Part 18
It wasn't always easy being a doctor. You had to treat patients who were in pain or even worse still dying. But it was moments like these that compensated for the tough times and made Shalini love her job.
Shalini looked at Naina who's face had been troubled a few moments ago. But on hearing the news she was glowing with joy. She turned to Rajveer who was crying. Yes the much decorated officer, Major Rajveer Singh Shekhawat, was crying tears of joy. She had rarely seen expectant fathers display so much emotion. She could only imagine how much this baby meant for Raj.
Raj turned to Naina, got up and hugged her tightly. Naina was also surprised by Raj's strong emotions. Raj sat down but continued having his hand around her.
Raj: Doc! We are pregnant? I mean... Naina is pregnant... I mean Naina and I are having a baby?
Shal: Indeed :) We'll do a more thorough check up next week. But as of now you guys need to go and celebrate. Yes Raj don't worry. Everything is ok. Naina and the baby are just fine.
Raj and Naina stepped out of the office. Raj was instinctively protective of Naina. He asked her to be careful on the stairs, helped her on to the jeep and drove even more carefully than useful.
Raj was in seventh heaven. This was his dream come true. After his conversation with Gunny he had already decided to give his relationship with Naina a fair chance and this news was like a booster shot for his efforts. Everyone loves their child. But this baby meant more to him. Growing up as an orphan, deprived of love and attention, he had craved for a family. Having Naina in his life filled the void of love but he still craved for a blood relation he could call his own. And now this baby, a creation of Naina and him, would be his flesh and blood.
Naina's emotions were more conflicted. She was thrilled by the news and very happy to be carrying the baby of the man she dearly loved. BUT, she struggled with everything Raj had said to her over the weeks. He said he felt suffocated around her. He compared her to Lala Gehlot. He insisted on divorce. Would he change his mind with this news? Aand if he did. did that really bode well for their relation? Naina had always known that Raj would be an incredibly loving father and this gave her a lot of joy. But she it upset her to think that the only reason Raj might want her in his life was because she was pregnant with his baby.
Naina had dozed off by the time they got to the academy. Raj lifted her gently and carried her to their room.
He sat next to and gently ran his hands in her hair. He bent down and kissed her on the forehead.
Raj (to a sleeping Naina): Thank you! You don't know how much you and the baby mean to me. I have been wanting to say this for the last few days. I forgive you Naina. And I am sorry for the pain I have caused you by channelising the anger I feel for my father and Lala Gehlot on you.
But all this is in the past. We have such a beautiful reason to celebrate. Our baby... I promise to be the best husband to you and the best father to her.
He changed and got into bed but was too excited to sleep and spent many hours researching resources for expectant parents.
Next morning he got up to the sound of Naina puking in the bathroom. He went in and soothed her, rubbing her back as she continued puking. He made her sit on the table and got lime water for her. She felt much better after drinking it.
They got ready for their classes.
Raj: Naina, we need to tell Brigadier Chandok soon. You can easily continue taking classes but you'll have to either modify or restrict your participation in drills.
Naina: You are right. But.. people usually advice against sharing this news till the third month. There is a fairly high risk of miscarriage before that.
Naina's face clouded as she said the last line.
Raj: I know Naina. But we'll take the best possible care of you and it's a unique circumstance isn't it.
Naina nodded.
Over the next few weeks Raj pampered Naina to the hilt. As her taste kept changing and desires fluctuating he cooking whatever she wanted for her. He made sure he took her out in the fresh air, going jogging with her in the morning and a gentle stroll in the evening. He was also doing his best to reduce any discomfort she felt. Naina enjoyed his care but couldn't move past the looming issue of divorce.
Naina: WHat have you decideD?
Raj: About what Naina?
Naina: Divorce?
Raj: I tore them the papers the moment we got back from the hospital that day. We'll be the most loving family together. You. Me. And our daughter... I mean our baby.
Naina (sarcastically): Oh interesting. So my presence suffocates you when I am your wife. But now that I am carrying your baby, everything is OK?
Raj: Naina you are misunderstanding me. I had already decided to give our relation a fresh...
Naina; Enough Raj. I am tired and want to sleep. I am sure you won't object given your baby benefits from it.
Time passed and Naina entered her second trimester. She was doing well on the health front and was obviously thrilled about her pregnancy. But Raj sensed that she still didn't understand his emotions. Didn't understand that his love for her wasn't limited to the fact that she was carrying their baby. He loved the baby more than his own life. But he loved Naina even more. She was his everything.
At the end of three months they shared the news with the faculty and staff at KMA. Everyone was thrilled.
Except one person. Abhimanyu Rai Chauhan. ABhimanyu was furious and angry and jealous.
Abhimanyu (to himself): How can she be carrying his baby? I am not going to let them be happy. I could try and create doubts in Raj's mind about the paternity of the baby...
Na... that's a stupid idea. The timeline doesn't add up and Raj loves and trusts Naina too much.
I think I need to go after Naina again. It's always easy to manipulate impulsive Naina. It's almost impossible to get Raj to doubt the baby's paternity. But much easier to convince Naina that he has such doubts.
Abhimanyu laughed his evil laugh.
