Chapter 235- The Rebuke, My Devar
It was Sangeet ceremony of Raji's wedding. Maheswari was thankful that Shobha had not come to her with irritating words. Latika Bhabi was handling her quite well. She could see Sourabh continue to irritate Sreedhar and Sreedhar was struggling hard not to lose his patience. For once Maheswari understood what her son would be feeling. If his relation with Suman was acknowledged she knew by this time he would have shown Sourabh his place. But now he was unable to defend openly for her, because her character and also the family prestige was at stake.
As she watched him dance to the tune of latest Bollywood numbers along with others she mused.
" I never knew beta you could carry so much pain inside you and smile. Smile as if you are the happiest person on this earth. I had seen Suman's tears when she ran up seeing you, but wouldn't you have broken my son. Wouldn't you have wanted your mother at that time , near you to understand you. I couldn't even know you were crying. It was a different thing I couldn't understand Tilak or Sudhir, but you Sreedhar, I had thought if you breathe I will know. Still it took me more than a year to understand what has happened to you. Isnt it an irony to know my son's pain I had to understand the tears and anger of my bahu"
It was then Shobha came and sat near her . " Didi have you thought about any eligible girl for Sreedhar"
" Shobha let me come out of the trauma what has happened Murali before I think of tying sehera for Sreedhar" told Maheswari.
" Didi it is because of what happened to Murali I am telling Sreedhar is married quickly. Your so called bahu has cast her evil eyes on him too. I can feel it " told Sobha.
" Shobha Suman doesn't have any evil eyes. She didn't come to Murali's life. We chose her as Murali's life partner. Don't forget you are talking about the girl who has saved my son from the Chandelier, who has fought gundas to protect Aakash and very recently protected family's prestige when dirt was thrown on Sudhir " told Maheswari.
" She is pretending well. Didi her only goal is Sreedhar and he is immature, it is we elders who have to take steps so that children doesn't do mistake"
" Very much Shobha. You told it right. We elders have to take step so that children don't stray. I would suggest before looking at whether Suman has evil eyes or not, fix the roving eyes of your son Sourabh "
" Didi you are accusing my son unnecessarily" told Shobha. Now Latika Bhabi and some other ladies had also come. Latika Bhabi put a hand on Maheswari's shoulder.
" No Bhabi. I was trying my best not to spoil the wedding atmosphere. But my sister is not helping the cause. She sees the evil eyes of Suman latching on Sreedhar. But cant see the roving eyes of Sourabh who has insulted Suman by inappropriately touching her."
" Didi that girl had the audacity to tell you that. She had ..."
" Suman has not told me anything and she is not the type of girl who tells such things. But the way your son is behaving with Sreedhar and the way Bhaiyya is behaving with him I felt something was wrong. I got the information from Sreedhar. Shobha I am warning. If I see Sourabh near Suman one more time I wont hesitate to put him behind bars. So you better correct your son" told Maheswari, got up and sat near another relative leaving a Shobha gaping and almost in tears.
" Bhabi do you really think Maa will agree for our union" asked Suman. They were in kitchen and were preparing dinner. Vindhya had told Suman about Sudhir's plan to tell about her and Sree to Maheswari post their Singapore trip.
" Suman maybe it will take her some time. But I know Maa. If she knows that is what Sree wants, he has waited so patiently, you have supported him in this journey she will approve. She loves you as a bahu Suman. Papa it will be bit more time, but once Maa is convinced she will convince Papa. He also likes you Suman. Just that his traditional thoughts will take some time to adapt to change, just like that of Poornima."
Suman smiled " Bhabi shall I ask you one thing"
" Now what is the question. Sreedhar tells your hobby itself is asking questions" told Vindhya.
Suman giggled. She had seen Sreedhar sharing a very good rapport with Vindhya. " Bhabi how could you feel I was suited more for Sreedhar when you saw my photo. You doesn't know, Sreedhar has not told you about us, then just with a photo"
Vindhya looked at her. She had told her sometime back in one of their casual conversations that she had felt Suman was more suited for Sreedhar.
" Suman do you know one thing. I was just thirteen when my engagement happened with Sudhir. On my engagement day I didn't see Sudhir. In those days in my home a girl could see her husband only post marriage. Those were the days of face covering seheras and face covering ghunghats for wedding and all. Sudhir's dadi was against such practice in marriage, but for engagement the rituals were maintained. Sreedhar was seven years old and he had tagged along with Maa and Dadi to my room. Dadi told from now on she is your bhabi.
I still remember him calling me bhabi for first time and sitting beside me. That was the first relation I formed in this house. Bhabi before bahu. Once they went my dadi told me Bhabi is only second to Maa and asked me to always treat my devar as my first child itself. I didn't understand it that point. But then I had a special bond with him. Myself and Sudhir were married five years post our engagement as you know Maa wanted me to complete Plus two and attain eighteen. In those five years for every Diwali and Holi someone from here will come with sweets and dresses for me. He will also come. Sometime Murali was there, sometimes he alone. I played with him, I used to take him in and around our place. I used to feed him too.
Then when I came here post marriage your Jethji was always busy with work. Maa will ask him to accompany me so that I can visit places in Jaipur. Over years I never knew when he became my son than my devar. Even I didn't realize it. But when I knew he loves you, I knew it was because I knew him like a mother I could guess you were more suited for him.
I guess Maa also knew. Maa also felt something. She was never sure of your wedding to Murali, but just went along
Now what happened we cannot change Suman. But then whatever we do now can usher in better things. "
" Bhabi Sreedhar had always talked about his family in college. You don't know how much he had trusted his family. I could never connect to that, because in my family there was no love, no trust, I didn't even know what it meant in true sense. But living here each day I realize he was correct. He can never hurt anyone of you and he never will " told Suman and they heard Sudhir's foot steps and Vindhya went to receive him.
