1 YEAR LATER:
The hall was filled with much laughter and joy. Little children running wild, chasing after one another, the women gossiping about other peoples children. The men having a friendly debate about how much George Bush messed up his time in office. The decorations were falling from the sides and the balloons were popping all over the place. The confetti on the floor colorized the room quite a bit and the clown bored out of his wits painted the faces of the teenagers with the initials of their lovers names. A very typical birthday party. Out far behind sat a 12 year old boy who was listening to his I pod and eating a enormous piece of chocolate cake. This is his story…this is Sahil Khanna's story.
Hi. I'm Sahil Khanna, a typical 12 year old know it all who only came to this party for two reasons. 1. The cake. 2. My mother threatened to unplug my computer. Man, was I bored. All the kids here were either fakers, teenagers, or toddlers. I was in the ripe age of neither being a toddler nor a teenager, and thank god I wasn't a faker. I don't know why parents do it, they always tell you to make nice with the other kids but for gods sakes they are all in love with Akon. Don't get me wrong, he's okay but how does a guy go from
Locked Up to singing sad love songs like
Don't Matter? It's pathetic. But the truth is I really don't enjoy hip hop and rap. I used too, but that was before Angad came back. He introduced me to rock, and not the wanna-be rockers, he introduced me to real 3 Days Grace kind of rock. Well you mite be wanting to know who who's party this actually is. It's my uncle Rehan's daughter Saffa's 7th birthday party. See my uncle had lost custody of his daughter after she was born to his in-laws. But around a year ago, his father in law died and before dying gave Saffa to Rehan. And so now here we all were…celebrating Saffa's seventh birthday. Saffa and my brother Salil are the same age…I think one day they'll get married.
Well I guess you all want to know about my equation with Angad now right? Well, the funny thing is that he's my dad, well not my biological dad…he's my adopted father. See my biological father died, and my mom brought my dad in to help her keep me from going to my psycho grandfather. Well, then Angad and my mom Kripa fell in love and created my brother Salil. He's one of the stupid kids running around with the exploding balloons. So anyway, before my mom found out she was pregnant Angad left, because that was part of the deal. And like typical grown ups, they didn't tell each other how much they loved one another and that created a whole lot of misunderstanding. So then about 5 years past and there was no sign of Angad, then one fine day he showed up again and next thing I know he's my adopted dad. My mom wanted to tell me the whole truth once I turned 13, but Angad told me earlier. Now, why do I call Angad by his name and not dad? Well…it's because I'm still not comfortable with it. Don't get me wrong, I love him, but I sometimes get scared that he'll leave again…so we both decided to take it slow and be friends for a while. I'm just following the plan, but to tell you the truth I secretly call him dad all the time. Oh, see ya later guys, I have to go help my brother, he got his head stuck under the chair…again! Until then you check up with what my parents are doing.
Up front Kripa was sitting with all the other women chatting about school, men, kids, and Indian serials. Kripa…now finally she was able to live a normal life like everyone else, now finally she was able to introduce to the world who her husband and the father of her children was, she finally felt complete. The years were unable to take their toll on Kripa. She was in her early thirties but still looked like fresh bait of the elderly women to hook up with their grandsons. She was wearing a beautiful light blue sari with hand stitch designs in white. Her hair that was previously a dark henna color, was now dyed brown and it beautifully complemented her full green eyes. Her hair was cut a bit shorter and she had bangs that fell upon the side of her left eye, it gave her face a pretty round shape. "So, Kripa how's your husband when it comes to helping around the house?", asked one of the ladies. Kripa smiled, "The question isn't if he helps me or not, the question is whether I help him", she answered confidently. The women laughed and another young girl asked, "Bhabbi what's your secret?" Kripa moved closer into the group so that no one else could hear them, "My secret is that I have a very uncomfortable couch in my bedroom", Kripa said winking at the girl. All the women giggled and looked at the men who had no idea to what the women were saying.
The men were all the way on the other side of the hall talking about politics, politics and some more politics. They would occasionally jump to Priyanka Chopra's hot legs, but then would remember that their all married. Angad was also sitting there and begging God to just kill him now. He sat there wearing his black fake Armani suit with a sliver shirt and a sliver tie. Kripa had made his tie too tight and it was choking him, and the AC in the hall was in a total low. Every time someone would ask him something, he would answer politely and then glare at him with his blue eye's whenever they turned around. He hated these parties, and he hated these people even more. They just were so boring! The truth was he had been begging Kripa every night since they found out about this party to not go,, and every night Kripa would threaten him to go sleep on the very uncomfortable couch she bought for their bedroom. His only ray of survival was Rehan who wasn't half bad to talk too. "So, I can see your bored", Rehan said handing him a glass of champagne. "Yeah well, I'm not an easy person to please when it comes to parties. It requires about 50 belly dancers, maybe a stripper, and a lot more alcohol", Angad said taking a sip of his drink. "Well, A. This is a 7 year olds birthday party. B. Your married", reminded Rehan. "Yeah I know…that's why I'm here in the first place…no offense", Angad replied. Rehan laughed lightly, "None taken. So why did you come?", he asked. Angad looked around until he found his wife. He then pointed at her, "See my wife looks extremely hot tonight, and I really wouldn't want to have to sleep on the couch", he said with a straight face. Rehan on the other hand was dying of laughter, "Well too bad buddy. Anyway, it's almost time for the cake so then you can leave", Rehan assured Angad as he walked away.
Well guys I'm back. The party is over and we're all going home. Angad just bought a new MDX, and he was literally obsessed with it. It was like his life. We weren't allowed to eat in it, we aren't allowed to sleep in it, and we weren't even allowed to put our feet up unless we had clean socks on. He was obsessed. "So did you like the party?", I asked Angad as he drove. "Like hell…", Angad words were left incomplete because he noticed the stare my mom gave him. "It was very nice and fun. We should do this more often, what do you say honey?", Angad said very mechanically as if he had rehearsed saying it many times before. My brother and I started laughing, Salil didn't really know why he was laughing, he jus did it because he likes to copy me. "Well, I thought it was very nice of Rehan to invite all of us. And I think we was good for us too, we're such a secluded family…we should be more social", mom said. "Salil baby, how did you like it?", she asked. My brother looked blank for a minute then said, "It was fun…I liked playing with the clowns big nose", Salil replied. "Salil, you liked the clown?", asked Angad. "Yes daddy, I loved the clown!", Salil yelled out as if Angad was 50 miles away from him. Angad laughed, " Oh he got that from you, I hated clowns when I was little", Angad to Kripa. The conversation went like this until we reached home.
At home I went straight to my room, and Salil went with mom to his. Angad went straight to Betty in the kitchen for some
real food. Well, I really don't know what happens next for I'll leave you guys with the crazy writer lady for now.
After Kripa put Salil to sleep she went to Sahil's room to check up on him. She did this every night. She would stare into the room, watching her son sleep and pray that everything would be okay. It was a maternal action that no one, not even Angad would ever understand. When ever he watched the kids sleep, the only thing he would be thinking of was going to sleep himself. As Kripa watched Sahil sleep, she left a tug on her waist. She at first ignored it, and then turned around to see Angad. "What?", she whispered. Angad looked to see if Sahil was asleep and then asked, "Did Salil go to sleep?". "Yes", replied Kripa as they both walked across the hall to their bedroom. "So, did Salil have a good time? I saw him laughing and playing a lot today?", Angad asked while helping Kripa remove her jewelry. "Yeah, Salil is very good at making friends, it's Sahil who I'm worried about. Did you see in the party, he was so secluded", Kripa said while combing her hair. "Don't worry about Sahil Kripa. He's like me, and I turned out fine", Angad assured her. Kripa rolled her eyes. "I saw that! What was that about Ms. Khanna?", Angad asked drawing closer to Kripa. "Nothing, its just…well you didn't really turn out fine Angad", Kripa laughed. "Oh, what's that supposed to mean?", he asked. Kripa got up and encircled her arms around Angad's neck. "Angad, all I'm saying is that I would want Sahil to be more like me, a bit more…likable", Kripa replied innocently. "So your trying to say I'm not likable", Angad asked holding Kripa closer to him. "Well…yes", Kripa said. Angad made his way to slightly tickling Kripa's cheeks with his nose. "So, you didn't like me when you first met me?", Angad asked. "Not really Angad", she replied. Angad began to slowly kiss Kripa. "So you didn't find my sexy voice irresistible, or my strong grip soothing, or my expressive eye's intoxicating?", he asked still kissing her gently. "My God Angad. Aren't you just one conceited man. And for the record, no I didn't", Kripa said brushing her hair away from her face. Angad was lightly caressing Kripa's hair as he spoke, "We'll see about that". Angad and Kripa gracefully bounced unto the bed as Angad kissed Kripa.
8 MONTHS LATER:
I'm back guys. So, last time I talked to you all was about 6 months ago. Well a lot changed from then, for one my mom is pregnant. For the past 6 months life in his house was…hell. Well not really, it was just really bad, not for us just for Angad. Mom has been having crazy mood swings and Angad always has to put up with it. Take right now for example, mom wanted ice cream, so Angad had to go to the Deli at 3 am to buy her some. When he came home, Angad joked and said that he would make sure they never get pregnant again, and next thing we know… "Baby, I'm sorry", begged Angad sitting on the floor next to his bedroom door. There was no response from the other end of the door and Angad kept apologizing to his door. It's been like that for the past two hours. Angad begs and mom ignores. It's actually very funny. You want to know what even funnier was that my brother Salil was going crazy. Some jerk at his day care told him that a new baby meant no one would care for him anymore and he took it so seriously. He made Angad sign a contract saying he'll always love Salil more than the new baby. Well guys, Angad told my brother and I to go to sleep so I'll catch you all later. You guys can stick around and see how this feud between Angad and my crazy pregnant mother ends.
After hours of waiting, Kripa finally opened the door for Angad to come in. Angad cautiously took very slow steps and had a very clam loving face on. It wasn't because Angad really was calm, the truth was that he was freaking out but last time Kripa kick Angad out of the room because he
looked unhappy with this pregnancy. Kripa was a very emotional woman Angad realized. "Hey baby, you okay?", Angad asked slowly sitting next to her. Kripa put her arm around Angad's and blew her nose on a tissue. "I'm sorry", she said softly. "No, honey I'm sorry", Angad said kissing Kripa's forehead. "No, I know I'm a bit too much to handle right now. I understand if you don't want anymore children", Kripa said. The first thing that went through Angad's mind was
damn woman, we already have three! How many more do you want?. But of course he didn't say that. "Kripa, I want to make babies with you everyday", Angad said. There was a second of silence, then suddenly out of the blue Kripa began to sob uncontrollably. "No, no Kripa", Angad pleaded. Did he say something wrong? Why was she crying? "Baby, Kripa I love you", Angad said holding Kripa's crying face. Kripa said something but Angad could not understand because of all the sobbing she was doing. "What?", he asked. "I LOVE YOU TOO!", she cried out. It was strange, Kripa was crying, smiling, laughing all that the same time. It made Angad laugh. He hugged Kripa, lightly making sure he didn't put pressure on her stomach.
2 MONTHS LATER:
"Salil you idiot, give it to me", I yelled. My stupid brother stole my baseball cards and now were running around the house with them. It took me years to collect them, if he loses any of those Angad and mom are going only have 2 two because I'm going to kill Salil!. "No, I want to play", yelled out Salil. "Stupid you don't play with those", I screamed back. What did he think they were Pokemon cards? Salil and I were running through the house when we ran into my parents rooms. "Mommy, he wont let me play!", complained Salil. "Mom tell your kid to…", I was interrupted by Angad telling us to be quiet. "Boys, quiet down, your going to wake your sister", he said softly. My mom was putting my baby sister Sohana to sleep. My sister was one month old, and already ruled the entire house. Everyone did anything she wanted, which was very impressive since she was just a one month old baby. But I loved her…I wish we could just give away Salil and keep Sohana. Well, not really I love Salil too but…he's just so annoying! Well I have to go now my brother ran to the other room with my cards, so I have to go kill him…again!
Angad and Kripa watched their little girl fall asleep. She was beautiful. She had large blue eye's that were a carbon copy of her father's. They rest of her face was all Kripa. Angad adored Sohana, she was his little angel. He would stare at her for hours just watching her every move. "So what are you thinking?", Kripa asked. Angad smiled and kissed Kripa's hands. " I'll see her walk, I'll see her talk and grow up", Angad said. " Yes, you will", Kripa agreed. In a way Kripa wasn't only agreeing with Angad, she was also reassuring herself that Angad would be here now…forever. "I was never there for Salil, and I'm so sorry for that Kripa. This feeling of seeing your child be born is so purifying. Thank you Kripa", Angad said with light tears in his eye's. "It wasn't your fault Angad, it was fate. And lets forget the past Angad, lets just remember today", Kripa said wiping Angad's tears away. "I love this little girl", Angad said slowly holding Sohana's hand. "I know you do, and I love you", said Kripa putting her hear on Angad's shoulders. Angad and Kripa sat watching their daughter dream.
2 YEARS LATER
"Dad", I yelled out. Angad turned around and caught the ball and made a three pointer. We were at a park having a little picnic. It was My mom, my dad, Salil, Sohana, Rahan uncle and Saffa. We're a pretty big family. My dad and I were playing basketball with Rehan, and my mom was playing with Salil, Saffa and Sohana. So, you mite all be wondering why I'm calling Angad dad now? Well, it's been two years since Sohana was born and I've seen dad and Sohana. Dad isn't a half bad father, and he really loves us all. I guess, I trust him now…I trust that he wont leave. So, now he's my dad and I love it!
Angad ran to the picnic spot and laid down putting his head on Kripa's lap. "Having fun?", Kripa asked handing Angad a bottle of water. "Yeah, I am. What about you?", Angad asked. " I'm having a blast", Kripa said playing with Angad's hair. "I think this was a perfect way of spending our anniversary", Angad said. "Although I really was looking forward to you and I on a deserted island ", he quickly added. Kripa laughed and lightly tapped Angad's shoulder. "Well, maybe we'll do that next year", she said. Angad and Kripa stayed quiet, just staring into each others eye's for a while. It was such a beautiful day, with the green grass, the smell of spring and a soft wind blowing. "So, any regrets?", Kripa asked Angad. " To be here with you, I'd never regret anything", Angad answered. Kripa blushed lightly when Sohana came running into her daddy's arms. "They took it", she said immediately playing with Angad's chain. "They took what?", Angad asked fixing his daughter's black silky hair. "My Barbie, they took it", Sohana complained. Kripa laughed and called Salil over, he jumped in the middle of Angad and Kripa. "Dad when are we gong to eat?", he asked. "Soon honey", Kripa replied as she tried to fix Salil's shirt. Sahil came and sat with them too and opened a can of soda. "So, what's up with the family meeting?", he asked. "Sahil did you take your sister's Barbie?", Angad asked. "No! Dad it was Salil who took it, I saw him", Sahil said laughing. "Sahil…", Kripa said in a monotone voice. Sahil rolled his eye's and took out the Barbie and handed it to Sohana. "Thank you", Sohana said still playing with Angad. "You welcome kid", Sahil said. They were all laughing and talking when Rehan came and took of picture of them. They say that there was so much joy and happiness in that picture, that you could even hear the laughs years after it was taken.
So this was my life, and this is my life. A little crazy, a little funny, a little sad, and little happy, and sometimes dramatic. But don't think it ends here. Trust me it never ends. I go into to high school tomorrow, and trust me, I'm going to score a world record with the number of girl friends I'm going to have. The problems have only begun in my house. Well excuse me for now. I have to go save my sister. My brother is trying to set her hair on fire…again!
"Some pursue happiness, and others create it…"
