to listen properly. The Army has taken a decision regarding you.'

He didn't move, or give any indication that he was listening, so Bhargav continued, 'Well, Colonel Bhattacharya had called a meeting today morning about it, and we discussed all about the evidence..'

'Come to the point, Bhargav, you are rambling.'

He flinched again and smoothed his hands unnecessarily, 'Raj, you have forty eight hours.'

He looked up this time, but barely. All Bhargav could see was a tiny ray of triumph on his otherwise haggard looks. When the silence got extremely uncomfortable, that was when he started speaking.

'Raj,' he touched his shoulder gently, 'you have a choice.'

'I do?' he asked.

Bhargav nodded, 'Yes, you do. You have a choice between dying like a hero and dying like a coward. Your wife is dead, Raj. If all you can think is about going back to her, you will die like a coward. You have friends here, people that care about you. People that love you.' The double entendre of 'love' didn't go unnoticed by Rajveer but he ignored it, 'If you reciprocate their feelings, you die like a hero. Think about it, it's your choice.'

Rajveer smiled wryly and nodded, hoping his friend would get the message and leave now. He did, leaving the Captain with a train of thoughts. The events of the past days kept colliding with each other until the point that he couldn't control himself.

Captain Rajveer, hereby at this moment, you are being re-arrested for the murdering your own son, Rohit Singh Shekhawat with cyanide.

Don't bet, Captain. It doesn't suit you.

'You are one of the worst people I've had the misfortune to love.'

The words kept repeating themselves in his head and he could sense the sincerity behind them.

'You killed your child. You rascal, you are a murderer.!

He was on the last stage before a breakdown, he knew it, and he could do nothing to prevent it. It was his choice once again.

On one side was Ritu Mishra, the woman he loved, and on the other side, Naina Singh Ahluwalia, whom he didn't know where to place in his mental book of feelings.

The decision wasn't hard to make.
