Part 26
Dr: Rajveer, this is the specialist. He's had an opportunity to examine Naina
Raj: What do you think?
Dr: I agree with Dr. Khanna's assessment. I would recommend a C-Section right now. Your wife is at 34 weeks. Yes the baby benefits from being in her womb for the next three weeks when it becomes full term. BUT the pain and overall risk that this put Naina at isn't worth it. I have spoken to Naina but she is thinking very emotionally and that's natural. But I hope you are able to convince her.
Raj goes to Naina's room. Naina's eyes were closed and he could see that she was in pain. She sensed Raj's presence and opened her eyes.
Naina: Colonel Shekhawat. The fear and uncertainty doesn't you. I am perfectly fine now.
Raj: Really Naina? Perfectly fine? I still can't forget the amount of pain you were in.
Naina: It was nothing Raj. And I am doing fine. Ouch!
Raj: Naina you are still in pain!
Naina: Raj it's just a slight pain. I am fine.
Raj: Naina agree for a C-Section. Please. The baby will be fine. Will just need extra care and attention.
Naina: NO! Raj I made it very clear. I will not go for an early c-section. I won't. Please don't do this to me.
Raj: Calm down Naina. Please calm down. Try and get some sleep.
Naina closed her eyes. Raj sat there stroking her hair till he was sure she had slept.
He got up to speak to the doctor.
Raj: Dr why is she still in pain? It's not as much as before. But...
Dr: Raj I am sorry. But in her state we can't give her stronger pain killers. If she decides to carry the baby to term she will have to experience this.
Raj left the office and sat outside Naina's room. He was overcome with everything. He understood Naina's stubbornness. It stemmed from her love for their baby - a baby he too loved to death. But he couldn;t see Naina in pain. And if there was a risk to her life... What if history repeated itself. Like his mother, Naina too... No he couldn't even bring himself to think that. He shuddered.
He made a decision. He was going to force Naina. It was for her own good. Naina got up an hour later. By then Raj had spoken to the doctors and asked them to arrange for an immediate C-Section
Raj: Naina sign the papers.
Naina: Raj, why are you doing this?
Raj: ENOUGH. I HAVE ASKED THE DOCTOR TO PREPARE THE OT. YOU WILL SIGN THESE PAPERS AND GO IN FOR SURGERY.
Naina: NO RAJ... NO... PLEASE... JUST THREE MORE WEEKS
Raj: SIGN I SAID.
Raj put the pen in Naina's hand, held her wrist and put the papers before her. She threw the pen away. Raj wordlessly picked it up and thrust it back into her hands.
Raj: SIGN. NOW.
Naina was crying by now. Gayatri walked in,
Gayatri: Raj what are you doing?
Raj: Stay out of this. Naina if you have ever loved me, if you want me in your life, you will sign this.
Naina: Raj please don't say this. I love you more than anything else in my life. But I can't do what you are saying
Naina was shaking and practically begging him. Gayatri knew she had to intervene
Gayatri: Get out of this room Raj or I'll call security.Raj I mean it! I am the trustee of this hospital and it won't take me long to get you thrown out.
Raj walked out and Gayatri went to Naina. She hugged her and calmed her down.
OUTSIDE
Gayatri: What were you doing there? You think you can force her into going in for an early delivery like this?
Raj: You have no right to interfere in my matters.
Gayatri: I made the mistake of falling in line with your grandfather's zidd in the past. I won't repeat my mistake with you. So Rajveer whether you like it or not I will interfere especially whn you behave like that with your wife.
Raj: You think I wanted to behave like that? I have never ever behaved liked that in the 12 years I have known her out of which 2 years I have been married to her. But I have no choice. I have to get her to agree for surgery.
Gayatri: How do you think the surgery will go if she is operated against her will?
Raj: So what should I do? Do nothing?
Gayatri: Make the best of your situation? If Naina has decided to carry the baby to term, support her as best as you can.
Raj walked away. He went and washed his face. And realized that his grandmother was right. He went and spoke to the doctor.
Dr: And finally Raj, I am sure you'll take care of all of this but please call either your parents or hers?
Raj: Why? I have made a note of everything? Why do we need anyone else?
Dr: Raj, you are in the army. You are the base commander. No matter what you do, you cannot devote all your time to Naina. And even if you could you need support.
Raj walked out. He calle up Naina's father. The situation was difficult. Naina's mother had slipped and hurt her back and would be unable to travel for the next few weeks. He called up Shalini but she was unavailable on the phone as she was posted in a remote area in J&K. He was becoming desperate and tears of helplessness were flowing down his eyes. He felt a hand on his shoulder.
Gayatri: Raj come home with us! I promise you I'll help you take the best possible care of Naina.
Raj: I need family not charity. And you expect me to trust your words? Words of a woman who put me in orphanage when I wasn't even a month old?
Gayatri: Do you want to put your wife and baby's life at risk because you can't forgive me? Your anger is justified but right now our focus needs to be Naina.
Raj: What about your husband?
Gayatri: You leave that to me.
At the Shekhawat palace
Raghuvendra: That b**tard will not live in this palace. Never.
Gayatri: In that case I'll leave too. Do you know how critical his wife, Naina's condition is? Do you want her to end up like Priya?
Raghuvendra: NO..NEVER... IF THIS IS ABOUT NAINA, GET THEM HOME. Just ask him to stay out of my sight.
Gayatri: Raghuvendra he hates you as much if not more than you hate him, He for one has a valid reason.
One more thing if you call him b**tard once more, I will leave you. And I mean it.
Gayatri made all the preparations and Naina and Rajveer came to their palace the next day. Their room was a beautiful and elegant suite which even had a small study for Raj
Gayatri; Beta is the bed comfortable? Can I get you anything else?
Naina: Gayatri ji it's perfect
GayatrI: And I am sure you have tons of maternity wear. But i couldn't resist picking up some more. I hope you like it

Gayatri: ANd there's a nurse here to take care of any medical needs. And...
Naina: Gayatri ji. you have done more then necessary
Gayatri: Beta, rest now. Raj also hasn't slept in two days.
After Gayatri leaves
Naina: Raj you are very angry with me right?
Raj: I am. But my love always is more than any other emotion I feel for you.
Naina: You won't leave me..
Raj: Shh.. Go to sleep..
Naina: Raj there's one thing wrong with this bed.
Raj: Are you in pain? Should I call Gayatri ji?
Naina: No.. I need you. No pillow or bed can provide me the comfort I feel in your arms.
Raj came and lay beside her and she snuggled in his arms. She put his free hand on the bump.
Naina: A few more weeks Raj and your darling will be in your arms.
Raj smiled, He held Naina till she was sound asleep. He then went to Gayatri's study.
Gayatri: Naina's asleep?
Raj: Yes. I have come here to thank you? What you are doing is very very special for us. But I don't take favors from anyone. This is a blank cheque. Please fill in the total amount you spend on us and I'll make sure I pay you back every dime.
