CHAPTER 3: Files
Walking into the house, Prem heard the loud chatter and laughter coming from dining area. He decided to head upstairs to freshen up before going to meet his Beeji.
Hot water sprayed the hard plains of Prem's body. You could often find Prem at his favorite gym in the early hours of the morning. The water hot water travelled down his back erasing the days tension.
He sighed deeply as he thought about his relationship with Sanjana. Yes, they were together for 4 years. Yes, they had their issues. Yes, he did care for her. But, over the years his feelings developed into one of strong friendship. Prem tried multiple times to discuss their relationship status to Sanjana, and as always, Sanjana always eluded the conversations. He would try again...perhaps next week.
He closed his eyes and ran his hands through his wet hair with the usual, unusual feeling in the pit of his stomach. Each time he closed his eyes, he always saw the same pair of eyes staring back at him- so kind, fierce, and full of light. He normally concentrated on work while he was at the office, but he would occasionally steal a glace or two at the vision in front of him. He was the boss after all, it was completely inappropriate to act on his odd feelings. He shook his head in attempt to clear his thoughts. He shut off the shower and changed into a pair of black slacks and a blue Nike t-shirt.
Downstairs, Prem noticed his family was still in the dining area, laughing even louder if that was possible. "Namaste Beeji," Prem greeted with a smile.
The old lady wore a huge grin on her face as she took in the sight of her eldest grandson. "Prem!! Beta, come here." She said hugging him. Beeji wore a beige colored salwar and shawl, with her greying hair in a tight bun at the base of her neck. "I missed you Prem babu," she said touching his cheek.
"You too Beeji. Aap sab ne dinner kar liya?" Prem asked getting his food out.
"Haan beta, aaj office mein kaam kaisa tha?" Lalit Juneja asked. The older man was always a cheerful fellow. His once prized hair was now balding, but that never dampened his spirits.
Prem nodded, "As usual Bauji. Where is Preet?"
"Preet left a while ago with his friend. He'll be back soon." Gayatri said. "And just so you know, all of the preparations for tomorrow have been done." Prem nodded again focussing on his dinner.
"Gayatri, is Heer coming tomorrow?" Lalit asked.
Gayatri stole a brief look at her son, whose head was down pretending not to notice the conversation, "Yes, Heer is coming. I told her today when she came to drop off those files for Prem." Then turning her attention to her son she continued, "You work that girl too hard Prem. Who bechari kitna thak gayi thi pata hai? I could see it on her face."
"Miss. Mann ne kuch kaha tha?" Prem asked.
"No, but I'm a mother. I can tell how much she has been working. Besides, she doesn't come to visit me anymore." She complained slightly.
Prem put his dishes away and stood by his mom smiling, "Maa, work is work. Kya karoon?"
Beeji sat studying the look on Prem and Gayatri's face at the mention of this Heer. She cleared her throat, making Prem look at her.
Prem noticed the slight mischievous glint in his Beeji's eyes, and knew something was cooking in that brain of hers.
"Prem babu, yeh Heer kaun hai?" Beeji asked smiling slyly.
"She works with me. Meri PA hai woh." Prem explained sitting down next to his loveable Beeji. "Don't start to get any crazy ideas in your head. She works with me. That's all."
"Personal assistant? Sirf assistant ki kaam karti hai...ya kuch personal bhi?" Beeji asked winking at Prem.
Mortified by the direction of the conversation Prem plugged his ears with his fingers, "Beeji, I'm going to try and forget that you even hinted at that...I'm going to my room now before I get scarred anymore."
Beeji laughed out loud. "Hmm, can't wait to meet this Heer tomorrow..."

The next morning Prem entered the office in a foul mood. He rejected 5 calls from Sanjana in the last hour alone. He had a very busy morning in the office and honestly couldn't deal with the drama Sanjana was going to put him through. As he sat in office he silenced his phone and noticed the warm cup of coffee on his desk. Just as he sipped the liquid energy there was a knock on his cabin door. "Come in," he called out.
A petite woman walked into the cabin with her head down. Her shoulder length brown hair was swept to one side of her neck and she wore a white dress shirt with black pants. She looked nervous as she twiddled her thumbs.
"Miss. Rampal...Is there something I can help you with?" Prem asked distractedly.
"Well actually, I came here to talk to you about those files you gave me to work on..." Veera Rampal started.
"Ah yes. I will be needing them on Monday. I thought we could go through some the details you worked on and then we could go from there."
"Uh..well. Umm..the files aren't exactly complete...yet," Veera confessed slowly.
"Miss. Rampal..." Prem took a deep breath trying to control his voice. "I gave you more than enough time to finish those files. Do you have any idea how important those files are? You showed me the most promise out of all of the potential interns, and frankly I was not expecting such work ethics from you. Laziness will not be tolerated in this office. I expect those files to be completed and on my desk on Monday morning. And if they are not...you may find a new office to complete your internship at. Am I making myself clear Miss. Rampal?" Prem scolded, bearing down on Veera.
Veera nodded barely holding in the tears and quickly left the room.
Outside Heer heard everything that happened, she tried to console Veera but she shook her off and ran to the bathroom.
Heer walked into Prem's cabin knowing she was entering the war zone. "Miss. Mann how many times do I have to tell you to bring me the China client files?" Prem shouted.
Heer simply walked to the right side of his desk and picked up the stack of blue binders. She placed them right in front of him.
"Well then. Good." Prem stated. He sighed again looking at his flashing phone which read Sanjana Calling'. He directed it to voicemail.
Heer glared at him then she figured out exactly what had her boss in a foul mood. "You know sir, you shouldn't get so angry...it's not good for your health."
"What?"
"I'm not justifying Veera's actions or time management, but don't you think you were a little too harsh?"
"Miss. Mann, what conversations I have with my interns should not concern you." Prem snapped.
"If you didn't shout so much, half the office wouldn't have heard the conversation." Heer replied calmly.
Prem only glared at her. Heer never once looked away.
"You're the boss. You are her role model. She's here to learn and gain experience from you. Sometimes mistakes happen. It seemed like you were taking out someone else's anger on her. I respect you, I just think you shouldn't let you anger towards anyone guide you actions and words." Heer continued.
"Miss. Mann if you're done with your lecture. You may leave." Prem said expressionless. He watched her walk away without another word. Halfway through their conversation he realized he was being irrational. But, he was too far deep to change and accept that he was indeed wrong. He would talk to Veera later.

"He can be such a jerk sometimes. It drives me crazy." Her mumbled to herself.
He is stressed though' her mind countered back.
"So? That doesn't mean he has the right to be so rude and inconsiderate." She said out loud.
Yes, but you know he didn't mean everything he said. He was frustrated.' She thought.
"Must be some serious issues with Sanjana. I'm going to talk to him again. Convince him to talk to Veera and make amends." Heer reasoned.

It was 2pm when Heer knocked and entered Prem's cabin. Prem seemed calmer and slightly happier. She set the Starbucks cup down in front of him and gave him a small smile.
"What's this?" he asked
"Chai. Tea makes all the tension go away. It's been a... rough day." Heer commented.
"That it has been," Prem sipped the chai and let the warm feeling envelope his body. The heady flavours of cardamom, clove, cinnamon, and nutmeg made him sigh contently. "Thank you. I needed that."
Heer waved her hand, "don't mention it. I know chai makes me feel better no matter what problems there are."
"The chai is great...but I was talking about earlier. With Veera, I mean. I was too hard on her, and I'm glad you were here to keep me in check." Prem started. "I've already talked to her, and I apologized for my words this morning. You were right."
"We're a team aren't we?" Heer mentioned with a smile.
Prem smiled back. "Yeah we are."
"So, now that things are back to...somewhat normal around here, you have a web conference that begins in approximately 15 minutes." Heer notified.

After another hard day at the office, Heer went home to change. After showering she stood in front of her closet wondering what she should wear.

"Prem, can you please get that thal from the puja stand? I need to set the diya." Gayatri called from the kitchen.
"Ji mom." Prem responded walking to the living area. Picking up the thal he turned to see Heer walking in door. Prem was rooted at his spot. All thoughts flew out the window.
Heer wore a beautiful navy blue anarkali suit. It had see-through long sleeves and a matching dupatta that was placed around the front of her neck. The suit length was to her ankles. She wore a pair of silver payals and silver hoops in her ears. And she was no longer wearing her glasses. Her eyes were painted with black kajal, and her lips were tinted a light pink. She took Prem's breath away. He knew she was a pretty girl, but he never quite realized it.
Prem walked to her, "Hi."
"Oh! Hi," she looked at his hands, which were holding the thal. "Were you planning on taking my arti? I didn't know that is how you greet your guests," she joked.
Prem flushed slightly, "Oh this, maa was asking for it. I was just bringing it to her."
"Oh, where is aunty?" Heer said looking around.
"In the kitchen."
"Let me take this to her," she said taking the thal. She turned to walk when Prem's voice stopped her.
"Uh Miss. Mann?" he called out, "what happened to the India files I gave you last week?" Prem cursed himself for bring up work. He wanted to compliment her, but work came out of his mouth instead.
Heer thought Prem might compliment her, she assumed she looked pretty ok. Her face fell when she heard his words, "they're on my desk."
"I see, remember to bring them to my desk on Monday. We'll go over the terms together." Prem continued.
Heer nodded then started to walk again.
"Oh and Miss. Mann?" Prem called out again.
Heer turned to face him.
"You look...nice," he complimented and quickly walked away in the other direction.
Heer felt her cheeks get warm, she shook off the feeling and went to look for Gayatri with a smile playing at her lips.
