Part 30

Raj: Nani can I speak to Raghuvendraji? I am sure hatred over the years has caused him a lot of pain and suffering.

Gayatri: No beta. I dont want a repetition of today's scene. We have caused you enough hurt over the years. I don't want Raghu abusing you any more. You need to focus on the good things in your life right now. Your lovely wife Naina, Your baby.

Raj: Nani do you think I'll make a good father? I have read all the books, everything, but I feel like I am missing something because I have never experienced a father-child relationship.

Gayatri: You'll be an amazing parent Raj. You have everything it takes. You are an innately loving and nurturing person. Now it's time you go to bed too. You don't want Naina waking up and wondering where you are.

Next morning

Naina: Rajveer what's happened to your hand? Did you hurt yourself? How? Why?

Raj: It's nothing Naina. I was chopping some vegetables for a late night snack and the knife slipped.

A voice came from behind "Now really Colonel? We expect better from you

Raj: Doc...

Naina: Shalini!

Raj: What are you doing here?

Shalini: I had promised to be here for her delivery. And by the looks of it she is ready to pop! I also have another surprise...

Raj and Naina turned and say Gunny. Gunny and Shalini went and hugged Naina. Raj then came forward and hugged Shalini. He then turned to Gunny, but Gunny backed away and held out his hand instead. Raj was a bit taken aback.

Gunny: Naina how are you? Is your pain better? How are you feeling?

Naina: Whoa Gunny.. Those are a lot of questions. I am much better now. So you can stop interrogating me.

Gunny: Well, someone needs to prioritise your health.

Gunny stared at Raj who looked hurt at the insinuation.

Raj: Come guys, Why don't I get Nani to open up the guest rooms for you too? You can freshen up and then we can all have lunch together?

When Gunny and Shalini were in the Gunny's room alone:

Shalini: What on earth was that Gunny? Why were you so cold with Raj?

Gunny; Like I said someone has to prioritise Naina. After all Raj clearly prioritises his baby.

Shalini: That's completely unfair. You know how hard Raj tried to convince Naina to have an early delivery?

Gunny: That was all talk. Right from the beginning Naina has felt like Raj is only with her because of the baby? A man who was insisting on a divorce suddenly did a volte face on hearing she is pregnant. And then his constant chatter about how this baby is his sense of identity... etc. etc. It's not a surprise that Naina feels an innate pressure to put her own health at risk for the baby's wellbeing. This is all because of Raj.

Raj: GUNNY! I am sorry I didn't mean to eavesdrop. But Gunny do you really feel that way? It's not true at all!!! Naina is my number one priority and I have done my best communicating that to Naina.

Gunny: Well in that case you have failed miserably. Ask Shalini... Ask her... How many times has Naina let slip the fact that she thinks that the baby is the most important thing in your life.

Shalini: That is true. But that's Naina's own insecurity. How is Raj to blame for this?

Gunny: Well raj. I am a far more selfish person. I do think you are to blame for all of Naina's pain and troubles at least vis-a-vis the pregnancy.

Gunny walked away.

Raj: Doc? I ... don't know how i have failed. I have always loved Naina the most and would always chose her over the baby, if I ever had to. But I have failed in instilling this belief in Naina.

Shalini; Raj, don't get caught up in these things. Just focus on Naina right now. She's ready to deliver any day and you'll have to be a major support for her. Given how volatile her blood pressure is and how against she is a C-Section, we will have to try for a normal delivery. In that process she'll need all your help and support because I pre-empt that it won't be an easy process.

Naina went into labor three days later. Raj was with her in the delivery room. Naina had an excruciatingly painful labor. 16 hours later and she had still not delivered.

Raj: Dr there has to be an alternate. It's been 16 hours. Shal say something. Can't we do a C-section?

Shal: No Raj. Naina's developed a fever making an operation unviable.

Dr: Raj the baby weighs 9 pounds. That's an extremely tall task for a woman of naiba's frame. In the last hour the baby's shoulder was stuck against Naina's bones. We have managed to adjust the baby's position. She's ready to push now but I have to warn you the pain will be worse.

One hour later the baby's head had come out. But by then Naina was exhausted.

Naina (barely a whisper): Raj I can't... I can't... this pain is killing me.

Raj: Naina... jaan... I can see the baby's head... Please one final push. Press my hand as hard as you can.

Naina: AAAHHH

Naina collapsed exhausted. But they heard the sweetest sound in the world. The sound of their baby wailing.

Shal: Congratulations!!!!!!! YOU HAVE A BEAUTIFUL BABY GIRL...HERE TAKE HER...

Raj and Naina held their daughter together and were weeping tears of joy... Naina had regained strength on seeing the baby

Naina; Raj... you were right... A baby girl... Our daughter... Your dream come true... She's perfect isn't it.

Raj: Yes she is. But not as perfect as you.

Dr: I am sorry to interrupt guys. but let's get the mother and baby cleaned up and then you can spend all your quality time together.

15 minutes later Raj came back to Naina's room with their daughter wrapped in a soft swaddle. He placed her in Naina's arms.

Raj: Look at the mass of hair on her head. And you should see how she clutches my finger. Doesn't look like a newborn does she? Our beautiful big baby

Naina: I felt it. Felt like I was pushing out a six month baby. But you know what princess I knew it was worth it. I love you so much... But do you know who loves you the most? Your daddy. Since the day we discovered that you were in my tummy, i knew that papa has a new number one. You saved mumma and papa's marriage. You know what that makes you. The most special baby.

Raj's face clouded. He had failed completely in making Naina realise what he felt for her. Before he could say anything the nurse came in and said that Naina needed to rest.

Naina: Raj you'll take care of her right? I won't sleep for more than hour. Just keep holding her.

Raj: Don't worry. Just rest my darling. I love you. i love you the most in the world.

Raj took his daughter to the nursery. He cradled her lovingly and kissed her gently on the cheeks.

Raj: You know bacha. Your mom has been so brave for you. We have to make her feel special. Tell her how much we love her. Make her feel like the number one person in our lives.

The baby made a sound, almost as if agreeing with Raj

Raj: I know jaan. You understand papa, don't you?

Shalini walked in and smiled at beautiful site.

Shalini: I see someone already has daddy wrapped around her fingers.

Raj: Doc she was only born a few hours ago. But I feel like I have known her forever. I...

A nurse ran in.

Nurse: Colonel Shekhawat. Come quickly the doctors calling you. Your wife is haemmorhaging?

Raj: haemmorhaging? Bleading you mean? How.. what do i? Doc...

Shalini: Raj bleeding isn't uncommon. I am sure it's nothing. Give me the baby and go with the nurse.

Raj gently handed the baby and ran behind the nurse. His heart was sinking.
