Sad to see the trials and travails of this couple...

Parallelly, a tough and rocky place for you to be in Nisha...having to juggle stories, readers, their likes and dislikes. I wonder how you manage to make a call and decide what to write when ?!

Nihar from being a quietly rebellious kid has transformed over the summer to being aggressively demonstrative. All this while this kid must have been quietly telling himself that dad wouldn't really bring a new mom home and now it's slowly sinking in that the replacement mom is truly in blood here to stay .

When I was reading it I felt like cmon kid life is much harder than a paratha being out of shape or not cut in triangles but then realized that's not fair ... we want the kids to grow up faster ... if they can process stuff on the net , play gadgets , then understand big stuff too right??? But that's being cruel on the kid.

But maybe he needs to be spoken by elevating him to the status of a young adult ... On the other hand they have aadhya who is absorbing all this like a sponge 😊 shucks it's hard to be a raging teen...

Chasing away

Aadhya had insisted she pick her up that afternoon. Preet and Suvi had talked over the morning issues and Preet had told Suvi to just take it easy and let Nihar
take the bus that afternoon with her boys.
Aadhya cried hysterically when she realized Nihar was not going to be in the auto

Then began, a stressful afternoon

Nihar didnt want to eat rice, he ran off after a cursory "I am going to eat parantha at Preet's aunty's"

Aadhya wanted to be with him, so Preet ended up feeding all of them to Nihar chagrin

Preet didnt think a second about it

But Aadhya started to take a nap, and she left her there and returned.
Played her favorite marathi hits and tidied the house, went through the drawers in the kitchen and noticed everything was so very neatly organized

Tai had called asking if she could send her some money

When Suvi asked her why she needed money

"Does your husband ever ask you that?" was Tai's scoff

"Mala maheet aahe, toparyanta to doosra pati aahe" as far as she knew Neel was the second she cackled

"Aapana majhya chautha pati call karva"

Suvi was in a bad mood, Tai got it from her

"apaa jya pad'dhatine jaara ahata tyabaddala kaaji karu naka"

At the rate you are going thats not too far Suvi was told

She hung up after her hand stung from the hot water she accidentally ran in the kitchen sink, and her body burned up from Tai's insult

She knew no money was going to exchange hands, Tai was a witch, there was no potion or spell to drive her away

Tai had reminded her that when everyone in the world dumped her she was the only one who rescued her

Neel returned early to find Suvi curled up on the couch staring at a Hindi songs channel

The house unlit though it was a rainy 6 PM

"Bache kahan hain?" he smiled

She sat up groggily

"Aadhya waha se aati nei... Nihar bhi homework karne ko nei aate hei"

Neel took his phone and texted Preet, Nihar showed up in less than two minutes

"Nihar?"

"I told her I was going to come home when I finished the game I was playing"

"You know 5 PM is homework time" Neel growled

Nihar gave Suvi the stink eye as she shifted uneasily

"YOU told him" he barked

"Niharrr"

"She is chasing me Dad... I cant be in school, I cant ride the bus, I cant go to Preet aunty's"

Suvi cringed... walking towards the kitchen

neel sat down groaning

"Umm... aap apna home work karen... phir baat karenge"

"Umm.. can I take it next door?"

"U may... (sighing) not" Neel finished

All I can say is Ayyyooo

Wish there was an elder at home to balance off the equation and wish Neel's mother would comply !!
I see no light at the end of the tunnel and my tunnel vision is foreseeing the situation getting grimmer !!

What are they going to do ??? And guess Suvi has not yet gone back to work...or has she quit? hope not !!

Chasing away ... an awesome title ... so apt. Anger and Grief... it's sad to see this emotional rebellion of Nihar is making him take it all out on Suvi as for him she is an unwanted extra who is disposable . He is clearly communicating to her... you are not my mom... so don't try to be mine. He is acting out big time .

It's irony... Nihar did not have a say in remarriage but post that the same kid especially being a hurt teen has huge power to turn around and create situations of conflict under the given circumstances. Suvi and Neel better watch out and not get instigated by the divide and rule approach of an angry and confused kid . Neel has to step up and may be redraw boundaries in this new family set up and help Suvi go easy on herself without trying to be too perfect for Nihar's sake .

Suvi must be realizing that as it is it's brutal being a step mom and to top off the misery she continues to be in the trenches as regards to Tai, no kid stuff this... only a long and unrewarding wild goose chase...sigh...

Rules of guilt

Tense silence hung over the dinner table that night.

"Let's come to an agreement shall we?" Neel said grimly

Nihar just tore up his rotis and rotated the pieces, Aadhya did the same, albeit sleepily

"Umm.. Suvechha... umm.. Aadhya's Aai will get you ready in the morning, depending on IF I am able to drop you off I will, otherwise she will walk you to the bus stop"

"Preet aunty can walk me" Nihar was sure

"Yep... I am sure she can, but she wont, you have your own..." Neel stopped stunned, he was about to say "mother" accidentally

Suvi coughed to distract Nihar's attention

Neel's spoon slipped from his plate and clattered to the floor

Aadhya picked it up and handed it cheerfully

""Umm.. so where were we?"

"I get it... no Preet aunty"

Neel exhaled audibly

"Aapko chinta kis baat ki hai? Kyon dukhi hain aap?"

"Neel?" Suvi stoppe dhim

"Ek min Suvechha"

He raised his hand

She wanted to leave, she knew he wouldnt answer honestly

"Nothing" Nihar mumbled and began to eat finally so he neednt talk

"Nihar?"

"Umm... I am fine... doing things by myself... I dont need her help Daddy"

"Umm... she is not helping you... she umm.." he was cautious this time, lest the word "Love" slipped out

Suvi used the opportunity to place more subzi on his plate

Everything was too spicy for Nihar

Suvi had tried to not spice things up, but was a 6 on a scale of 10 and Nihar was a 2 or a 1

His eyes watered, he acted like it was the mirchi that was causing it

Young, male pride

"Paani lenge?" Neel was kind

"Umm..mmm" Nihar shook his head, tears flying

Aadhya had finished both rotis

And sat up bravely not falling over

"Main sulaake laati hai" Suvi said cheerfully

Nihar found the horrible grammar funny, he actually let a smile slip

She spent the next 30 minutes in Aadhya's room

When she came out, Nihar was in bed too

Neel was storing leftovers in small containers in the frig

"Sorry, kal se koi mirchi nai haan?" she nodded apologetically

"Thanks" Neel smiled

"Neel usko daatne ka nei"

"Kidhar daate hum?" he was not happy

"Abhi.. tum"

"Koi to niyam chahiye? Preet ke ghar rahenge? Agle 8 saal?" he asked huffing

"Barobar hai" she whispered

"Aap itni udaas kyon hain?" he asked

"Tai ka phone aaya" She began... and spoke about the call

They sat out in the front patio there was no breeze but the air was moist and monsoon like

"I feel guilty" he mumbled

"U dont owe her anything" Neel was dismissive

"I dont think thats true..." she said

"Kya kiya unhoney?"

"She was the only one that was willing to accompany me to Delhi" she said crouching and staring out into the night

"I didnt always make the best choices Neel" she said softly not crying

"But it has nothing to do with your mother, your Tai insulting your parents?" he hissed

"Tai knows what gets to me... every time" she said

"And now she sees you like a con? Like herself?"

Suvi looked at him in the dark her eyes sparkling

"She is just trying to burn you out of this marriage Suvechha" he said angrily

"She is a contemptuous old lady" she said without emotion

"Aaur aapne itne saal kaise guzaaare?" he asked in awe

She smiled with gratitude

"she is a controlling woman who is licking her chops and plotting something to get back at you. You need to stop calling her, or answering her calls" he said

"Itna khatarnaak hei?" she giggled

"Itna nahi... ITNEE" he corrected her stroking her lower lip
