My nephew's teacher is leaving for France where she had purchased a house several years ago. It is in a small town and they have a few acres and are growing all sorts of fruits etc. I was pretty envious when i heard that but I dont think I would like to live in France, so there's that.😉

For some reason that sounds very appealing today

Wonder where Vani is I want to know what she would do

Vani is very much here ...in NYC ... your country Nisha !! And Iam actually going to meet some Sosyians this evening !! So looking forward to it !

As for your what I am doing with my life...iam actually living your dream. Iam 61, retired as a teacher at 46, took a new path and started a non profit and embarked on a completely new journey.
It has been exhilarating and I wonder what took me so long but am relieved that I at least found my calling at 46.
And as I age, I find that being in my space, with a few friends who care and think likewise, with a couple of hobbies I pursue actively, my life is complete. My husband and I find a few things to do together like travel, but we have radically different passions which we pursue independently.

Life is good Nisha, but I have also realised it is what we make of it, not what it could be !

Please keep writing..I don't post as CKP has not ignited me, but your writing still fascinates me and brings me back to the forum !!

Shucks Nisha! This is one thing I can do anything to push back and avoid discussing this with hubs !!
Though we are all entering the phase where we hv to!!! The stage we are as a family I think I can say that dilli Abhi door hai and I'm reminded of Robert Frost's the woods are lovely , dark and deep but I have miles to go before I sleep. 😊

My head says we shouldn't retire here ... agree it could really get lonely here and if I / we do have to Use a senior center at some stage in life where the body is not cooperating it rather be in India where I've personally seen a good system in TN that offers Decent luxury, awesome food and lot of good community company... no boredom.

I wouldn't like to be in any of the metros in India. CBE would be my ideal choice for weather and it's decent place for people like us who are creatures of habit...

How long to work... honestly I've no answer to that... how much is enough is such a scary thought ... it's not enough you save for retirement, what would you be comfortable with creating a medical fund that's not completely dependent on med insurance the way we are headed .

I understand where this lady is coming from wanting to settle down near Reno. In one of our trips to Tahoe and Yosemite, we were driving across Sierra Nevada , beauty... beauty ... joys of nature. We did the day cruise but the waters were rough for kayaking or speed boat. So we decided to extend our stay at south Tahoe and do the drive to Yosemite the next day. Managed to find a place in Carson city. At one point before reaching town , as we were driving past a small village town, this spectacular fragrance of Mahaani ( kizhangu) came wafting by ... it was in the air... and the rustling sound of water from the nearby waterfalls that you could hear and a view of snow capped mountains. That moment life felt a bliss. It tempted me for sure to consider retiring there right in that middle of nowhere pristine spot.

But that's impulse because more than place we need our people , do we not??? 😊 Another place I fell in love was Ile d'orleans , Quebec in Canada . The village was so damn beautiful ... people come there to retire... they build a home by water which flows like a creek through out, for want of better thing to do, take up cultivating honey or something and set up curio shops . I told hubs let's retire here ... it's not a tough place to live when old like the US and also be able to visit daughter whenever we feel like , ha ha ... and he said so what about when it's winter all snow and the creek iced over 😆 there it went tup 😆 .

Two things Nisha, I dread a life without him and he dreads a life in a no man's land where he can't call on people whom he can call as his own. So India it is for us but one thing I would like to make sure is weather stays decent thru the year wherever we are!!!

Late Last night I watched Qarib Qarib single. I thought parvathy Menon and Irfan khan were brilliant as a couple. Lovely movie. Now that I think of it , thats how I would like my life to be... do rafting in rishikesh, travel by ultra luxury train from Delhi to Jaipur , take the cable car and traverse the hills of north east Gangtok , Arunachal Pradesh with its virgin beaury etc. Yeah that wouldn't be bad . I'm shameless to admit I'm self centered and carry no noble thoughts of extraordinary humane service or stuff like that . I hope to do whatever little i can in my radar. That's about it. Neither am I religious nor spiritual as of now 😆

Thanks for the honest reply Kalpana
Of course the wealthiest are the most kanjoos, you and I probably "give" way more

I live in the stunningly beautiful NW, there is too much nature and no people
20+ years Ive had my fill for beauty, driving to work I can see snow capped mountains, 30 minutes from home we can go rafting, or hiking or camping, there is national forest everywhere

Millions of acres of protected land and forests. Its a great place to raise kids if u have the right job, commute is less than 30 minutes for the whole state. Less than 500 desi families so no depression either in the younger critical phase of life

Though I think now it matches a Bay Area or Austin in some neighborhoods.
When we raised kids, or when kids were toddlers there was less than 50 families

I would love to live in a busy apartment complex in Delhi or NCR and have everything close by, and people watch from my balcony in the evening.
Woh zindagi kaafi kamaal ki hogi

Belongings

"It's a Beautiful apartment Harit inhaled deeply. Teeku's Dad's minions had cleaned it aired it out and stocked the frig and put fresh flowers everywhere. Not an atom of dust anywhere, every room had a split AC even the kitchen had one he noticed.

"Chai banayen hum? she asked politely

Chandu was in the one bedroom, large and doubling up as their bedroom and his play room and his homework area.

Her study desk was in the gorgeously decorated living room with brass lamps, and throw cushions and low divans and a darbari jhoola in crimson carved and speckled in multicolored paint, even the lamp shades were hand crafted.

"It's a beautiful apartment he sighed

"I didn't save much of what I made, sab ghar par laga diye hain. Dad ko kahe hum ki apartment bhi hum pay karenge, I got myself a loan he wouldn't let me pay she explained nervously

"That's great... I bet the furnishings cost as much as an apartment in Bareilly he scoffed

"Ouch!

"No?

"Umm... kaafi mehanga tha she nodded

"No wonder you love this place, the house back in Bareilly must seem like a dump to you

"I love your room... and the map she said earnestly

"Thanks he chuckled, stetching to grab her as she stood behind the swing

He bent her over him and kissed her as he swayed slowly

"Ummm he groaned audibly loving the inverted kiss

"How come we never tried that ever? he questioned thumbing her lip

" Aap yahan ruk jaayen phir roz she squeaked

"U know I cant do that he let go

She sat by him longingly

"So I can be here by myself and return by myself? she asked

"U don't know how long the work is going to be... I can come pick Chandu up he offered generously

"What if I love going back to work? she blurted

They both looked away

"Hari... aap weekends mein aa jaayen please? she begged

"Hum aapse wohi kahen to? he asked grimly

She got up to make chai and briskly started to make dinner

Chandu was in his element like there was nothing wrong with him he even wanted to talk with Lakshmi and Yashu and Harshu that night

Lakshmi was the most heart broken

She spent an hour convincing in futility to Harit that he should stay in Delhi.

"Ma hum nahi ruk paayenge, Monday ko Bauji ka who sooti ke dhaage waali factory ka judgement hain, who hamari taraf se hai, vaadi prativadhi dono hi ko pro bono represent kar rahe hain... mushkil hai Ma

Alka told Teeku not to wear jeans or shorts to work just because she is in Delhi

Suman and Alka spent a good 20 minutes teasing her

"Aapke aane se pehle saare mever ke laddoo Rishu hazam kar jaayenge Suman reminded her

Teeku didn't care, she was back where she belonged... Or so she thought

When she walked into the bedroom and found something that belonged to her sprawled on the bed face down fast asleep, his navy sweats revealing some Scottish brand name, the black tee curling at the edges, tired, his arm scraped up as he carried her suitcases upstairs

She began to cry
